wymienić / wymieniać · Agent (nominative) + Theme (accusative CO) + partner (z + instrumental, z KIM) + counter-Theme (na + accusative, na CO)

WSJP government, goods sense: Rz osobowy + wymienić + CO + (z KIM) + (na CO) · the same string on imperfective wymieniać · parentheses are the dictionary’s optional slots

wymienić się · partner z + instrumental · the traded thing in the bare instrumental (CZYM) · schema (z KIM) + CZYM · a second schema is (z KIM) + na CO · plural subject Rzpl

zamienić · KOGO/CO + (na KOGO/CO) · transform sense w KOGO/CO | na KOGO/CO · zamienić się miejscami · rozmienić · CO + (na CO)

An exchange, on this reading, has someone who gives a thing and receives another, and a partner when a line names one. WSJP’s goods sense of wymienić, labeled coś z kimś na coś, defines the verb as giving something to someone and taking something else in return. The syntax string is CO + (z KIM) + (na CO). The accusative is the thing given. na plus accusative is the thing received. z plus instrumental is the partner. The imperfective article prints the same three slots. PWN’s gloss is dać komuś coś w zamian za coś innego. The komuś in that gloss is inside the definition of giving. It is not a printed dative frame of wymienić.

Where the best translation diverges from English exchange. Cambridge’s learner entry, as the Portuguese and Russian pages cite it, prints exchange something for something: I exchanged those trousers for a larger size. The business entry prints exchange sth with sb as a separate pattern. English exchange X for Y with Z stacks those two patterns. Polish marks the received thing with na plus accusative, the same job as English for, and marks the partner with z plus instrumental, the same job as English with. Russian обменять marks the received thing with на plus accusative. Rosenthal’s transitive government there is что на что, with no person in с. WSJP’s transitive string does print the partner and the na-phrase together, both optional. The citations opened here fill the slots apart: na inną żywność has no z, and z nim akcje has no na. A clause that fills accusative, na, and z of a person is the schema, not one citation. Under się the given thing leaves the accusative and stands in the bare instrumental.

na plus accusative is the received thing. WSJP: chcieli ją wymienić na inną żywność lub na inny potrzebny przedmiot. ją is the accusative Theme. na inną żywność and na inny potrzebny przedmiot are na plus accusative. The imperfective citation is Wymieniam skóry na żywność, and wymieniano sól na złoto. That na is the counter-Theme, like English for and like Russian на on обменять. One citation uses a different marker for the thing received: wymienili dwóch serbskich zakładników w zamian za siedmiu Albańczyków. w zamian za is not na plus accusative. The partner line is Agora mogłaby wymienić z nim akcje. z nim is z plus instrumental. akcje is accusative. There is no na in that clause.

wymienić się drops the Theme from the accusative to the bare instrumental. WSJP’s head wymienić się, sense wizytówkami, defines it as giving something to one another and taking something else in return. The syntax is (z KIM) + CZYM, and also (z KIM) + na CO, and a plural subject with no further phrase. The collocations are wymienić się adresami, numerami (telefonów), wizytówkami, znaczkami. adresami, wizytówkami, and znaczkami are instrumental. The citations wymienić się monetami, pocztówkami and wymienili się koszulkami are the same case, with no accusative of the thing. wymieni się z BGK powierzchnią stacks z plus instrumental and the instrumental Theme. The imperfective goods article prints mieć czym się wymieniać z innymi: czym is instrumental, and z innymi is the partner. The transitive collocation in that same article is wymieniać znaczki, accusative. The second się schema, (z KIM) + na CO, keeps na plus accusative and does not print an instrumental Theme. The citation is nie wymieni się na byle co. The drop from accusative to instrumental is the CZYM pattern, not that na-line.

Places · who wears which marking

The accusative is the thing given, on wymienić and wymieniać without się. na plus accusative is the thing received, where a line prints na. z plus instrumental is the partner. On wymienić się the thing traded is bare instrumental, and the partner is still z plus instrumental. A plural subject can carry the instrumental alone. zamienić shares na plus accusative and also prints w plus accusative in the sense of turning something into something else. rozmienić takes the note as accusative and the smaller money as na plus accusative.

EN ⇄ PL valency strip

Each row lines up one English slot with a Polish slot. The alignment type says what happens to the slot: = (same object status), or shift (English for or with against na plus accusative or z plus instrumental, and against the accusative-to-instrumental change under się). Printed lines come first. Every other sentence is constructed, modelled on a printed line. They show the working alignment. They are not frequency, and not a bilingual corpus.
