An exchange, on this reading, has someone who gives a thing and receives another, and a partner when a line names one. The seventh edition of 现代汉语词典 defines 交换 as 双方各拿出自己的给对方;互换 and fills 交换纪念品, 交换意见, and 两队交换场地. Sense 2 is 以商品换商品;买卖商品, with no example. The same edition defines 换 sense 1 as 给人东西同时从他那里取得别的东西 and fills only the compounds 交换 and 调换. Sense 2 is 变换;更换, with 换车, 换人, and 换衣服. Sense 3 is the single word 兑换. The two-thing clause is on the usage article, not in that seventh-edition entry.
Where this frame diverges from the English gloss exchange X for Y with Z. Cambridge’s learner entry, as the Portuguese and German pages cite it, prints exchange something for something: I exchanged those trousers for a larger size. The bare object is the thing given. For is the thing received. The business entry prints exchange sth with sb as a separate pattern. The seventh edition’s 交换 prints neither a for-phrase nor a with-phrase. 换 prints both things, and it prints them in the other order. The usage article’s barter sense gives 我用大米换过鸡蛋. 用 is on 大米. 鸡蛋 is the bare object. The same article’s directional line is 他用一头牛换来一匹马: 用 is on the cow, and 来 brings in the horse. The seventh edition’s 兑换 defines the verb as 用一种货币换另一种货币 and fills 用美圆兑换人民币. 用 is on the currency used. 人民币 is the bare object, the other currency. English exchange X for Y makes X the bare object and the given thing. 用 X 换 Y makes X the thing given and Y the bare object. The partner, where a line prints one, stands before the verb: 和我 in 你的玩具可以和我换着玩儿吗, 跟他 in 我跟他换得着吗. 汉典’s basic example prints 与你交换位置. A 同 phrase is unprinted in the articles opened. A clause that stacks the partner, 用, and the bare object is unprinted. Portuguese por and com, Spanish por and con, French contre and avec, German gegen plus accusative and mit plus dative, Italian con for both seats, and Russian на plus accusative against с plus instrumental keep the received thing and the partner on two markers. The Japanese page keeps both seats on one particle, in different clauses.
成 marks the new item on 换成. The seventh edition’s 兑换 examples do not print it. The usage article’s currency sense of 换 prints 把一种货币换成另一种货币. 把 is the currency one starts with. 成 is the currency one ends with. The note under 换开 prints the schema 把整钱换成零钱 and the clause 您能帮我把这张100元钱换开吗. The example’s verb is 换开. 换成 is the schema line. CC-CEDICT, as MDBG prints it, glosses the headword 换成 as “to exchange (sth) for (sth else) / to replace with / to convert into” and prints no clause. The seventh edition of 兑换 prints 兑换现金 and 用美圆兑换人民币. 成 is absent there. 两岸通用词典, as the same character page prints it, puts 換成 in the definition prose, 將有價證券換成現金 and 將一種貨幣換成另一種貨幣, and the examples are 兌換券, 兌換獎金, and 兌換歐元. Those examples fill one object and leave 成 out of the example string.
调换 and 掉换 are one article pair. 互换 and 交流 print one object. The seventh edition heads 掉换 with 彼此互换, examples 掉换位置 and 咱们俩掉换一下,你上午值班,我下午值班, and with 更换, examples 掉换领导班子 and 这根木料太细,掉换一根粗的. The note is 也作调换. The 调换 article is 同“掉换”. No 跟, 和, 与, or 同 is in those examples.
