tartozik is intransitive on the money reading. A magyar nyelv értelmező szótára heads the article I. tárgyatlan ige. The Magyar értelmező kéziszótár heads it I. tn ige. English Wiktionary glosses sense 3 “to owe someone (-nak/-nek) something (-val/-vel)” and marks the verb intransitive. The definite-conjugation cells say “intransitive verb, definite forms are not used.” The money government is Tartozik vkinek vmivel, glossed adósa neki. The kéziszótár’s sense 3 is ~ik vkinek vmivel: fizetnie kell neki vmit.
The Debtor is the nominative subject. Czuczor–Fogarasi prints Péter ezer forinttal tartozik Pálnak. Péter has no case suffix. The folk line in the Értelmező article spells the pronoun: Tartozok én a csárdába. én is nominative. The ordinary prose line does not spell it. Tíz forinttal tartozom neki has the person on tartozom. Rounds, Hungarian: An Essential Grammar, §6: the nominative marks the subject. §7.1: a nominative pronoun is omitted unless it is emphasized. tartozom is the indefinite first person. The Wiktionary cell also lists tartozok. No definite first person is in use.
The Creditor is dative -nak/-nek, not a bare object. The filled persons are neki in Tíz forinttal tartozom neki, neked in Milyen könyvvel tartozom még neked?, a szomszédasszonynak in Két tojással tartozott a szomszédasszonynak, Pálnak in the Czuczor line, and a szüleinek in Wiktionary’s Sok pénzzel tartozik a szüleinek. neki and neked are the dative pronouns. -nak and -nek are the noun endings. Rounds §6.4.2.1: many verbs take a dative complement. A bare noun in the English object slot is unprinted. Czuczor’s Én senkinek se tartozom has the dative and no sum.
The sum, or the thing owed, is instrumental -val/-vel. Tíz forinttal tartozom neki. Két tojással tartozott a szomszédasszonynak. Milyen könyvvel tartozom még neked? Sok pénzzel tartozik a szüleinek. Péter ezer forinttal tartozik Pálnak. Rounds §6.4.1: the initial v of -val/-vel assimilates to the stem-final consonant. forint plus -val is forinttal. tojás plus -val is tojással. The numeral itself has no suffix. tíz, két, and ezer are bare. The case sits on the noun, and that noun is singular. Rounds §5.4.1.1: the singular is used after numbers. Tartozom neked ezer forinttal stacks the printed tartozom, the printed neked, and Czuczor’s ezer forinttal. The stack is constructed. It is not one filed sentence.
The bare-quantity cloth is the same instrumental with no counted noun. Czuczor: Sokkal tartozik a kalmárnak. sokkal is sok plus -val. The Értelmező question is Mivel tartozom (érte)?, glossed mennyibe kerül?, mennyit kell fizetnem? The kéziszótár prints the same question, Mivel tartozom (érte)?: mennyit kell fizetnem? mivel is the instrumental of mi. The question word of an accusative object would be mit. That form is not the government of this verb. The parenthetical érte is causal-final -ért, the reason. The schema of the moral sense also prints vmiért. It is not the sum.
The sum is accusative-less. No money line opened here puts -t on the forints, the eggs, the book, or the money. The verb has no definite conjugation to agree with an accusative object. ezer forintot beside tartozik is unprinted. It is not filed. English X owes Y Z puts Z in one bare object, owes me $5, and Y in a bare object or in to, owes £3 000 to her father. Hungarian puts Y in the dative and Z in the instrumental. The two English objects are not two Hungarian objects.
The moral reading uses the same vkinek vmivel and the dictionaries number it apart from the debt. Értelmező sense 3a: Vmivel tartozik vkinek, vminek: jogilag v. erkölcsileg kötelezve van vmire, vki v. vmi iránt. The fillers are Elszámolással, köszönettel, magyarázattal tartozik vkinek vmiért and vkinek hűséggel tartozik. The kéziszótár’s bar under sense 3 is Vmivel ~ik vkinek, vminek: kötelezve van vmire iránta, and the line is Hálával ~ik neki. Wiktionary’s second owe example is this reading: Tartozik neked egy magyarázattal. magyarázattal is instrumental. neked is dative. The thing is not a sum of money. A third reading is the infinitive. Értelmező sense 3, hivatalos: Tartozik vmit megtenni. The kéziszótár’s sense 4 is the same: ~ik vmit megtenni: köteles megtenni. A szállásadó tartozik lakóit bejelenteni. lakóit is the accusative of bejelenteni. It is not a sum of tartozik. Nyolc napon belül tartozik fizetni prints no sum and no creditor.
adós is the possessive-predicate frame. The debtor is the creditor’s debtor. Értelmező: Sokkal vagyok neki adósa. vagyok is the first person, the debtor, nominative and unspelled. adósa is adós plus the third-person possessive. neki is the dative possessor, the creditor. sokkal is the bare instrumental quantity. Adósod vagyok egy látogatással puts the creditor in the second-person possessive -od. Máig is adósom puts the creditor in the first-person possessive -om: the other person is the speaker’s debtor. The kéziszótár prints sokkal vagyok az ~a, the possessed form with the article. Rounds chapter 8: possession is a suffix on the noun. §6.4.2.1.5: the dative may mark the possessor. A money line can lack the possessive: Száz Ft-tal adós, Adós egy kiló cukorral, Adós maradt a kamattal. The sum is still instrumental. Wiktionary lists the noun’s possessive cell adósa and glosses the noun “debtor.”
köszönhet vkinek vmit is the thanks contrast, and it is transitive. The kéziszótár’s sense 2 of köszön is ~het vkinek v. vminek vmit: hálával tartozik neki érte, and the line is Neki ~heti az életét. The Értelmező sub-entry is the same government: Köszönhet vkinek v. vminek vmit. Neki köszönheti életét. Karinthy: A sakkirodalom négy szakkönyvet köszönhet neki. életét and négy szakkönyvet are accusative. neki is dative, the source. köszönheti is the definite conjugation. The kéziszótár’s paraphrase hálával tartozik is the instrumental moral cloth of tartozik. The köszönhet clause itself has an accusative thing. English I owed the surgeon my life is two bare objects. English I owe my success to my teachers puts the cause in to. Hungarian prints the thing as accusative and the person as dative. It does not print the thing as instrumental on this verb.
Two other governments of tartozik are not this debt. Wiktionary sense 1 is “to belong,” with allative -hoz/-hez/-höz: Kihez tartozik ez a kutya? The kéziszótár’s sense 1 is the same allative and illative family, vmihez, vmi közé, vhova. Sense 2 is vkire, vmire, the concern reading, and Wiktionary prints A magánügyem nem tartozik másra, sublative -ra. The kéziszótár’s part II is the bookkeeping label Tartozik oldal v. rovat. It is not a clause with a creditor and a sum.
