Working paper. German micro-entry for Index 2 Attitude fault-ascribe, beside live attributeATT · zuschreiben and live creditMERIT · zuschreiben. Geometry from Lexical_Entry_Blame_Argument_Structure; NegQ maps from Negative_Questions_Blame (chats 13 / 22), which already covers Groups A–D. The live ATT page is the Case contrast: zuschreiben ACC = Charge + DAT Target; beschuldigen ACC = Target. Its contrast string already prints the genitive Charge (Der Ausschuss hat den Auftragnehmer der Verspätung beschuldigt). wegen and the dass-clause are the other ordinary clothes of these lemmas; they are not that printed string. wofür is the Group D R-pronoun already named on English blame: it resumes Charge, not a bet Platform. There is no Hungarian Focus note to import, and no Polish genitive of negation: German’s genitive is the Charge case. Constructed diagnostics diagnose those clothes, light-noun Schuld / Beschuldigung, and the missing DOC / MeasureP / mit-frame / HAVE / SWAP. They are working-paper hypotheses, not spontaneous-speech citations and not fake elicitation. Group C blame is already closed. Navajo stays deferred.
Constructed examples. Frames below are packaging hypotheses aligned with the lexical entry, the Blame NegQ paper, and the string already used as contrast on attribute-att-de.html (Der Ausschuss hat den Auftragnehmer der Verspätung beschuldigt). wegen, the dass-clause, and companion verantwortlich machen are the clothes that one string does not show. Cause-true and settlement are not entailed — same missing defaults as English blame and German ATT / MERIT. Do not fake elicitation. The Index 2 lemma is beschuldigen; Perfekt hat beschuldigt is the completed-event string already on the ATT page, not a second root. German has no Slavic aspect pair to file. FIN / XFER ledger strings appear only as contrast pointers and are not Index 2 Attitude forms. Feminine der Verspätung is genitive or dative; the accusative Target beside it is what shows the Charge reading. Masculine des Betrugs spells the genitive apart from dative dem Betrug.
Sense-class · blame / ATT / MERIT / XFER split (Index 2 line). Index 2 lists German Attitude as beschuldigen, verantwortlich machen, zuschreiben (Vol. 7). This page deepens the ascribe-fault reading of beschuldigen as √ASCRIBE_FAULT. Companion verantwortlich machen is the same ACC = Target cloth; it is not a second sense. A legal / speech-act lean of beschuldigen stays on this root; it is not a German chargeACCUSE page. Bare zuschreiben is content-ascribe at attribute-att-de.html (ACC = Charge, DAT Target). The same letters host merit polarity at credit-merit-de.html, often via light-noun Verdienst. Do not treat zuschreiben as the blame lemma. Ledger / book-HAVE readings sit at attributeXFER and a FIN pointer gutschreiben only — do not deepen FIN.
Scout / deferred. Light-noun Schuld / Beschuldigung, and the Group D cloth die Schuld geben, are scout-leaning. On that cloth the accusative is the noun Schuld and the dative is Target — not beschuldigen’s accusative Target, and not zuschreiben’s free Charge. an+DAT on Schuld and onto-geometry (die Schuld auf jemanden schieben) are scout, not verbal frames of beschuldigen, and not elicited. Navajo HANDLE packaging is deferred. No fake elicitation.

Hierarchy

Same inventory as English blame, Spanish culpar, French blâmer, Italian incolpare, Japanese 責める, Mandarin 怪 / 责备, Polish obwiniać / winić, Bulgarian обвинявам / виня, and Hungarian hibáztat / okol. Not five-place. Not four sisters of one V. Surface count can name the board, the weather, the delay, and an outer cause — but the lexicon does not list four co-arguments of √ASCRIBE_FAULT.

Intended labeling (shared with English · German cloth)

√ASCRIBE_FAULT + VoiceJ(Judge) + Target + Charge  ·  hierarchy Judge > Target > Charge (1+2)

Voice introduces Judge (proto-Agent of the attitude). The ascription relates Target to Charge. German spells the productive cloth as ACC Target plus a Charge in the genitive, under wegen, or under dass — jemanden einer Sache beschuldigen, jemanden wegen einer Sache beschuldigen, jemanden beschuldigen, dass…. Companion jemanden wegen einer Sache verantwortlich machen is the same Target. The accusative den Auftragnehmer is visibly Target. ihn resumes that Target. Dative ihm is not blame’s Target on beschuldigen; ihm is the dative Target of zuschreiben and of MERIT zuschreiben. Light-noun Schuld / Beschuldigung is scout packaging of the same ascription, not a second root and not a reason to move blame onto zuschreiben. Optional high Affectee / outer cause wraps Voice; they are not listed inner arguments.

