Working paper. Hungarian micro-entry for Index 2 Attitude fault-ascribe, beside live attributeATT · tulajdonít and live creditMERIT · elismer. Geometry from Lexical_Entry_Blame_Argument_Structure; NegQ maps from Negative_Questions_Blame (chats 13 / 22). Focus uniqueness is the Group C shell plate already used on those two pages (Attribute_GroupC_Larson_Shells, chat 04): one preverbal host, Focus+nem. The live pages already print the blame contrast strings (A bizottság a vállalkozót hibáztatta a késésért; A késésért a vállalkozót okolják) and already reject blame’s for-cloth and onto-cloth on tulajdonít. Constructed diagnostics diagnose ACC = Target, -ért Charge, definite vs indefinite conjugation, the missing prefix, light-noun hiba / hibáztatás / okolás, and the missing DOC / MeasureP / with-frame / GEN-neg. They are working-paper hypotheses, not spontaneous-speech citations and not fake elicitation. English, Spanish, French, Italian, Japanese, Mandarin, Polish, and Bulgarian blame twins already live. Navajo stays deferred.
Constructed examples. Frames below are packaging hypotheses aligned with the lexical entry, the Blame NegQ paper, and the strings already used as contrast on attribute-att-hu.html and credit-merit-hu.html. Cause-true and settlement are not entailed — same missing defaults as English blame and Hungarian ATT / MERIT. Do not fake elicitation. A definite object (a vállalkozót) takes definite conjugation (hibáztatta, okolják). An indefinite object WH (kit) takes indefinite conjugation (hibáztattak, okolnak). That alternation is object definiteness, not a second argument. Past hibáztatta is tense of the Index 2 lemma, not a Slavic-style perfective twin. FIN / XFER strings (jóváír) appear only as contrast pointers. MERIT (elismer) and ATT (tulajdonít) are live — contrast, not this page’s cloth.
Sense-class · blame / ATT / MERIT / FIN split (Index 2 line). Index 2 lists Hungarian Attitude as hibáztat, okol, tulajdonít, elismer, jóváír (Vols. 3, 6). This page deepens the ascribe-fault reading of hibáztat / okol as √ASCRIBE_FAULT. Bare tulajdonít is content-ascribe at attribute-att-hu.html (ACC = Charge, DAT = Target). elismer is recognition polarity at credit-merit-hu.html. Ledger / book-HAVE readings sit at the FIN pointer jóváír only — do not deepen FIN here. Do not invent credit-merit-bg.html or credit-merit-pl.html. Keep the roots / polarities apart.
Scout / deferred. Light-noun hiba / hibáztatás / okolás is scout-leaning. The ATT-parallel hypothesis is Poss-AGR = Judge, with ACC Target still outside the noun — the same cut chat 15 states for tulajdonítás. A competing parse makes the possessor the Target. Flag both; do not rank. Onto-geometry on a fault noun is scout, not a verbal frame of hibáztat, and not elicited. Reflexive hibáztatja magát corefers Judge and Target; it is not a passive. Navajo HANDLE packaging is deferred. No fake elicitation.

Hierarchy

Same inventory as English blame, Spanish culpar, French blâmer, Italian incolpare, Japanese 責める, Mandarin 怪 / 责备, Polish obwiniać / winić, and Bulgarian обвинявам / виня. Not five-place. Not four sisters of one V. Surface count can name the board, the weather, the delay, and an outer cause — but the lexicon does not list four co-arguments of √ASCRIBE_FAULT.

Intended labeling (shared with English · Hungarian cloth)

√ASCRIBE_FAULT + VoiceJ(Judge) + Target + Charge  ·  hierarchy Judge > Target > Charge (1+2)

Voice introduces Judge (proto-Agent of the attitude). The ascription relates Target to Charge. Hungarian spells the productive cloth as ACC Target plus Charge in -ért — valakit hibáztatni valamiért, valakit okolni valamiért. The object a vállalkozót is accusative, not dative. Charge wears a késésért. -ért does not alternate for vowel harmony. Light-noun hiba / hibáztatás / okolás is scout packaging of the same ascription, not a second root. Optional high Affectee / outer CAUSE wrap Voice; they are not listed inner arguments. There is no verbal prefix on either lemma, so Focus does not separate a particle.

