Hierarchy

Same inventory as English charge_FEE. Not four-place. Surface count can name SoFi, Pat, twenty dollars, and a bitcoin, but the lexicon does not list four co-arguments of √CHARGE_FEE. The light noun is seikyū; it is not a second root.

$20 = nijū-doru = one MeasureP. Orthography / #P morphology is not extra arity. Amount and Denomination are both inner arguments of that object. Composition is V(#P), not V(n)(U). 円 and ドル are Watanabe # heads, not verbal sisters. There is no fifth argument “currency.”

Geometry is 1+2 with optional outer Consideration: one Initiator, one applied Source, one measuring object. That is the FROM dual of harau’s Appl_HAVE. It is not English DOC copied as two o Themes, not bet’s 1+3, and not uru’s HAVE-goods + de-Price.

Working hierarchy: Chargor_ga > Payer/Source_{ni / silent} > MeasureP ⟨n,U⟩_o (> Consideration PP). o-Payer (MeasureP implicit) is a register the lexical entry leaves open; it is not logged as a result here, and it is not licensed together with o-MeasureP.

Companion チャージする (chāji-suru) is a loan light verb on the same √CHARGE_FEE cloth — Chargor ga, Payer ni or silent, MeasureP o. It is not a second root, not charge_ACCOUNT, and not kokuhatsu.

No English DOC flip into two accusative Themes. MeasureP stays one o. Payer is silent or ni (FROM). Consideration stays outside a second ACC. Double-o is not the cloth that makes Payer and MeasureP two Themes of one domain. Cheapness under a question tracks the o-#P unless the Payer or the Consideration is independently in focus. Strings below are constructed from the Group A derivation and the lexical entry; they are not field elicitation.

MeasureP WH · ikura / nan-doru / nan-en

WH forces Amount ≠ Denomination inside one Case object of o. Verbal WH sees the #P, not unit and degree as two objects of seikyū. Watanabe: Amount in Spec,#P, Denomination as #°, Case as o on the phrase. Japanese does not raise T to C. ka is the question C. Amount-WH is interpreted in situ (unselective binding), or the whole #P scrambles. A copy of the degree that leaves #° next to V is not generated.

ikura is the degree match to English how much: strategy B, U bound by context (dollar, yen), #° silent. nan-doru / nan-en copy the # head with the WH: strategy A, the pied-pipe of how many dollars / how many yen. Both are one object. nani go-juu-o (extract spelling go-juu; 五十) peels a sortal nani off a numeral remnant — the Japanese of *what fifty, underivable as a split of this #P. ikura doru-o is Amount-out: the degree leaves, and the unit stays as if it were the sister of seikyū-shita. The derivation’s chain, when there is a copy, is {#P₂, t₂} of the whole phrase. nan-doru-o scrambled is strategy A on that same t₂. There is no Amount-trace inside #P with doru stranded.

Two constraints conspire on the stars: #P integrity (Amount in Spec,#P; the unit does not move alone and does not stay behind as sister of V), and Double-o (a Payer DP cannot become a second ACC Theme beside the #P). Rescues are ikura, nan-doru-o, and nan-en-o. The rescue does not make doru or en a sister of seikyū-shita.

In SoFi-ga Pat-ni nijū-doru-o seikyū-shita, Pat is the person the money comes FROM. In Pat-ni nijū-doru-o haratta, Pat is the person the money goes TO. Same letter ni. The Appl is not the same. Follow-ups flip.

