Where this frame diverges from English pay the bill. English pay the bill makes the bill the bare object. English pay someone can make the creditor the bare object. Dutch splits that bare object by the verb. The bill is the bare object of voldoen: Van Dale een rekening voldoen. The debt is the bare object of vereffenen and of aflossen: een schuld. Van Dale’s entry for betalen prints neither the bill nor a person. The gloss is the money, het verschuldigde (geld). The bill as object of betalen is the infinitive in a Taaladvies question, een rekening te betalen. Wiktionary puts the person of betalen under aan. A bare indirect object is unprinted. afrekenen’s payment example is intransitive, afrekenen ober!. met plus a person on that entry is the sport line, not a bill creditor.
The particle follows the verb, not the sense. afrekenen and aflossen separate in a main clause: rekende af, loste af. voldoen does not, though ANW and Wiktionary call it vol plus doen. be- on betalen and ver- on vereffenen do not separate. A subordinate clause uses the joined cell afrekent. No dat-clause of that cell is printed.
