обменять / менять / поменять · Agent (subject) + Theme (accusative) + counter-Theme (на + accusative)
Rosenthal’s government of обменять is что на что · Ushakov’s government of менять sense 1 is the same string · no person in с is in that government
обменяться / меняться · reciprocal -ся · Theme in the bare instrumental · partner с + instrumental · Rosenthal чем с кем
разменять · a large note as accusative · the smaller money in на + accusative where Kuznetsov fills на · Kuznetsov also prints instrumental мелочью
An exchange, on this reading, has someone who gives a thing and receives another. The one who exchanges is the subject, when a clause names one. On the transitive verbs the thing given is accusative. Ozhegov and Shvedova print О. квартиру на дачу under обменять, government кого-что. Kuznetsov prints О. вещи на продовольствие and Обменяли теннисные мячи на старую ракетку. The thing received is на plus accusative: дачу, продовольствие, ракетку. Rosenthal’s Управление в русском языке states the government as что на что and fills Fadeev, обменять кое-какие вещи на хлеб. Ushakov’s менять states что на что and does not fill the на-phrase. Ushakov’s обменять fills Обменять книгу and Обменять собаку, accusatives, with no на.
Where this frame diverges from the English gloss exchange X for Y with Z. Cambridge’s learner entry, as the Portuguese and German pages cite it, prints exchange something for something: I exchanged those trousers for a larger size. The business entry prints exchange sth with sb as a separate pattern. Russian marks the received thing with на plus accusative. That is the preposition of Ozhegov and Shvedova’s на дачу, Kuznetsov’s на продовольствие and на резинку, and Rosenthal’s на хлеб. English for, Portuguese por, Spanish por, French contre, and German gegen plus accusative are the received-thing markers on the other pages. Italian marks that place with con. The articles opened here do not print за as the received thing. за plus accusative is the price on купить and продать.
The partner с plus instrumental is printed on the reciprocal, and Rosenthal’s transitive government has no с кем. Rosenthal’s government of обменяться is чем с кем. The example is Chekhov, Клещев обменялся калошами с тайным советником Лирмансом. калошами is instrumental, the Theme. с тайным советником Лирмансом is the partner. Ozhegov and Shvedova’s government of меняться sense 1 is кем-чем с кем, and the perfective they name for that sense is поменяться. Ushakov prints the stack in one line: Меняться с кем-нибудь квартирами, government чем с кем-чем. A transitive обменять с кем, a person beside the accusative and the на-phrase, is unprinted in Ozhegov and Shvedova, Kuznetsov, Ushakov, the Small Academic Dictionary, and Rosenthal.
The reciprocal -ся puts the exchanged thing in the bare instrumental. Ozhegov and Shvedova, sense 1: кем-чем, О. сувенирами. Sense 2, marked figurative: О. взглядами, О. мнениями. Ushakov: Обменяться мнениями, Обменяться взглядами. Kuznetsov: О. книгами, фотографиями and Случайно обменялись зонтиками. The instrumental is the Theme. There is no accusative of that thing in these lines, and no на.
Places · who wears which marking
The transitive lines and the -ся lines do not put every marking in one clause. The accusative is the thing given. на plus accusative is the thing received, where a line prints на. с plus instrumental is the partner on обменяться and меняться. The same -ся verbs put the Theme in the instrumental. разменять takes the large note as accusative. Kuznetsov fills the smaller money with на or with a bare instrumental. Those two money markings are both in one sense of that entry. They are not copied back onto обменять квартиру на дачу.

Marking map. On обменять, менять, and поменять, read the accusative as the thing given and на plus accusative as the thing received. On обменяться, меняться, and поменяться, read the bare instrumental as the Theme and с plus instrumental as the partner, in the lines that print с. On разменять, read the accusative as the large note. Read на медные as the smaller money. Read мелочью as the smaller money in the instrumental, the line that has no на.
- Accusative of the Theme. Ozhegov and Shvedova: квартиру. Kuznetsov: квартиру, вещи, теннисные мячи, карандаш, шкурки, телевизор, книги. Ushakov: книгу, собаку. Fadeev: кое-какие вещи. The government strings are кого-что and что на что. A line can name only the accusative. The successful-flat line, the book, the dog, and Kuznetsov’s П. книги have no на.
- на plus accusative, the counter-Theme. The filled phrases are на дачу, на продовольствие, на старую ракетку, на хлеб, на резинку, на охотничьи принадлежности, на стиральную машину, на мыло. Rosenthal’s label is что на что. Ushakov’s label on менять is что на что, with no filled clause. English for, Portuguese por, Spanish por, French contre, and German gegen plus accusative are the received-thing markings on the other pages. Italian marks that place with con.
