schulden ‘owe’. The debt reading has a subject, a dative, and one accusative. The Debtor is the subject. The subject slot is the nominative: the verb agrees, ich schulde, er schuldet, Sie schulden. The Creditor is dative. The dictionaries print jemandem, not jemanden. The Debt is accusative, etwas. The schema the dictionaries print is jemandem etwas schulden. DWDS writes it ⟨jmdm. etw. schulden⟩. English Wiktionary marks the verb “[with dative]” and glosses that same string. PONS writes jdm etw. Langenscheidt writes jemandem etwas schulden.
Duden’s spelling line is er schuldet ihr Geld. er is the nominative subject. ihr is dative. Geld is the accusative. Sense a, money that must be paid, prints jemandem eine größere Summe schulden and was schulde ich Ihnen [für die Reparatur]? Sense b, a moral or social debt, prints the same clothes: jemandem Dank, Respekt, eine Antwort, Erklärung schulden. DWDS’s money lines are jmdm. 50 Euro, viel, nichts schulden and the corpus line Sie schulden uns Geld. The moral lines are jmdm. Dank, Gehorsam, Rechenschaft schulden, jmdm. eine Erklärung, einen Besuch schulden, and Sie schulden mir noch eine Antwort. Langenscheidt’s money line is er schuldet mir noch 20 Euro. The explanation line is dafür schuldest du mir eine Erklärung. German Wiktionary prints Ich schulde dir noch 20 Mark and the collocation jemandem eine Erklärung schulden.
Where this frame diverges from English owe. English prints a double object, person then sum: owes me $5, you owe me ten dollars. The same person can stand in to after the sum: She still owes £3 000 to her father. German prints one accusative, the debt, and the person in the dative. er schuldet ihr Geld is that dative. ihr is not the accusative sie, and it is not zu. A line with the person bare in the accusative before the money, English owes her the money, is unprinted. It is not filed as a frame. A line with zu for that person is unprinted. It is not English to, and it is not filed as a frame.
English owe also covers ‘owe X to Y’, the credit for a benefit. German does not keep that reading on schulden. Duden’s life line is marked rare, and the parenthesis is the other verb: ich schulde (selten; verdanke) ihm mein Leben. The lemma for that credit is verdanken. DWDS’s schema is ⟨jmdm. etw. verdanken⟩. The person, or the cause, is dative. The benefit is accusative. schuldig sein is not a second verb. It is the adjective. The debt in the dictionaries opened for current German is accusative. Grimm’s older genitive is a separate note below. It is not the guilt genitive.
The Debtor is the subject of the active debt clause: er in er schuldet ihr Geld, ich in was schulde ich Ihnen, Sie in Sie schulden uns Geld. The Creditor is the dative: ihr, Ihnen, uns, mir, dir, jemandem. The Debt is the accusative: Geld, eine größere Summe, 50 Euro, 20 Euro, eine Erklärung, eine Antwort. für plus an accusative is the ground in the lines that print it. On verdanken the subject is the person who has the benefit, the dative is the cause, and the accusative is that benefit. On einer Sache geschuldet sein the thing caused is the subject, the cause stays dative, and the Creditor is absent.

Marking map. Read the noun, then the mark. One dative belongs to more than one reading.
Each debt row lines up one German slot with the mark English owe prints. The alignment is = where the slot is an object in both, or shift where English uses a bare Creditor or to and German uses the dative. Printed lines come first. A constructed German line reuses a printed marking. It is labelled constructed. verdanken is a separate row, not a second clothes of schulden.

EN · to
She still owes £3 000 to her father.
English owe · Oxford · the other English line is the bare father
Split English has the bare object and to. German has the dative. The credit reading, owe X to Y, is verdanken.
verdanken is the credit lemma. The subject has the benefit. The subject is not a debtor who must pay the accusative back. English I owe my success to my teachers is this row. It is not jmdm. 50 Euro schulden.
Duden keeps mein Leben off the ordinary debt line. ich schulde (selten; verdanke) ihm mein Leben. DWDS still prints jmdm. sein Leben schulden under the same schema as the money, and it lists jmdm. etw. verdanken beside that line. The rarity label is Duden’s. The two lemmas stay apart. A sum is not among the accusatives verdanken prints. Ich verdanke ihr zehn Euro is unprinted. It is not filed as a frame.
schuldig sein is the adjective. Duden glosses jemandem [noch] Geld schuldig sein with schulden, and prints was bin ich Ihnen schuldig? and, in a transferred sense, jemandem Dank, Rechenschaft, eine Erklärung schuldig sein. English Wiktionary, German schuldig: “[with accusative]” owing, bist du ihm keine Erklärung schuldig, and “[with genitive]” guilty, des Mordes schuldig. The current debt is the accusative. The dative sich is the creditor when the person owes the thing to himself. Grimm, Deutsches Wörterbuch: the older language mostly put the content of the obligation in the genitive; New High German usually uses the accusative with schuldig sein. That older genitive is the obligation. des Mordes and eines Verbrechens are the guilt sense. They are not the ten euros.
geschuldet sein and sich verdanken drop the Creditor. Duden’s set phrase: einer Sache geschuldet sein, längere Öffnungszeiten sind verändertem Kundenverhalten geschuldet. The opening hours are the subject. verändertem Kundenverhalten is dative, the cause. English Wiktionary files the past participle as “to be due to [with dative]”. Duden sense 2 of verdanken, marked seltener, is sich verdanken: dieses Ergebnis verdankt sich einer sorgfältigen Prüfung des Falles. DWDS lists (sich einer Sache) verdanken among the expressions for being due to something. The Swiss thank-you sense, Duden sense 3 and PONS sense 2, is not the debt and not this credit frame. Langenscheidt prints jemanden verdanken for that Swiss “to thank someone”. The credit examples stay jemandem plus an accusative benefit.
payGIVE · bezahlen is the transfer. Schulden names the debt. Bezahlen is the page where a payer’s payment puts the amount with a recipient. This page does not treat er schuldet ihr Geld as that transfer. payBILL · bezahlen takes the bill or the debt as its object.
Which object the clause treats as the object is the note Causative templates and argument selection. This page does not edit that note. The accusative of schulden is the debt. The Creditor is the dative. It is not that accusative.
Argument difference. English owe allows a double object, owe him ten dollars, and owe money to him, and it uses the same verb for owe my success to her. German schulden has a nominative Debtor, a dative Creditor, and one accusative Debt, for the money and for eine Erklärung. verdanken is the credit lemma. The person there is still dative. The accusative is the benefit, not a sum still to be paid.
Printed dictionary lines come first. A constructed line reuses a printed marking. It is labelled constructed.