• ≠ pay_GIVE · harau / 払う. Shared MeasureP ⟨n,U⟩ and a human ni phrase. Split: HAVE of Amount vs FROM / DEBIT. e2 of harau is Recipient HAS the Amount. e2 of charge_FEE is debit / OWE of ⟨n,U⟩ on the Payer. Payment-true is a later pay_GIVE, not e2 of FEE. Both refuse Double-o. On harau the refused second o is goods; on seikyū the refused second o is the Payer beside the fee.
• ≠ sell · uru / 売る. uru: Recipient HAS goods (o); Price is de-MeasureP. seikyū: money is the o MeasureP of the debit; bitkoin-no daikin-to-shite / no tame / de is Consideration, not Price-as-Theme of de. nijū-doru-de utta questions a Price. nijū-doru-o seikyū-shita questions the fee. A de on seikyū does not move the twenty out of o.
• ≠ deduct. Shared FROM + MeasureP Hom. English deduct keeps Domain as from-PP and the decrement as ACC. English charge_FEE can promote Payer to ACC beside the MeasureP (DOC-cloth). Japanese does not copy that promotion as Double-o. Payer is ni or silent; the #P keeps o. kara-Domain on a deduct packaging is a different cloth, not evidence that ni was secretly a second Theme.
• ≠ charge_ACCUSE · kokuhatsu / 告発. Ascription: Judge > Target > Accusation. No selected MeasureP. No Appl_FROM of money. *Pat-ni sagi-o seikyū-shita puts ACCUSE content on the FEE verb. Point the legal neighbour to charge-accuse.html. Do not stack a fee #P and sagi as one grid.
• ≠ pay_BILL · seikyūsho-o harau. The invoice is an ACC document of harau. MeasureP, when it appears, is instrument (de), not the Theme of √CHARGE_FEE. Link pay-bill.html. Crossing the roots smuggles a four-place reading and a Double-o.
• ≠ charge_ACCOUNT. to-card / to-account Destination is book-entry, not this ni-Payer. chāji-suru on the fee cloth is still FEE. A ledger Goal is a different packaging; this page does not merge it.
• Debit-true is e2. SoFi-ga Pat-ni nijū-doru-o seikyū-shita is true when ⟨20, doru⟩ is debited / owed on Pat. A follow-up that Pat never paid (harawanakatta) does not deny the seikyū event. A follow-up that nothing was owed on Pat denies e2. Goods-HAVE is uru’s e2. Guilt-true is not entailed on kokuhatsu and is irrelevant on FEE.

Voice introduces Chargor. Appl_FROM introduces Payer (overt ni, or silent x). The #P sits as Incremental Theme of the debit; o is on that phrase. Consideration attaches above the inner FROM and does not take a second o. There is no Recipient HAVE shell. Putting one in is how seikyū gets misread as harau. shi is the verbalizer (√SURU) on the light noun seikyū; -ta is T[PAST]. Spelled PF: seikyū-shita. The same shell hosts chāji-shi-ta.

Japanese seikyū does not assign four structural Cases. Chargor is ga. Payer is ni or silent. MeasureP is one o. Consideration is inside P. Double-o (*Pat-o nijū-doru-o seikyū-shita) is the morphological ceiling on two ACC Themes: strongly degraded, and not the packaging the entry uses. English can look like a double object because Payer and MeasureP are both ACC on that cloth; Japanese does not reproduce that string as two o’s. o-Payer with the MeasureP dropped remains register-open — scout, not a second Theme slot filled in here.

Proto-roles are shell-local. Chargor is a partial Proto-Agent (SoFi, the shop, the meter). Payer is Proto-Source, not Proto-Recipient. MeasureP is Incremental Theme of the debit; Hom on ⟨n,U⟩. Denomination is the #° of that object, not a theta role of its own.

Group A (English, Japanese, Mandarin, Navajo) recodes the FROM cloth of √CHARGE_FEE. It does not add a fifth GF. This tick is Japanese charge_FEE only. The English twin is live at charge-fee.html. • Mandarin. 收…费 / 向…收费: Payer in a preverbal PP or after 向; 把 fronts the whole QP, never Amount-minus-unit; 控告 is ACCUSE. Scout — not a micro-entry this tick.
• Navajo. A levy-stem may eat the unit; denomination WH may be a stem choice rather than a stranded classifier. Predicted, not elicited.

Open items

• ni vs o on the Payer of 請求. Still scout-open. The SoFi derivation uses silent Payer and the lexical entry allows ni or o by register. ni + o-MeasureP is the logged cloth. o-Payer with MeasureP implicit is not closed. *Pat-o nijū-doru-o (both as ACC Themes) stays rejected / strongly degraded.
• Mandarin / Navajo micro-entries. Same Group A geometry; 向 / 把 and levy-stem packaging. Deferred — do not invent depth this tick.
• Passive of seikyū-sare-ta. English promotes Payer, or MeasureP when Payer is dropped. The Japanese promotee is not in the SoFi extract. Left open; not invented as a result.
• Border nouns (cover charge / service-charge sortals beside seikyū). One MeasureP with a sortal N, or ACCOUNT coerced to FEE. Speculative packaging, not a fifth slot.
