Voice[Buyer] + complement of the root (Goods, direct object) + Seller in van+NP or bij+NP where a line fills one + Beneficiary in voor+NP where a line fills one, or a bare nominal where the ANS labels the line regionaal + Price in voor+amount where a line fills one

A purchase, on this reading, has a Buyer, the Goods, a Seller when a line fills one, a Beneficiary when a line fills one, and a Price when a line fills one. They are not five equal sisters of kopen. Voice adds the Buyer, the subject. The root’s complement is the Goods, a direct object. Full noun phrases show no case ending. The Woordenboek der Nederlandsche Taal (WNT), article KOOPEN, defines the verb as acquiring something as one’s property in exchange for money or what stands in its place, and the citations fill den wijn, de Baronie van Liesvelt, de brieven. English Wiktionary fills een nieuwe telefoon and een nieuwe auto. Dutch Wiktionary fills twee paarden and twee zakken chips. The Seller is not one preposition. Van Dale (1950) prints van, bij iem. kopen, both with iemand, and does not rank them. The Contrastive Verb Valency Dictionary (CVVD) puts van and bij in one pattern, NP ___ (NP) van/bij NP, and notes van NP only with (NP). The shop names in that block sit in bij: bij de Aldi of de Edah, with no object. bij also takes die veeboeren and Boeing. van takes Novo Nordisk, de commerciële omroep, and hem. The WNT article of the verb prints neither preposition as the seller. The Beneficiary the ANS prints without a regional label is voor+NP: een gouden armband voor zijn vrouw. The same section prints a bare nominal, kocht zijn vrouw een gouden armband, and labels it regionaal. CVVD pattern 5 of Dutch points at the voor pattern. The Price is also voor plus an amount: the WNT says the sum is a noun preceded by voor, formerly usually om. voor is therefore not one role. The drawing is working and revisable. It is not a settled analysis.

What is different from the English gloss. The gloss buy X from Y for Z uses one from for the seller and one for for whatever follows. Cambridge prints the seller in from (from a friend of mine) and the person in for or as the first object of [+ two objects] (He bought his mother some flowers / He bought some flowers for his mother). Dutch prints two seller prepositions, van and bij, and no case ending on either noun. Van Dale lists them together with iemand. The shop names CVVD prints sit in bij. On kaufen, von and bei are both printed and left unranked: vom Gebrauchtwagenhändler beside beim Fleischer. On vesz, the friend of vásárol is ablative -tól/-től and the street vendor of vesz III.2 is adessive -nál/-nél. Dutch van / bij is that split with prepositions. English for in the Cambridge lines opened here is the person. Dutch voor is that person in the ANS, and it is the sum in the WNT. The bare first object of English buy her a gift is standard in Cambridge. The bare nominal beside Dutch goods is the ANS line labeled regionaal.

What the passive shows

worden promotes the goods in CVVD’s De hasj werd gekocht in Marokko and Met de opbrengst werden luxe spullen gekocht. The place, where the first line fills one, is in Marokko. No buyer, no van, and no bij is in those clauses. WNT prints Aan de deur wordt niet gekocht. No goods are in that clause, and no buyer. A passive that names the buyer, and a passive that keeps a seller or a beneficiary, are unprinted. Nothing further is constructed.

The other senses stay off the purchase frame. WNT sense 2 of kopen takes a person as object and a place or a state: iemand op een hofje, zich in een gasthuis koopen. That person is not the beneficiary. Sense 3 is figurative acquiring, including Wijsheyt gekocht van kloecke verstanden. That van is not the seller of goods. The card-game sense and wat koop ik er voor? stay beside the goods frame. afkopen sense 1, freeing someone from a service, stays off the purchase-from-a-seller frame except for the price voor groot geld on the thing. Cambridge’s She'll never buy that story is the English believe sense. It is not given a Dutch clause here. On verkopen the subject is the seller and the buyer is a bare indirect object or aan. That buyer is not the seller of kopen.

