Debtor, Creditor, sum · the adjective skyldig · working claim, revisable
English owe is a lexical verb. Merriam-Webster marks it transitive, and the money line is owes me $5. Cambridge marks I owe Janet $50 as two objects. Swedish does not put that debt on a verb of its own. Svensk ordbok (SO, 2009 webbversion) heads skyldig as adjektiv ~t. Lexin’s Swedish–Swedish entry heads it adj. and lists skyldigt, skyldiga. Svenska Akademiens ordbok (SAOB, 1974) heads SKYLDIG as adj.1. The copula is vara or bli. SO’s money line is hon är skyldig honom 2000 kronor. Lexin’s is Du är skyldig mig en hundralapp! SAOB’s is Jag är skyldig honom 100 kr. The predicate that takes the Creditor and the sum is the adjective.
The Debtor is the nominative subject of the copula. hon in the SO line, Du in the Lexin line, and Jag in the SAOB line are the subject forms. The plural obligation lines agree on the adjective: SO föräldrar är inte skyldiga att ersätta, Lexin alla arbetstagare är skyldiga att lämna självdeklaration. skyldiga is the plural. SO’s ~t and Lexin’s skyldigt are the neuter cell of that adjective. No neuter debt clause is printed in the articles opened here.
The two internal arguments are written on the adjective, not on a verb. SO’s money formula is skyldig (ngn) ngt (för ngt). Lexin’s construction is ngn är skyldig ngn ngt. The first ngn of the Lexin line is the Debtor, the subject of är. The second ngn is the Creditor. ngt is the sum. SAOB sense 2a prints the same stack as vara l. bli skyldig (ngn, förr äv. till ngn, så l. så mycket). The current money examples have no till on the Creditor. till ngn is marked förr äv., an older variant, and the citation for that till is not a modern kronor line.
The Creditor is a bare indirect object. The printed pronouns are object forms, not the subject forms of the same persons. SO has honom beside the subject hon, and dig in jag är skyldig dig ett stort tack. Lexin has mig beside the subject Du. SAOB has honom beside the subject Jag. A noun in that slot has no preposition and no case ending. SAOB prints the bare noun phrase Han är skyldig Gud och hela världen. That line has a Creditor and no sum. A full-noun Creditor beside a kronor sum is unprinted. It is not filed. The order in the money lines is Creditor then sum: honom 2000 kronor, mig en hundralapp, honom 100 kr.
The sum is a bare object. 2000 kronor, en hundralapp, and 100 kr have no preposition. SAOB also prints a quantity with no counted noun and no Creditor: Han är skyldig mycket. The optional för is not the Creditor. SO’s formula writes (för ngt), and the line is hur mycket blir jag skyldig för det här? SAOB glosses Vad är, blir jag skyldig för detta? as what this costs. The goods sit in för. The Creditor is absent from those two lines. Jag är skyldig honom tusen kronor reuses SAOB’s Jag är skyldig honom and SO’s honom plus a kronor sum. The numeral tusen is not the printed one. SO prints 2000. SAOB prints 100 kr. The stack is constructed. It is not one filed sentence.
stå i skuld till names the Creditor in a till-phrase and does not print a sum. SO’s syntactic example, under the money sense of the noun skuld, is stå i skuld till banken. Lexin’s expression is står i skuld till någon, glossed är skyldig någon något (ofta pengar). The gloss points at the adjective’s two complements. The expression itself prints only till någon. The noun’s valency en skuld (till ngn/ngt) (på BELOPP) is printed later, in SO’s figurative cycle of skuld, on the noun, with på for an amount. That på is not a bare object of stå. SAOB’s paraphrase of the adjective line is older and uses other prepositions: Jag är skyldig honom 100 kr, jag står i skuld hos honom för 100 kr. hos and för are not the till of the SO example, and the sum there is a för-phrase, not a bare object.
The credit sense, English owe X to Y, is ha att tacka (ngn) för. SO’s verb tacka prints hon hade yogan att tacka för sitt lugn i pressande situationer, and the formula is tacka (ngn/ngt) (för ngt/SATS). The source is the object of tacka. In the printed line that object is yogan, a thing. The theme is the för-phrase, sitt lugn. The formula’s ngn is the person slot. No person is printed inside hade … att tacka. SAOB’s sense 4 of skylla glosses the credit reading as ha (ngn l. ngt) att tacka för (ngt). The same adjective can keep the money frame and change the sum to thanks. SO, still under the debt sense, marked figurative: jag är skyldig dig ett stort tack. dig is the Creditor. ett stort tack is the bare object. That is not the för-phrase of tacka.
Obligation is vara skyldig att plus an infinitive, and it prints no Creditor and no sum. SO sense 3, förpliktad, formula skyldig att+V: föräldrar är inte skyldiga att ersätta de skador som deras barn vållar. Lexin sense 3, tvungen, förpliktad, formula ngn är skyldig att+VERB: alla arbetstagare är skyldiga att lämna självdeklaration. SAOB sense 1a is the same predicative: vara, äv. bliva skyldig (att) göra ngt.
The same adjective means guilty, and the complement is different. Lexin sense 2, som har skulden till ett brott eller fel, formula ngn är skyldig (till ngt), example domstolen fann honom skyldig till mord. SO sense 1, som har skuld till ngt, vanligen ett brott el. ett fel, formula skyldig (till ngt/att+V/SATS): busschauffören var ensam skyldig till olyckan, han gjorde sig skyldig till skattebrott. The debtor reading takes a bare Creditor and a bare sum. The guilty reading takes till and the offence. SO’s sense-1 formula also writes att+V/SATS beside till ngt. The att-infinitive example printed in the article is the obligation line under sense 3. Lexin puts att+VERB on sense 3 only.
skulda is not a modern headword for this debt. SAOB lists förr äv. SKULDA among the older forms of the verb skylla v.2, beside skylda and skulla. The etymology prints fornsvenska skulda. The money sense of that verb is sense 3, marked numera nästan bl. i vissa trakter, bygdemålsfärgat, and the printed form is skyller, not skulda: att jag tolf tusen skyller, and skyller oss ett belopp av kr. 259: 32. Lexin’s Swedish–Swedish service corrects the query skulda to the noun skuld and prints no verb. A current three-place verb skulda is not filed.