No MeasureP. There is no verbal Amount+Denomination object. Degrees that sneak in (a késés mekkora részéért, a partitive inside the -ért phrase, or a partitive on hiba) live on the Abney spine of that noun — Left Branch Condition for sell / payGIVE / chargeFEE / creditFIN does not apply as a verbal diagnostic here. Group C Polish GEN-neg rewrites MeasureP of FIN/deduct. Hungarian has no genitive of negation: nem does not rewrite ACC Target into a genitive, and it does not move Charge into the accusative slot. The working-paper NegQ keeps accusative on Target under Focus, parallel to ATT Charge staying accusative under Focus+nem on attribute-att-hu.html. That is packaging. It is not an elicited denial of a genitive Hungarian does not use this way.

What Group C changes for Hungarian blame is ACC Target against DAT Target on the ATT and MERIT twins, the -ért Charge cloth, and unique preverbal Focus + nem with no prefix to strand. What it does not change is the inventory. Weather still satisfies Target and fails Judge. Cause-true is still not entailed. Target and Charge still do not invert at Transfer cost. Treating blame as Agent > Theme > Goal, collapsing it with tulajdonít because both sit on the Index 2 line, importing elismer’s recognition packaging, or collapsing it with FIN because dative can also mark an account under jóváír, predicts a DOC, a HAVE entailment, a MeasureP LBC host, a productive with-frame, or a grammatical weather-as-Judge — none of those exist on blame.

Hungarian frames · Case clothes

Group C packages ascribe-fault without a productive DOC. Productive cloth: Target = ACC, Charge in -ért. The constituent immediately before the verb is the single Focus host. Material further left can be a topic; it is not a second Focus. Cheap NegQ association tracks that host: Target-Focus when the accusative is preverbal, Charge-Focus when the -ért phrase is preverbal. ATT keeps accusative on Charge and dative on Target. MERIT uses the same DAT+ACC letters with recognition polarity. These blame lemmas do not separate a prefix.

# Nem a rossz időjárást hibáztatták a késésért? — meaning the weather didn’t cause it. cause-true not a default

A bare Nem immediately before the verb challenges the ascription event. Challenging the contractor wants the accusative already in Focus. Challenging the delay wants the -ért phrase already in Focus. Focus uniqueness: one preverbal host — A VÁLLALKOZÓT or A KÉSÉSÉRT, not both (chat 04, the same cut as live ATT and MERIT). A késésért a vállalkozót okolják is not that violation: the -ért phrase is to the left of the preverbal accusative, so the accusative is the Focus host and the Charge phrase is a topic. Negation does not grow a double-object, does not turn Target into the dative of tulajdonít, does not create a with-frame, and does not produce a genitive — there is no GEN-neg host. HOLD is not cause-true. The Polish note “GEN-neg off on Charge unless Charge is a QP” names a host Hungarian blame does not have. A measuring QP is a FIN object, not this verb’s Charge. The unambiguous accusative in the diagnostic is a vállalkozót / a rossz időjárást, resumed by őt.

WH / NegQ diagnostics · Focus+nem · no MeasureP LBC

Unlike sell / payGIVE / chargeFEE / bet / creditFIN, blame has no verbal MeasureP. There is therefore no Left-Branch Condition of the Amount-from-Denomination type on √ASCRIBE_FAULT. Degrees that appear are DP-internal on the -ért Charge or on the light noun hiba. nem does not rewrite the Target/Charge association. WH is Focus, so it occupies the single preverbal slot. hibáztat and okol have no prefix to leave the verb — unlike elismer, where el- separates, and unlike the FIN pointer, where jóvá- separates. Kit is indefinite, so the verb is indefinite; a definite object DP keeps definite conjugation.

  1. ✓ Ki hibáztatta a vállalkozót a késésért? WH = Judge · definite object · definite verb
  2. ✓ Kit hibáztattak a késésért? WH = Target · ACC kit · indefinite conjugation · not kinek

  16. ✓ A rossz időjárást hibáztatták a késésért. weather = Target · fine
  17. * A rossz időjárás kit hibáztatott a késésért? weather still not Judge · indefinite verb would not rescue it

The shared hierarchy ranks Judge > ACC Target > -ért Charge > outer. Hungarian does not add a second subject in Spec,T for Focus. There is no ranking of Target against a silent Purpose, Price, or Theme₂. Cheap NegQ association tracks the focused constituent. Productive Target WH is kit — not kinek, which is the dative slot of tulajdonít and of elismer. Productive Charge WH is miért, not bare mit and not kinek.