- с plus instrumental, the partner, on -ся. Rosenthal: чем с кем, Chekhov and Turgenev. The Small Academic Dictionary: Veresaev с Машею, and the same Chekhov line. Ozhegov and Shvedova: с соседями, с соседом, and the government кем-чем с кем. Ushakov: с кем-нибудь, government чем с кем-чем. The чем after с in Ushakov’s label is wider than Ozhegov and Shvedova’s с кем. The filled example is a person. French avec, German mit plus dative, Portuguese com, Spanish con, Italian con, and English with are the partner markings on the sibling pages.
- Transitive обменять does not print a person in с. Rosenthal’s transitive government is что на что only. Ozhegov and Shvedova, Kuznetsov, and Ushakov print no с кем on обменять, менять, or поменять. Ostrovsky’s обменять с придачею is с plus instrumental of an addition. The Small Academic Dictionary does not call придачею the other person. A clause that stacks accusative, на plus accusative, and с plus a person is unprinted.
- Instrumental Theme of -ся. сувенирами, взглядами, мнениями, книгами, фотографиями, калошами, зонтиками, квартирами, платьями, взглядом, приветствиями. Ozhegov and Shvedova mark взглядами and мнениями as the figurative sense and gloss them as looking at one another and as talking. Ushakov files the same two nouns as the bookish figurative sense. The housing lines обменялся с соседями and м. с соседом name the partner and leave the instrumental Theme out.
- Plural verb and comitative с. Kuznetsov’s обменялись зонтиками is a plural verb with an instrumental Theme and no с. Ozhegov and Shvedova’s обменялся с соседями is singular, with с, and with no instrumental Theme. Veresaev is singular Я, with both с Машею and фотографиями. Chekhov stacks калошами and с Лирмансом and does not print a plural subject. Russian Wiktionary, secondary, prints overt plurals: Dovlatov Мы обменялись документами, and Bulgakov Шедшие обменялись с водопроводчиками выразительным взглядом.
- поменяться с кем чем is the government of меняться, and the perfective article does not fill both slots. Ozhegov and Shvedova: меняться sense 1, кем-чем с кем, perfective поменяться. The example м. книгами fills the instrumental only. Sense 4 fills с соседом and is the housing reading. Ushakov fills both slots on the imperfective: Меняться с кем-нибудь квартирами. Kuznetsov’s поменяться prints П. платьями and П. взглядом and prints no с. The same dictionary’s обменяться glosses the accidental reading as поменяться с кем-л. вещами. That string is in the definition. The examples under it, О. книгами and обменялись зонтиками, do not fill с. No article opened here prints finite поменяться with both с and an instrumental Theme.
- разменять, the note, and the two markings of the smaller money. Ozhegov and Shvedova’s gloss is на более мелкие, and the example is Р. сто рублей. Kuznetsov fills Р. рубль на медные, Р. на серебро, на рубли, and Р. мелочью. Ushakov fills Разменять деньги and Разменять сто рублей, and the gloss says на что-нибудь более мелкое. мелочью is instrumental. It is the same sense as на медные in that entry, and it is a different marking. A string деньги на мелкие купюры is unprinted in these articles.
- на plus accusative is not the price of купить in the preposition article opened here. Kuznetsov’s entry for the preposition на prints Поменять шило на мыло in the sense of what an action is directed at, and prints Тратить деньги на кого-, что-л. The same article does not print на as the price of a purchase. On купить and продать the price those pages record is за plus accusative. This page does not add a purchase-price reading of на.
- Off the exchange frame, in the same articles. Ozhegov and Shvedova’s менять sense 3 is making something different: м. вкусы, М. мнения, accusative, with no на. That accusative мнения is not the instrumental мнениями of обменяться. Kuznetsov’s М. часового на посту is replacement of a sentry. на посту is prepositional, a place, and is not the counter-Theme accusative. Ozhegov and Shvedova’s Разменял шестой десяток and Р. талант на мелочи are marked figurative. Kuznetsov’s Р. коней and Р. ферзей are the chess sense. Kuznetsov’s поменяться senses 2 and 3 are a change of rules and of the weather. None of these lines is the goods frame of квартиру на дачу.
Examples
Argument difference. English exchange X for Y marks the received thing with for. English exchange X with Z marks the other person with with. Cambridge does not print those two in one clause. Russian marks the received thing with на plus accusative on обменять, менять, and поменять. Russian marks the other person with с plus instrumental on обменяться and меняться, and in that clause the thing exchanged is instrumental. Rosenthal’s transitive government is что на что. Rosenthal’s reciprocal government is чем с кем. разменять takes the large note as accusative. Kuznetsov marks the smaller money with на plus accusative and, in another line of the same sense, with instrumental мелочью. Portuguese por and com, Spanish por and con, French contre and avec, and German gegen and mit keep the received thing and the partner apart on two prepositions of one verb. Russian keeps them on two verb shapes.
