Debtor, thing owed, Creditor, reason · the verb дължа · working claim, revisable
English owe is one lexical verb. Merriam-Webster’s money line is owes me $5. Oxford prints both owes her father £3 000 and owes £3 000 to her father. Bulgarian дължа is also a verb. Речник на българския език (РБЕ, Институт за български език) heads it ДЪЛЖА, -иш, мин. св. -ах, несв., прех. The one-volume тълковен речник prints дължиш, мин. св. дължах, мин. прич. дължал, and an empty св. slot. No perfective partner is printed on either headword. The aorist cell is a past-tense form. This page makes no telicity claim.
The Debtor is the nominative subject. РБЕ: Ти дължиш, Той … дължи, собственикът дължи, Ванко дължеше, щерката дължи, Българският народ дължи. A full noun in that slot has no dative ending. The bilingual dictionary’s дължиш ми and the one-volume Дължа пари leave the first-person and second-person pronoun unspelled. The verb ending carries the person.
The thing owed is the direct object. РБЕ sense 1, Имам да давам на някого нещо материално: трийсет крини жито, известна сума, петстотин овци и 200 коня, не пет, а десет хиляди гроша. The one-volume government cell is Какво, and the short line is Дължа пари. The bilingual dictionary prints десет лева. That object is not the person.
The Creditor is not a bare accusative person. English owes me $5 puts the person in a bare object. РБЕ’s definition of sense 1 spells the person as на някого. The citation is Ти дължиш на болярина Стефан трийсет крини жито. на болярина Стефан is на plus a noun. The noun has no dative case ending. The same sense prints the dative indefinite някому: собственикът дължи някому не пет, а десет хиляди гроша. The short clitic, where a dictionary prints one in the Creditor slot, is dative. РБЕ: ни дължите петстотин овци, му дължиш уважение, им дължа сърдечна благодарност. The one-volume line is Дължа ти удовлетворение. The bilingual dictionary: дължиш ми десет лева, glossed you owe me ten levs, and ДЪЛЖА ти (пари) за бензина, glossed I owe you for the petrol. ми, ти, му, ни, and им are the dative short forms. The accusative short forms ме, те, го, я, and ги are not printed as the Creditor of дължа. Wiktionary’s money line is Дължа му пет кинта, again му, glossed I owe him five quid. ѝ is not the Creditor in these articles. In РБЕ’s да ѝ даде, the clitic belongs to даде.
Clitic doubling is not printed on дължа. A line has the clitic, or it has на plus a noun. дължиш ми десет лева has ми and no на-phrase. дължиш на болярина Стефан has на and no clitic. No opened article prints му together with на plus the same person. Дължа му на болярина десет лева stacks the printed clitic, the printed на-phrase, and the printed десет лева. The sentence is constructed. It is not one filed citation.
за plus a noun is the reason, when a dictionary prints it. The bilingual line ДЪЛЖА ти (пари) за бензина puts the petrol in за. The English gloss is I owe you for the petrol. The sum sits in parentheses in the Bulgarian line. РБЕ sense 3 prints им дължа сърдечна благодарност за топлия прием. за топлия прием is what the thanks are for. The money citations of sense 1 do not use за for the sum. известна сума в една банка uses в. The idiom Дължа на Михаля is glossed by the bilingual dictionary as not being right in the head. That на is not a Creditor.
Gratitude and obligation stay on дължа, and the Creditor is still dative or на. РБЕ sense 3, В съчет. с отвл. същ.: му дължиш уважение, щерката дължи покорство на бащата, им дължа сърдечна благодарност. The following line is marked Δ, the dictionary’s composed example: Българският народ дължи вечна признателност на своите синове. The one-volume sense 1, Имам дълг (паричен или нравствен), prints Дължа ти удовлетворение. The bilingual sense 2 prints дължиш ми обяснение, glossed you owe me an explanation. извинение is not the noun in these lines. The article извинение does not print дължа.
Credit, with the person still the subject, is РБЕ sense 2, marked С предл. на: Придобил съм и имам нещо материално или духовно благодарение на някого или на нещо. на нея дължи сега живота си. на когото Ванко дължеше само хляба. На що дължи богатството и името си. дължим на съчиненията. всичко ний на тоя пот дължим. The one-volume sense 2 is На него дължа своя успех. The bilingual dictionary prints ДЪЛЖА живота си на него, glossed I owe my life to him. That gloss keeps the person as subject, the life as object, and the source in to, as English I owe my success to my teachers does. The same bilingual sense then prints той дължеше успеха си на своето постоянство and glosses it his success was due to his perseverance. The Bulgarian clause still has той as subject and успеха си as object. The English gloss makes the success the subject and leaves the person out. That gloss diverges from the clause it translates.
дължа се на is a different frame from English owe X to Y. РБЕ cross-refers дължа се as страд. от дължа в 1 знач., the passive of the material-debt sense, not a separate cause article. The noun дълг sense 1 is Сума, която се дължи на някого. The sum is the subject of се дължи. The Creditor is на някого. There is no Debtor in that clause. The bilingual dictionary glosses the phrase дължи се на as be due to, and that gloss line does not fill a subject or a cause noun. Wiktionary files a reflexive sense, “to have as a cause,” and prints Успеха на партията се дължи на нейната политика, translated The party owes its success to its policies. The Bulgarian subject is the success phrase, in the form Wiktionary prints. The cause is на нейната политика. The English translation puts the party in the subject and the success in the object. English I owe my success to my teachers has the person as subject. се дължи does not.
задължавам / задължа is a different verb. РБЕ: ЗАДЪЛЖАВАМ, imperfective, задължа, perfective, прех., sense 1 Заставям, принуждавам някого да направи, да извърши нещо. The person who is put under the obligation is the direct object: ще задължим хората, Задължете офицерите си, ме задължава да ви благодаря. ме is accusative. That is not the dative Creditor of дължа. задължавам се is Поемам отговорност. The nouns are separate headwords. длъжник sense 1 is a man who has a material debt toward someone. Sense 2, banking, is the opposite of кредитор. Sense 3 is the figurative moral debt: който му беше длъжник за много бели, длъжник на света. кредитор is the person or the bank that gives the credit, and that article’s opposite is дебитор.