Cambridge’s from is the seller. Dutch spells that place as van or bij. The shop names sit in bij. Van Dale does not rank the two. German spells a dealer as von and a butcher as bei, and that page does not rank them. Hungarian spells the friend as ablative -tól/-től and the street vendor as adessive -nál/-nél. Cambridge’s for of a person, and the first object of [+ two objects], are the beneficiary. Dutch spells the unlabeled beneficiary as voor. The sum is the same preposition. The divergence from English buy X from Y for Z is those two splits: seller van versus bij, and voor of a person versus voor of a sum. The divergence from English buy her a gift is the label regionaal on the bare nominal.

On kopen the subject is the buyer. A seller phrase, where a line prints one, is van or bij. A beneficiary phrase is voor, or the bare nominal the ANS labels regionaal. The analogy with English from and for is the added person-phrase. It is not a claim that a beneficiary and a seller are one role, and it is not a claim that voor of a sum is that person.

Notes

Working paper · October 2026 · Dutch micro-entry · Beyond Index 2

Buying in Dutch is not one voor and not one seller preposition. Buyer (Voice, subject), Goods (complement of the root, direct object), Seller in van+NP or bij+NP. Van Dale prints both with iemand and does not rank them. The shop names CVVD prints sit in bij. Beneficiary in voor+NP. A bare nominal is printed in the ANS and labeled regionaal. Price is voor plus an amount. On afkopen the bare person the WNT prints is the seller.

Sense × language: buy · Dutch (kopen). aankopen, inkopen, and afkopen stay on this page where a dictionary prints them. The purchase sense is the page. The hofje sense and the figurative sense stay off the frame. No English buy hub. Geometry neighbors: buy · kaufen, buy · vesz, sell · verkopen. No Index 2 Dutch cell lists this verb. Index 2 Dutch Payment is betalen, overmaken.

Working paper. Dutch micro-entry, the tenth language of buy. Dictionary frames were read on the WNT (kopen, aankopen, inkopen, afkopen), on Van Dale 1950 as the Ensie text prints it, on the ANS, on the CVVD, on English and Dutch Wiktionary, on the ANW, and on woorden.org for aankopen, with Cambridge for English buy.
Constructed examples. Dictionary lines are marked as printed. Every other full clause is marked constructed. The bare person read as a seller of kopen is starred because the printed seller is van or bij.
Arity: several places, not one flat verb. Index 2 does not list kopen. Surface count can name a buyer, the goods, a seller, a beneficiary, and a price. The lexicon does not list those as co-arguments of one flat V. Voice adds the Buyer. The root takes the Goods. van or bij adds a Seller where a line fills one. voor adds a Beneficiary or a Price, according to the line. The bare nominal the ANS labels regionaal adds that beneficiary where that line is the one in view. No telicity claim is made from the participle or from aan-, in-, or af-.
What this page does not do. It does not open an English page of buy. It does not edit the other buy pages. It does not rank van above bij where Van Dale lists them together. The hofje sense stops at the citation.

Hierarchy

Not a flat grid of five sisters, and not one preposition copied from the English gloss. Voice adds the Buyer. The root takes the Goods. van adds the Seller where the line is van hem or van Novo Nordisk. bij adds the shop or the vendor where the line is bij de Aldi or bij die veeboeren. voor of a person adds the Beneficiary. voor of a sum adds the Price. The bare nominal adds the beneficiary only on the line the ANS labels regionaal. The prefixes are morphology. The drawing is working and revisable.

What Dutch changes, against English from, is that two prepositions are printed. Van Dale does not rank them. The shop names sit in bij. German leaves von and bei unranked. Hungarian splits the same contrast into -tól and -nál, with a case ending. What Dutch changes, against English buy her a gift, is that the unlabeled person is voor+NP, and the bare nominal carries the label regionaal. What Dutch changes, against for Z in buy X from Y for Z, is that voor of a sum and voor of a person are both printed, and the seller is neither of them.
