An exchange, on this reading, has someone who gives a thing and receives another, and a partner when a line names one. The Magyar értelmező kéziszótár (ÉKsz) defines cserél as giving or getting another thing as the counter-value of an object or goods: Vmely tárgyért, áruért ellenértékként más tárgyat ad, kap, with the schema Vmiért v. vmin ~ vmit. A magyar nyelv értelmező szótára (ÉrtSz) prints the same schema, Vmiért v. vmin cserél vmit, and fills the first slot with causal-final Zsírért ruhát cserél. English Wiktionary’s transitive gloss of cserél is change, exchange, swap, or replace, “with something: -ra/-re,” and its example is Régi autóját újra cserélte, glossed as replacing the old car with a new one. újra in that line is the sublative of új.
Where the Hungarian frame diverges from English exchange X for Y with Z. The English stub, and the Cambridge patterns the Polish page cites, keep for on the thing received and with on the partner. Hungarian does not give the received thing one marker, and it does not keep the partner’s case for the partner alone.
Where the articles print sublative -ra/-re, that phrase is a local goal case. Wiktionary’s entry for -ra calls the Hungarian suffix a sublative “(of place) onto,” and the case table on that page lists it beside the illative -ba/-be and the allative, and lists the causal-final -ért, the instrumental -val/-vel, and the translative -vá/-vé as other rows. Finnish vaihtaa puts the received thing in the illative, which that page, citing Iso suomen kielioppi §1235, calls a tulosija, a goal case. Hungarian sublative is that kind of goal-like surface case. It is not English for, and it is not a benefactive or a price marker.
The same slot is not always sublative. ÉrtSz and ÉKsz also print causal-final -ért on bare cserél, and the filled barter lines read there are -ért: Zsírért ruhát cserél, búzáért cserél gyümölcsöt, Használt ruhákért szőnyeget cserélt. Wiktionary’s elcserél sense 1 is trade “(for something: -ért or -ra/-re).” That -ért is the price and reason case vesz prints (ruháért, vmiért). A counter-Theme in -ért does not leave the English for-marker. Finnish does not print a causal-final alternative on the counter-Theme of vaihtaa.
ÉKsz’s kicserél prints the new thing two ways on one line: egy újjal, instrumental, or újra, sublative. The instrumental is therefore not reserved for the partner. The partner, where a line fills one, is also instrumental -val/-vel: ÉrtSz vkivel, Arany Toldi Györggyel lakhelyet cserélünk. English with is only the partner. Gárdonyi’s person is a third case: A sast egy pajtásomtól cseréltem kalamárisért, accusative Theme, ablative person, causal-final counter-Theme. The ablative is not the instrumental partner.
The superessive in the schema, ÉrtSz and ÉKsz vmin, is named. No filled superessive noun was read on these barter lines.
The Theme is accusative -t. ÉKsz marks cserél ts and tn. ÉrtSz fills ruhát, gyümölcsöt, szőnyeget, a sast, bélyeget, ceruzát, lakhelyet, szerepet, térfelet. Wiktionary fills autóját, az órámat, a kocsinkat, a kabátomat. A second bare accusative for the thing received is not in these lines.
Preverbs are sense contrasts, and the articles print a split. Wiktionary’s kicserél (ki- + cserél) sense 1 is replace, “with something -ra/-re”: Kicseréltem az órámat egy újabb modellre. Sense 2 is exchange mutually. The article prints nem cserél ki and ki is cserél. Wiktionary’s elcserél sense 1 is trade, for -ért or -ra/-re: Elcseréltük a kocsinkat egy másikra. Sense 2 is mix up, synonym összecserél: A ruhatáros elcserélte a kabátomat valakiével, and el ne cseréljem. The split printed there is nem cserél el or el is cserél. ÉKsz’s elcserél sense 1 is Cserébe odaad, ~ vmit vmiért, and sense 2 is mix up, ~ték a kalapjukat. ÉKsz’s becserél sense 1 gives the government Vmit ~ vmire and defines it as handing in or taking in a valuable in exchange, and as replacing with a suitable one (Megfelelőre kicserél). The definition’s vmiért cserébe and the government vmire are both in that article. This page does not rank them as one case. Sense 2 of becserél is the sports line, a coach or a captain sending on a substitute. English Wiktionary has no becserél article, so no split line for be- is taken from there. ÉrtSz ends the cserél article with a bare list, átcserél, becserél, elcserél, felcserél, kicserél, lecserél, megcserél, összecserél, visszacserél, without glosses. The glosses above are the separate articles.
Reciprocal cserélnek, and helyet. ÉrtSz sense 1b is place, role, and job, and the angle-bracket label names Helyet, helyzetet, munkakört. The filled place nouns read there are lakhelyet and térfelet: Arany Toldi Györggyel lakhelyet cserélünk, and A második félidőben a csapatok térfelet cserélnek. szerepet cserélnek is in the same sense, and Mikszáth prints cseréltünk szerepet. ÉKsz prints szerepet ~nek and vmi gazdát ~. Cseréljünk ceruzát is first-person plural with an accusative and no partner. A clause helyet cserélnek is constructed below from the bracket’s helyet and from térfelet cserélnek. The bracket is not that clause.
vált is the money verb. Translative -vá/-vé is change-into, on other verbs. ÉKsz’s vált sense of banknotes and coins is exchanging them for other denominations of the same value, and the result is sublative címletekre. ÉrtSz prints Aprópénzre vált vmit and egy százast kell váltanom. Wiktionary prints Dollárt váltottak euróra, accusative dollars and sublative euros. The infinitive of that verb is váltani. The articles do not print a clause pénzt vált. Wiktionary’s translative -vá is “into / becoming.” Its examples are not on cserél: Lót felesége sóvá változott, A varázsgyűrű kutyává változtatja az embert, Héra medvévé változtatta Kallisztót, Az idő hűvössé vált. Change-into is that case on válik, változik, and változtat. It is unprinted as the counter-Theme of cserél. Wiktionary also lists vált as a past form of válik, and an intransitive become sense of vált that takes -ra/-re. Those are not the money frame, and they are not a translative on cserél.
