Where pagar diverges from English pay (a bill). The English page keeps one accusative, the document, and brings the sum back as with or in. A person beside a sum is the sister page payGIVE. Portuguese pagar prints the bill or the debt as a direct object (a conta da eletricidade, contas, o empréstimo, a despesa), and it prints the sum as a bare noun phrase (o valor devido, um alto preço, o dinheiro). English pay the bill does not make the sum a bare object beside the document. Beside a thing, the person is an indirect object, a + noun, clitic lhe (ao senhorio … os aluguéis, pagou-lhe o carreto). English pay the bill does not put that person beside the document, and it has no clitic. When no thing object is present, the normative person stays indirect (pagar à Mónica, ao vendedor, pagar-lhe). English pay someone is a bare object. The attested direct object of the person is Aulete’s paga-os and Luft’s Já paguei o professor, pagá-lo. English pay the teacher matches that bare person. It does not split o / a from lhe.
por is not how pay the bill marks the bill. English pay the bill makes the bill the object. English pay for the repair puts the repair under for. Portuguese prints the bill as the direct object (a conta, contas, o empréstimo), and prints por on a different phrase: pela pintura da casa, por este livro, with the money or the price bare. em cheque is the means, the English in slot. The expiation line pagou por um erro is not the repair.
quitar, saldar, and liquidar take the debt or the account. Priberam’s object of quitar is a dívida. Michaelis’s object of saldar is suas dívidas, and Priberam’s and Infopédia’s object is uma conta. Michaelis’s object of liquidar on this frame is a dívida. A creditor in those objects is unprinted. Michaelis Quitaram-no releases a person from part of the debt. That person is not the creditor. abonar advances a sum, 200 dólares, and the person is a + noun. It does not print the account as the object. pagar is the verb that can put the creditor in the indirect object beside a thing, or, where the sources print it and no thing object is present, in the direct object.
