iemand iets schuldig zijn. The head is the copula zijn plus the adjective schuldig. Van Dale’s free dictionary (archive 17 April 2024 of the gratis woordenboek) labels schuldig bijvoeglijk naamwoord, bijwoord. Sense 1, verplicht te betalen, prints hoeveel bent u hem nog schuldig? u is the subject. bent agrees with that subject. hem is a bare pronoun. The amount is the interrogative hoeveel, with no preposition. Sense 2, verplicht, gehouden tot, prints iem. gehoorzaamheid schuldig zijn. The slot abbreviation iem. is bare. gehoorzaamheid is bare. The ANS names the two complements. Algemene Nederlandse Spraakkunst 20.4.1, example 3: Ilona is mij ƒ 1000,- schuldig. mij is a meewerkend voorwerp, bare. ƒ 1000,- is an oorzakelijk voorwerp, bare. The Debtor Ilona is the subject of is. Section 20.4.2 lists schuldig zijn and verschuldigd zijn among koppelwerkwoorden met een adjectief whose meewerkend voorwerp is the person who receives something. Section 20.7 defines the oorzakelijk voorwerp as a bare nominal constituent beside a nominal predicate. It cannot begin with a preposition. It is not a lijdend voorwerp: the predicate is naamwoordelijk, the constituent does not passivize, and it does not agree with the verb. Predicative schuldig in these lines is uninflected.
aan is printed for the Creditor. ANS 20.7.1 (version 3.0, Dirk Pijpops, January 2026), example 6: De hawala-bankier is nu geld schuldig aan zijn medebankier in het buitenland. geld is the oorzakelijk voorwerp. aan zijn medebankier is the indirect object. A bare full noun in the Creditor slot before the sum is unprinted. It is not filed as a frame. ANS 20.4.3.2 says a meewerkend voorwerp can in general be bare or aan, with different placement. The exclusion list there does not include schuldig zijn. That section itself prints no schuldig + aan example. The aan example is 20.7.1. woorden.org, sense 1, gives verschuldigd as a synonym and prints iemand een bedrag schuldig zijn and Je bent me 100 euro schuldig. It says the word stands in the Woordenlijst Nederlandse Taal. The English Wiktionary Dutch section prints “guilty” and no debt frame.
Where this frame diverges from English owe. English owe is a verb. The Debtor is the subject. The Creditor is a bare object, owes me $5, I owe Janet $50, or to after the sum, She still owes £3 000 to her father. The Amount is one object. Dutch puts the Debtor in the subject of zijn. schuldig is the adjectival predicate. The Creditor is a bare indirect object or aan. The Amount is the bare oorzakelijk voorwerp. The two English clothes each have a printed Dutch clothes. The Dutch head is the copula plus the adjective.

Both clothes are printed. The opened clause lines are dank, revanche, alles, and services. de verschuldigde gelden is attributive and prints no Creditor. A money clause with verschuldigd plus a Creditor is unprinted in these entries.
The noun schuld is a different frame. Van Dale (same 8 July 2023 capture): de, v(m), plural schulden. Sense 1, financiële verplichting tegenover een ander, prints een schuld aangaan, vereffenen, afbetalen and zich in de schulden steken. tegenover een ander is the definition. It is not an example prepositional phrase. No bij is printed. woorden.org prints Ik moet de bank nog een schuld van 10.000 euro afbetalen. de bank is bare beside afbetalen. van marks the sum inside the noun. A legal gloss on that page, outside the example block, says someone een ‘schuld’ heeft bij een ander. That bij is definition prose. A filled clause with hebben and bij is unprinted. It is not filed. The noun examples do not put the Amount and the Creditor in the two complement slots that schuldig zijn prints.

The positive success lines are Taaladvies, Team Taaladvies, and Woordcombinaties. Van Dale gives the weak forms dankte, heeft gedankt. The verb is not separable.
