intercambiar · Agent (subject) + Theme given (direct object) + counter-Theme (por + DP)

Partner: con + DP · DPD, when the subject names one participant · the DLE articles of intercambiar, canjear, and cambiar do not print con

reciprocal se · DPD · the subject names both parties · the Theme stays a direct object · se intercambiaron · Nos intercambiamos · an infinitive heading intercambiarse and a present se intercambian are unprinted

cambiar · DLE sense 3 · direct object + por + the received thing · sense 1 · de + a bare noun · no received DP

An exchange, on this reading, has someone who gives a thing and receives another. The one who exchanges is the subject, when a clause names one. The thing given is the direct object. The thing received is por plus a DP. The DLE’s article for intercambiar is one transitive sense and no clause: Hacer cambio recíproco de una cosa o persona por otra u otras. por otra u otras sits inside that definition. The Diccionario del estudiante prints the same frame and fills it: La guerrilla pretende intercambiar al rehén por guerrilleros presos. A second line on that entry has a direct object and no por, no con, and no se: En la reunión intercambiamos impresiones. The DPD’s por line is Britton, as the entry prints it: riquezas que intercambiaba por ropa y comestibles.

The other person is con plus a DP, and only on the DPD line that makes one participant the subject. The entry says the complement in con names the person, or the complement in por names what is obtained. The o is the entry’s. The filled lines are separate: intercambió opiniones con personalidades mexicanas, and the Britton por line. No DLE article opened here prints con on intercambiar, on canjear, or on cambiar.

Where this frame diverges from the English gloss exchange X for Y with Z, from French échanger, and from German tauschen. Cambridge’s learner entry prints exchange something for something as its own pattern: I exchanged those trousers for a larger size. The business entry prints exchange sth with sb as a separate pattern. No Cambridge line opened on the German page stacks with and for in one clause. Spanish prints the received thing in por. That preposition is the English for of the gloss, and it is not French contre and not German gegen. The partner, where the DPD prints one, is con. French marks that person with avec. German marks that person with mit plus dative. The DPD’s o presents con and por as alternatives. A Spanish clause that names the direct object, con, and por together is unprinted, as a French clause with avec and contre together is unprinted, and as a German clause with mit and gegen together is unprinted.

The split inside cambiar. DLE sense 1 is Dejar una cosa o situación para tomar otra, labelled transitive and also intransitive and pronominal, and the printed complements are de plus a bare noun: Cambiar de nombre, lugar, destino, oficio, vestido, opinión, gusto, costumbre. That line names no received DP. Sense 3 is Dar o tomar algo por otra cosa que se considera del mismo o análogo valor, and the example is Cambiar pesos por euros. The direct object and por plus the received thing are that sense. French échanger and German tauschen do not print this bare-noun switch. Their received-thing prepositions are contre and gegen.

Places · who wears which marking

The goods lines do not stack every marking in one clause. The direct object is the thing given. por plus a DP is the thing received. con plus a DP is the other person on the DPD line that has one participant as subject. de plus a bare noun, on DLE cambiar sense 1, is a switch with no received DP. canjear is another head. Its nouns are not copied back onto every line of intercambiar.

Each row lines up one English slot with a Spanish slot. The alignment type says what happens to the slot: = (same object status), or shift (English for or with against the Spanish preposition the line prints, and against French contre or avec and German gegen or mit where that cloth is the comparison). Printed lines come first. Every other sentence is constructed, modelled on a printed line. They show the working alignment. They are not frequency, and not a bilingual corpus.

The drawing gives the Agent to the subject, the thing given to the direct object, the partner to con plus a DP where the DPD prints it, and the thing received to por plus a DP.