No MeasureP. There is no verbal Amount+Denomination object. Degrees that sneak in (welchen Teil der Schuld, a partitive on the light noun) live on the Abney spine of that noun — Left Branch Condition for sell / payGIVE / chargeFEE / creditFIN does not apply as a verbal diagnostic here. Polish GEN-neg rewrites MeasureP of FIN/deduct. German has no genitive of negation. The genitive on beschuldigen is selected Charge case, present with or without nicht. nicht does not rewrite the accusative Target into that genitive, and it does not move Charge into a second accusative. The working-paper NegQ keeps the accusative on Target, parallel to ATT Charge staying accusative under nicht on attribute-att-de.html. That is packaging. It is not an elicited denial of a Slavic genitive German does not have.

What Group D changes for German blame is morphological accusative on Target against dative on the ATT/MERIT twin, the genitive / wegen / dass Charge clothes, the R-pronoun wofür, and the light-noun split that keeps Schuld off zuschreiben. What it does not change is the inventory. There is no Hungarian preverbal Focus host to rank, and no Bulgarian multiple-WH cluster to import. Weather still satisfies Target and fails Judge. Cause-true is still not entailed. Target and Charge still do not invert at Transfer cost. Treating blame as Agent > Theme > Goal, collapsing it with zuschreiben because all three lemmas sit on the Index 2 line, or collapsing it with XFER/FIN because a dative can also name an account under gutschreiben, predicts a DOC, a HAVE entailment, a MeasureP LBC host, or a grammatical weather-as-Judge — none of those exist on blame.

German frames · Case clothes

Group D packages ascribe-fault without a productive DOC. Productive cloth: Target ACC. Charge is genitive on beschuldigen (the event or the fault-type; the cloth the ATT page already prints), wegen (both the primary and the companion), or a dass-clause. Overlap is not ranked as exclusive. A bare für-PP is not filed as a fourth default of beschuldigen. für shows up as the companion’s other Charge preposition and as the host that wofür / dafür, dass spell; that overlap is not ranked. Cheap NegQ association and cheap WH track ACC = Target, or the case / preposition / complementizer that hosts Charge. ATT and MERIT keep ACC on Charge and DAT on Target. There is no clitic doubling: ihn replaces the Target DP. It does not write it twice.

# Haben sie das schlechte Wetter der Verspätung nicht beschuldigt? — meaning the weather didn’t cause it. cause-true not a default

A bare nicht before the participle on the canonical NegQ most readily challenges the ascription event or the accusative Target. Challenging the Charge wants the genitive, the wegen-phrase, or the clause under dass, already in the associate. Negation does not grow a double-object, does not move Charge into a second accusative, does not turn Target into the dative of zuschreiben, and does not produce a genitive of negation — the genitive that is already there is Charge. HOLD is not cause-true. German has no preverbal Focus uniqueness of the Hungarian kind, and V2 word order is ordinary clause shape, not a Focus diagnostic. The Polish note “GEN-neg off on Charge unless Charge is a QP” names a host German blame does not have. A measuring QP is a FIN object, not this verb’s Charge. The unambiguous accusative in the diagnostic is den Auftragnehmer / das schlechte Wetter, resumed by ihn / es.

WH / NegQ diagnostics · no Focus host · no MeasureP LBC

Unlike sell / payGIVE / chargeFEE / bet / creditFIN, blame has no verbal MeasureP. There is therefore no Left-Branch Condition of the Amount-from-Denomination type on √ASCRIBE_FAULT. Degrees that appear are DP-internal on the light noun Schuld. nicht does not rewrite the Target/Charge association. ATT’s parallel, on the live twin, is that Charge stays accusative under nicht. There is no Group C multiple-WH cluster and no Hungarian Focus uniqueness to rank here.

  1. ✓ Wer hat den Auftragnehmer der Verspätung beschuldigt? WH = Judge
  2. ✓ Wen haben sie der Verspätung beschuldigt? WH = Target · accusative wen · not wem
  3. ✓ Wessen haben sie den Auftragnehmer beschuldigt? WH = Charge · genitive
  4. ✓ Weswegen haben sie den Auftragnehmer beschuldigt? WH = Charge · wegen
  5. ✓ Wofür haben sie den Auftragnehmer verantwortlich gemacht? R-pronoun = Charge · companion · not a bet Platform
  6. ✓ Wofür haben sie den Auftragnehmer beschuldigt? same R-pronoun on beschuldigen · resumes Charge · not ranked as a bare für-PP default
  7. ✓ Wen haben sie der Verspätung nicht beschuldigt? WH–Neg Target · association not flipped onto Charge

  16. * Wen hat das schlechte Wetter der Verspätung beschuldigt? weather still not Judge

The shared hierarchy ranks Judge > ACC Target > genitive/PP/CP Charge > outer. German does not front a multiple-WH cluster of the Bulgarian or Polish kind, and it does not park one constituent in a Hungarian Focus position. There is no ranking of Target against a silent Purpose, Price, or Theme₂. Cheap NegQ association tracks the accusative Target. Productive Target WH is wen — not wem. Productive Charge WH is wessen / weswegen / wofür, not bare was and not wem. wofür is one WH word. It does not strand für, and it does not resume a bet Platform.

