Debtor, Theme, Creditor · Portuguese marking · working claim, revisable

dever ‘owe’. In the debt reading the Debtor is the subject. The verb agrees. Infopédia’s present is devo, deves, deve, devemos, deveis, devem. Priberam labels the conjugation regular, and the participle regular. Wikcionário files it as a regular verb of the second conjugation, -er, participle devido. The Theme, the sum or the thing owed, is one direct object. The Creditor is a plus a noun, or a dative clitic. The clitic the school grammar names for that indirect object is lhe, and lhes for the plural.

Michaelis, sense 2, “Ser devedor de uma quantia ou valor a,” prints Devo muito dinheiro a meus parentes, Devia a todos os agiotas da cidade, and Naquela época ainda devia a casa e o carro. In the last line a casa is the article plus the noun, beside o carro. Both are direct objects. The preposition a is the one in a meus parentes and in a todos os agiotas. Ele deve muito is Aulete’s intransitive bracket: the amount, and no spelled creditor. Aulete’s modern schema for the two-object debt line is [tdi. + a], and the line is Devia uma dinheirama ao armazém. ao is a plus the article.

The clitic. Aulete’s classical gratitude line is Devo-lhe muito pelo serviço que me prestou. lhe is the creditor. muito is the direct object. It is not a spelled sum. Priberam files the form devemos-lhe as first person plural of dever, present and preterite, and prints no debt sentence on that page. No money line opened here pairs lhe with a sum. Devo-lhe dez euros puts Aulete’s lhe on a sum of the kind Michaelis and Aulete spell as a full noun. The digits are not a citation. It is constructed.

European and Brazilian clitic use, as the grammars print it, not as a dever citation. Brasil Escola, listing Bechara 2009 and Cunha and Cintra 2008 among its sources, says lhe and lhes are the indirect-object clitics. Its pair is Entreguei o presente ao João beside Entreguei-lhe o presente. The same page calls O médico explicou tudo para ele popular speech, and O médico lhe explicou tudo the school norm. Where popular speech completes the verb with para mim, para você, para ele, the school norm writes lhe. Those verbs are entregar and explicar. They are not dever. Marcos Bagno, Parábola, 22 August 2025: spontaneous Brazilian speech does not use lhes. Singular lhe in that speech refers to você, not to ele or ela. Where the norm has lhe pedi, the speech he records is pedi a ele or pedi para ele. The verb is pedir. He also notes a disregard for the preposition a and an attachment to para. Devo muito dinheiro para ele reuses that para ele on Michaelis’s money object. It is constructed. No dictionary line opened here prints para as the creditor of dever. It is not filed as a frame of the entry.

Where this frame diverges from English owe. English prints a double object, the person bare beside the sum: owes me $5, I owe Janet $50. The same person can stand in to after the sum: She still owes £3 000 to her father. Portuguese prints one direct object, the sum, and marks the creditor with a or with lhe. A line with the person bare before the sum, Devo Maria dez euros, is unprinted. It is not filed as a frame. A core line that stacks the clitic and a full a-phrase, Devo-lhe o dinheiro a meus parentes, is also unprinted. Spanish prints that doubling, Le debo dinero al banco. The Portuguese debt lines opened here print a or lhe, not both. The modal is a further divergence, and it is a separate sense, below. English keeps modal ought off the debt places. Portuguese dever is also the verb of obligation and of probability.

The reason phrase. Priberam’s sense 7 is “Estar reconhecido (a alguém) por.” The parentheses name the creditor and por. The entry prints no sentence. Aulete’s gratitude schema is “por favor ou bem contraído,” and the printed phrase is pelo serviço que me prestou. pelo is por plus the article. A different por sits on the legal due: dever por foro de uma propriedade 1$00 e um alqueire de trigo. That por names the tenure the sum is owed by. It is not the reason phrase of pelo serviço.

Places · who wears which marking

The Debtor is the subject of the active debt clause: the ending of devo and devia. The Theme is the direct object: muito dinheiro, uma dinheirama, a casa e o carro. The Creditor is a plus the person or the office, or the dative clitic where a line prints it. por and pelo are the reason in the lines that print them. On the credit and cause lines the direct object is not a sum. In dever-se a the thing caused is the subject, the cause stays in a, and the Creditor is absent. The fixed expression devido a is that cause reading as Priberam and Infopédia print it. No entry opened here prints a finite é devido a with the thing caused as the subject of the copula.
