Buyer = a + NP · clitic lhe (lho = lhe + o) · Aulete’s label also para · Goods = direct object · Price = por + amount

A sale, on this reading, has a Seller, the Goods, a Buyer, and a Price. They are not four equal sisters of vender. Voice adds the Seller. The root’s complement is the Goods, a direct object. Portuguese nouns have no case ending, so that object is not a morphological accusative. Ciberdúvidas 22826 calls it a complemento directo, the thing sold, and the Buyer a complemento indirecto, the person to whom it is sold. A low ApplHAVE is the working home of that Buyer, the same added argument the English page gives the Recipient of sell. The drawing is revisable. The dictionaries print the preposition and the clitic. They do not print the head.

What is different from English sell. Cambridge prints [ + two objects ] on I sold him my car / I sold my car to him for $600, and the business entry prints sell sb sth in We are going to sell him our car. The buyer can be a bare object, him, with no preposition. The same entry’s other limb puts that buyer in to, and the price in for. Portuguese does not print a bare full noun, or a bare object pronoun in that first-object slot, as the Buyer. The full Buyer is an a-phrase. Ciberdúvidas 22826: Ele vendeu tudo ao Estado. Ciberdúvidas 7005 replaces ao Sr. Costa with lhe, and the flat with o, fused as lho: Se lho venderes. Aulete, a Brazilian dictionary, labels the commercial frame tdi. + a, para and fills the nephew with para: Vendeu o sítio para o sobrinho. Michaelis, also Brazilian, fills a in vendiam café a homens and a uma revista de fofoca. The Price that those lines leave out is a different marker. Aulete: Está vendendo o apartamento por duzentos mil reais. Ciberdúvidas 22826: Ele vendeu tudo por tuta e meia. English for is that Price. Portuguese spells it por.

a of the Buyer is not the article of the Goods, and not the Price. Priberam’s example ainda não vendeu a casa has no Buyer. The a of a casa is the feminine article. Aulete’s label on Vendeu a casa names a, para, and the example fills neither preposition. The nephew line is the one that fills para. The older Aulete block prints a rate on a se clause, a sessenta e sete reais o alqueire. That a is a unit price. It is not the Buyer.

Places · who wears which marking

No printed commercial line stacks a named Seller, a Buyer, the Goods, and por plus a sum. Ciberdúvidas prints ao Estado and no price, and por tuta e meia and no Buyer. Aulete prints para o sobrinho and no sum, and por duzentos mil reais and no Buyer. The four-place string below is constructed from those pieces.

Each row lines up one English slot with a Portuguese slot. The alignment type says what happens to the slot: = (same object status), or shift (a bare object or for ↔ the Portuguese marker the line prints). Printed dictionary lines come first. Every other Portuguese sentence is constructed, modelled on a printed line. They show the working alignment. They are not frequency, and not a bilingual corpus.

Examples

Argument difference. English can package the Buyer and the Goods as two bare objects, I sold him my car, or put the Buyer in to and the Price in for. Portuguese prints one direct object, the Goods. The full Buyer is a or, in Aulete, para. The clitic of that Buyer is lhe. The Price is por. A bare sell him the car has no Portuguese twin in the lines opened here.

Strings below are constructed, modelled on the printed lines. They are not spontaneous-speech citations and not dictionary lines. Pat and Chris continue the named-participant series on English sell. A name does not spell a role.

What se shows

The commercial passive or middle does not add a participant. It changes which place is the subject. On the agreeing plural, Ciberdúvidas 10657 equates Vendem-se estas casas with Estas casas são vendidas. The Goods are the subject. The Seller is not in the clause. The same answer treats singular Vende-se esta casa as an unnamed Seller, and treats non-agreeing vende-se casas as the form many people prefer and the form the answer rejects. Aulete’s O trigo vendia-se keeps a Price rate in the clause and still has no Buyer. A finite ser-passive that also names a Buyer and a sum is unprinted. The English buyer-passive on sell is a different promotion. Nothing further is constructed beyond the bare Vende-se casa above.

Notes

Working paper · October 2026 · Portuguese micro-entry · Beyond Index 2

Selling in Portuguese is four places with Portuguese cloth. Seller (Voice, subject), Goods (direct object), Buyer (a + NP, dative lhe, and Aulete’s para), Price (por + amount). English sell him the car is a bare object. Portuguese does not print that bare noun. English for is por. vender-se can put the Goods in the subject (vende-se casa). revender repeats the sale. comprar reverses it, and marks the Source with a or de.