ACC Target ≠ ATT Charge · genitive Charge ≠ GEN-neg · ≠ zuschreiben

Blame’s accusative is the ascribee under HOLD — not sell Theme, not ATT Charge, not FIN Amount. Charge in the genitive / wegen / dass is the content of the fault — not ledger Amount, not sell Price, not pay Consideration. ATT’s accusative is Charge and ATT’s Target is dative (hat dem Auftragnehmer die Verspätung zugeschrieben; haben ihm die Verspätung zugeschrieben). MERIT uses the same letters with Verdienst. Index 2 prints zuschreiben on the same line and this page does not deepen it as blame. Group D: German keeps the Target/Charge association under nicht, keeps ihn on Target, and does not put the Charge in a second accusative. Same dative letters can show up next to a ledger account under gutschreiben — different object, and not deepened here.

Geometry · blame ≠ zuschreiben ATT ≠ zuschreiben MERIT ≠ attributeXFER ≠ sell

In Der Ausschuss beschuldigt den Auftragnehmer der Verspätung, the committee holds that the contractor is responsible for the delay. That is ascription of fault, not HAVE of goods and not ledger INCREMENT. The contractor is Target. The delay is Charge. HOLD is an attitude; cause-true is not a presupposed fact.

English twin spells for-frame accusative Target / for-Charge, and on-frame accusative Charge / on-Target. Spanish twin: a-Target / de-Charge. French twin: accusative Target / pour-Charge. Italian twin: accusative Target / di-Charge. Japanese twin: accusative Target under 責める; ni Target under light-noun; de / no sei-de Charge. Mandarin twin: Target post-V or 把-fronted; Charge via 因为. Polish twin: morphological ACC Target; Charge za / o / za to, że. Bulgarian twin: direct-object Target; Charge за / в / bare че. Hungarian twin: ACC Target; Charge -ért; Focus+nem. German twin: ACC Target; Charge genitive / wegen / dass; wofür resumes Charge; no DOC and no Focus host. Weather OK as Target, not as Judge. Document-metonymy Judge OK.

    GEN / PP_wegen Charge ]

German blame never assigns four structural Cases. Target is accusative. Charge wears genitive, wegen, or a CP under dass. No low ApplHAVE. No low ApplSWAP. No ApplTASK. No MeasureP. High Appl / Affectee is extra when present and is not a listed argument of √ASCRIBE_FAULT. Perfekt hat beschuldigt is not a second root. verantwortlich machen is the other Index 2 fault expression, not a second sense. The adjective verantwortlich sits in the complex predicate; it is not a verbal prefix and not a Focus particle. zuschreiben and gutschreiben are not on this tree.

Composition is V(DP) on the accusative Target. The genitive and the P on Charge are clothing the DP wears (K on the Abney spine, or a selected relational P that does not add a fourth verbal argument). V(wegen(DP)) is the wrong composition — same wrapper-K cut as English for. The dass-clause is a CP argument, not a rationale adjunct and not a second object. A correlative dafür is a host for that same CP; it is not a new theta role. wofür is the WH of that host. There is no accusative clitic that doubles the DP the way Bulgarian го does. ihn replaces the DP, and it is still one Target.

Pronoun height: ihn / sie / es resume Target on beschuldigen; ihm / ihr do not. On the light-noun scout, ihm can be the dative Target of die Schuld geben — that is a different cloth, and it is still not zuschreiben. Inanimate Target is fine. Inanimate subject as Judge is not generated — that is the Voice filter, not a Case accident. Passive promotes Target (wurde beschuldigt). It does not promote Charge into a subject that still takes a bare accusative Target. man can suppress a named Judge; it does not add an argument. Reflexive sich on sich beschuldigen corefers Judge and Target. It is not the passive and not a demoted external Judge.

Outer cause wraps Voice. The causee, not the weather, is the Judge. Weather still fails as inner Judge under the wrap. There is no Neg-raising out of Charge.

Omission does not demote Charge to a pure adjunct. Selected case layers and the dass-clause are optional in the numeration; they are still arguments when present. The diagnostic is participanthood under Case, binding, and WH — not omitability. Charge clauses are islands in a way rationale adjuncts are not.