ACC Target ≠ ATT Charge · -ért Charge ≠ FIN MeasureP · ≠ merit root · no GEN on Target

Blame’s accusative is the ascribee under HOLD — not sell Theme, not ATT Charge, not FIN Amount. Charge in -ért is the content of the fault — not ledger Amount, not sell Price, not pay Consideration. ATT’s accusative is Charge and ATT’s Target is DAT (a késést a vállalkozónak tulajdonította). MERIT’s productive accusative is also Charge (a korai befejezést a vállalkozónak elismerni). Index 2 prints elismer as the merit root and it is already live; do not reuse it as blame. Group C: Polish GEN-neg rewrites MeasureP of FIN/deduct; Hungarian blame keeps the Target/Charge association, keeps accusative on Target under nem, and does not put the Charge in the accusative slot. Same dative letters can show up next to a ledger account under jóváír — different root, different object.

Geometry · blame ≠ tulajdonít ≠ creditMERIT ≠ jóváír ≠ sell

In A bizottság a vállalkozót hibáztatta a késésért, the board holds that the contractor is responsible for the delay. That is ascription of fault, not HAVE of goods and not ledger INCREMENT. The contractor is Target. The delay is Charge. HOLD is an attitude; cause-true is not a presupposed fact.

English twin spells for-frame object Target / for-Charge, and on-frame object Charge / on-Target. Spanish twin: a-Target / de-Charge. French twin: object Target / pour-Charge. Italian twin: object Target / di-Charge. Japanese twin: object Target under 責める. Mandarin twin: Target post-V or 把-fronted; Charge via 因为. Polish twin: morphological ACC Target; Charge za / o; GEN-neg does not rewrite the association. Bulgarian twin: direct-object Target; Charge за / в / bare че; no GEN-neg. Hungarian twin: ACC Target; Charge -ért; one Focus host; Focus+nem; no prefix; no DOC and no GEN-neg. Weather OK as Target, not as Judge. Document-metonymy Judge OK.

Shells, ApplP, and Case

Merge Merge

Judge, Target, and Charge are selected. ACC Target and -ért Charge merge under √ASCRIBE_FAULT. Light-noun hiba / hibáztatás / okolás is a noun spine, not a fourth argument. No DOC, no ApplHAVE, no MeasureP in the numeration.

Agree Agree

T agrees with the Judge (NOM, φ; definite conjugation when Target is definite). v agrees with ACC Target. -ért is K on Charge, not a second Agree for a Goal. Poss-AGR on the event noun, if the ATT parallel holds, is Judge, not Target — scout.

Move Move

One Focus host moves preverbally. Focus+nem and WH occupy that slot. Judge does not share it with Target or Charge. There is no second Spec,T. These lemmas have no prefix to strand.

Filter Filter

Voice: weather is not a Judge. The filter survives Neg and the causative wrap. Gold No verbal MeasureP and no GEN-neg rewrite. DOC, with-frame, and ATT’s dative Target are out. FIN jóváír is a different root.

3pl (named Judge suppressed · not passive promotion):
    ACC Target
    K_-ért Charge

Hungarian blame never assigns four structural Cases. Target is accusative. Charge wears -ért. No low ApplHAVE. No low ApplSWAP. No ApplTASK. No MeasureP. High Appl / Affectee is extra when present and is not a listed argument of √ASCRIBE_FAULT. okol is the other Index 2 fault lemma, not a second sense. tulajdonít, elismer, and jóváír are not on this tree.

Composition is V(DP) on the ACC Target. -ért is clothing the Charge DP wears (K on the Abney spine). V(ért(DP)) is the wrong composition — same wrapper-K cut as English for. A clause under hogy / mert, when hosted by amiatt / azért, is that same Charge, not a new theta role. Definite conjugation is Agree with a definite Target, not a second object. There is no accusative clitic that doubles the DP the way Bulgarian го does; őt replaces the DP or sits in Focus, and it is still one Target.

Pronoun height: őt resumes Target; neki does not. Inanimate Target is fine. Inanimate subject as Judge is not generated — that is the Voice filter, not a Case accident. Hungarian does not promote Target with a periphrastic passive of the Polish został obwiniony / Bulgarian беше обвинен type; 3pl hibáztatták / okolják can suppress a named Judge, and that is not a new argument. Reflexive magát corefers Judge and Target. It is not a demoted external Judge.

Outer CAUSE wraps Voice. The causee, not the weather, is the Judge. Weather still fails as inner Judge under the wrap. There is no Neg-raising out of Charge.

Omission does not demote Charge to a pure adjunct. The -ért layer is optional in the numeration; it is still an argument when present. The diagnostic is participanthood under Case, binding, Focus, and WH — not omitability. Charge clauses are islands in a way rationale adjuncts are not.
