Buyer, Goods, Seller, Beneficiary, Price, shop · Portuguese cloth · working claim, revisable

Voice[Buyer] + complement of the root (Goods, direct object) + Seller in a+NP or de+NP where a line fills one + Beneficiary in para+NP where a line fills one + the same a-phrase left readable as para + Price in por where a line fills one + place in em where a line fills one

A purchase, on this reading, has a Buyer, the Goods, a Seller when a line fills one, a Beneficiary when a line fills one, a Price when a line fills one, and a place when a line fills one. They are not six equal sisters of comprar. Voice adds the Buyer. The root’s complement is the Goods, a direct object. Portuguese nouns have no case ending, so that object is not a morphological accusative. Aulete prints the person of the ring as a or de, in one frame: Comprou ao / do joalheiro um anel. Ciberdúvidas, citing the regency dictionaries of Celso Pedro Luft and Francisco Fernandes, prints both do Djalma and ao Djalma as the seller, and then leaves ao Djalma readable as the person who receives the car, because a equals para. Wiktionary prints the beneficiary in para: João comprou a boneca para sua filha. A dative clitic lhe is unprinted on this verb, so this page does not assign it. A Price is por plus a price name: por bom preço. A unit rate is unprinted. A shop na loja is unprinted. The place Michaelis prints is em on the apartment, na Av. Atlântica. The drawing is working and revisable. It is not a settled analysis, and it is not a claim about telicity.

What is different from the English gloss. Cambridge prints buy with [+ two objects] in He bought his mother some flowers, and the same line offers He bought some flowers for his mother. The seller in the articles opened is from: I bought my camera from a friend of mine. Portuguese does not give that beneficiary a bare noun. English from is not one Portuguese preposition. Aulete prints a and de for the jeweller. English for of a person matches the Wiktionary para. The same English for is not the Portuguese price: the price name that is printed is por. A numeral English for is unprinted in the Cambridge lines opened here. On Spanish comprar the selected a / le is the Seller, and the Beneficiary is para, and the grammar marks le ≠ su mamá. Portuguese a is not that split. The consultancy leaves one a-phrase as the seller or as para. On Italian comprare De Mauro glosses one gli as per lui o da lui. Portuguese prints no such gloss of lhe. On French acheter one full à+NP is the Seller or the Beneficiary. Portuguese prints that pair of readings on a, and also prints de for the seller and para for the beneficiary. On German kaufen the bare dative is the beneficiary, and on abkaufen that dative is the seller. Portuguese keeps one lemma.

No printed line stacks a Seller, a Beneficiary, the goods, and a sum. Aulete’s jeweller frame has the ring and no price. Wiktionary’s para line has the doll and no seller. The price sentence has isto and no person.

Each row lines up one English slot with a Portuguese slot. The alignment type says what happens to the slot: = (same object status), or shift (from / for ↔ the Portuguese marker the line prints). Printed dictionary lines come first. Every other sentence is constructed, modelled on a printed line. They show the working alignment, not frequency, and not a bilingual corpus.

Examples

Argument difference. English can package the beneficiary and the goods as two bare objects, He bought his mother some flowers, or put that person in for, and it puts the seller in from. Portuguese prints one direct object, the goods. The seller phrase that Aulete prints is a or de. The beneficiary phrase that Wiktionary prints is para. Ciberdúvidas leaves one a-phrase as the seller or as para. lhe is unprinted, so Portuguese lhe is not Italian gli and not Spanish le. On kaufen the dative is the beneficiary, and on abkaufen the dative is the seller. No Portuguese sell page is opened. The seller of a converse would be the subject. That seller is not the a-phrase or the de-phrase of comprar.

What the passive shows

A passive would be an operation on the same places. It would not add a participant. Wiktionary prints the participle comprado in the conjugation table. It is not given a clause, and it is not given a telicity reading. A finite passive with ser that promotes the goods, and a passive that keeps a seller or a beneficiary, are unprinted in the articles opened. The question on Ciberdúvidas prints Esse tipo de coisa compra-se ao mangaieiro. The goods are the subject of se, and the person is a. That line is the question, not the answer, and not a dictionary passive. Nothing further is constructed.

The other senses stay off the purchase frame. Aulete’s O marginal comprou a testemunha and Michaelis’s Comprei um dos guardas put the person in the direct object. Priberam’s Subornar, peitar and Infopédia’s matching sense name the bribe and print no clause. Wiktionary’s Comprei a ideia daquele rapaz is the adopt-an-opinion sense. Cambridge’s She'll never buy that story is the English believe sense. Those lines stop at the citation.

Cambridge’s from is the seller. Portuguese spells that person as a or as de. Cambridge’s for of a person, and the first object of [+ two objects], are the beneficiary. Portuguese spells a full phrase of that person as para, and also leaves the a-phrase as that reading. Spanish le is the seller, and Spanish para is the beneficiary. Italian gli is glossed both ways. French à covers both readings of a full noun. German kaufen spells the beneficiary as a bare dative. German abkaufen spells the seller as a bare dative.

On comprar the subject is the buyer. A seller phrase is a or de. A beneficiary phrase is para. The a-phrase is the person Ciberdúvidas leaves both ways. The analogy with English from and for is the added person-phrase. It is not a claim that a beneficiary and a seller are one role.

Notes

Buying in Portuguese is not one a. Ciberdúvidas leaves the a-phrase as the seller or as para. lhe is unprinted. Price is por plus a price name. A unit rate is unprinted. The shop wording na loja is unprinted. The place that is printed is em on the apartment. English buy X from Y is from. English buy something for someone is for. A numeral English for is unprinted in the lines opened. Spanish le is the Seller and Spanish para is the Beneficiary. Italian gli is glossed both ways. French acheter à leaves a full noun ambiguous. German kaufen puts the beneficiary in a bare dative. German abkaufen puts the seller in a bare dative.

Sense × language: buy · Portuguese (comprar). The purchase sense is the page. The bribe sense and the adopt-an-opinion line stay off the frame. adquirir is cited where a dictionary prints the purchase. No English buy hub. Geometry neighbors: buy · comprare, buy · comprar, buy · acheter, and buy · kaufen. No Index 2 Portuguese cell lists this verb.

Working paper. Portuguese micro-entry, the fifth language of buy. Dictionary frames were read on Priberam (comprar, and the form compramos-lhe), on Infopédia (Porto Editora, comprar), on Michaelis (comprar), on the Aulete page (comprar and adquirir), and on Portuguese Wiktionary, with Ciberdúvidas for the regency note that cites Luft and Fernandes, and with Cambridge for English buy.
Constructed examples. Dictionary lines are marked as printed. Every other full clause is marked constructed. The bare double object is starred because the filled person-marking beside the goods is a, de, or para. lhe, a unit rate, a numeral por+sum, and na loja are unprinted on comprar and are not constructed.
Arity: several places, not one flat verb. Index 2 does not list comprar. Surface count can name a buyer, the goods, a seller, a beneficiary, a price, and a place. The lexicon does not list those as co-arguments of one flat V. Voice adds the Buyer. The root takes the Goods. a or de adds a Seller where a line fills one. para adds a Beneficiary where a line fills one. The a-phrase is the person the consultancy leaves as seller or as para. por adds a Price where a line prints one. em adds a place where a line prints one. No telicity claim is made from the participle.
What this page does not do. It does not open an English page of buy. It does not edit kaufen, acheter, comprar, or comprare beyond the language list. The bribe sense and the believe line stop at the citation. Houaiss and 501 Portuguese Verbs were not opened.

Hierarchy

Not a flat grid of six sisters, and not one preposition copied from the English gloss. Voice adds the Buyer. The root takes the Goods. a+NP or de+NP adds the Seller where the line is the jeweller or do Djalma / ao Djalma as the seller. para+NP adds the Beneficiary where the line is para sua filha. The a-phrase also adds the person Ciberdúvidas leaves as para. por of a price name adds a Price. em adds the place of the apartment. The drawing is working and revisable.

What Portuguese changes, against Spanish le, is that the printed a-phrase is not assigned to the Seller alone, and de is also printed for that person. What Portuguese changes, against Italian gli, is that the two readings are printed on the full a-phrase, and lhe is unprinted. What Portuguese shares with English is de or a of a person, matching from, and para, matching for of a person. The printed Portuguese price name has no numeral twin in the Cambridge lines opened here. Priberam and Infopédia, the European dictionaries opened, print no person at all. The questioner on Ciberdúvidas, identified as Brazilian, says he does not use a. The answer, and Aulete, still print a beside de. This page does not turn that report into a rule that one variety lacks a preposition.
