Debtor, Creditor, amount · Finnish marking · working claim, revisable
Finnish has no simple lexical transitive verb for the money sense of English owe. Kielitoimiston sanakirja labels velka substantiivi. The sense begins lainaamisen, sopimuksen tms. tietä syntynyt velvoitus suorittaa jklle rahaa, tavaraa, työtä tms. A headword search for velkaa returns no entry. The inflection line under velka is yks. part. velkaa. That partitive is the form in every olla velkaa line. It does not alternate there with nominative velka or genitive velan. English Wiktionary prints olla velkaa (+ allative), glossed “to owe, to be in debt.” Suomisanakirja’s velkaa page glosses the inflected form “to owe, to be in debt.”
The Debtor is the nominative subject of olla. Iso suomen kielioppi (VISK) §1093 prints Kaikkiaan Venäjä on vielä velkaa kolme ja puoli miljardia markkaa. Venäjä has no case suffix. Kielitoimiston sanakirja prints Paljonko olen velkaa? and Olet minulle selityksen, anteeksipyynnön velkaa. No minä and no sinä is spelled. The person is on olen and on olet. VISK §454 prints the pair Olen ~ jäin sinulle velkaa. jäädä is the other verb in that pair. It is not a second headword for the state.
The Creditor is allative -lle, not a bare object. The citation is Olla velkaa jklle. The filled person is minulle in Olet minulle selityksen, anteeksipyynnön velkaa, and sinulle in the VISK pair. minulle is minä plus -lle. The noun velallinen is henkilö joka on velkaa jklle. English Wiktionary names that slot allative and prints Olet minulle velkaa tuhat euroa. VISK §1257: the allative is largely the tulosijainen counterpart of the adessive. In the possessive pattern the allative phrase marks the beneficiary, the recipient (vastaanottaja) or the experiencer. The remark: Annoin kirjan (patientti) hänelle (hyötyjä). Jälkimmäistä kutsutaan eräiden kielten kieliopeissa epäsuoraksi objektiksi. The allative beneficiary is an adverbial. The name “indirect object” is what some other grammars call that adverbial. The Finnish Creditor on these lines is the allative.
The amount is a separate phrase. It is not velkaa. Two printed shapes sit beside the partitive. The genitive n-form: selityksen, anteeksipyynnön in the figurative line, and pikkusumman in Jäi kauppaan pikkusumman velkaa. Nominative of those nouns would be selitys, anteeksipyyntö, pikkusumma. VISK §1226 calls an n-final form in object function genitive. The older name is genetiiviakkusatiivi, and the example there is Söin omenan, not a debt. The same paragraph: a numeral in object function is nominative, not genitive, Söin kaksi (omenaa). That is the other printed shape. §1093’s kolme is nominative. The genitive would be kolmen. The counted nouns are partitive: miljardia, markkaa. English Wiktionary’s tuhat euroa is the same split. tuhat is nominative. The genitive would be tuhannen. euroa is partitive. §454 says an idiom part can be object-shaped or an adverbial, and the boundary is fuzzy. It does not label velkaa or the amount. Whether selityksen is that genitive object is a working claim.
A partitive of an open sum is not a filed complement of olla. The definition’s rahaa, tavaraa, työtä are partitive beside suorittaa, not beside olla. Jäi kauppaan pikkusumman velkaa puts the n-form on the sum, with jäädä, and kauppaan is illative, a place. Olen sinulle kymmenen euroa velkaa is constructed. kymmenen is the nominative of the numeral, on the pattern of kolme and tuhat. The genitive of kymmenen is the same string. The partitive would be kymmentä, and that form is unprinted. euroa follows markkaa and euroa. sinulle is the VISK allative. velkaa is the fixed partitive. The line is not filed. Olen sinulle rahaa velkaa would be a partitive sum. It is not filed.
Where this frame diverges from English X owes Y Z. English owe is one verb. Y is a bare object, owes me $5, or to, owes £3 000 to her father. Z is one object. Finnish has no transitive verb in that frame. The Creditor is an allative goal, -lle, the tulosija §1257 describes, not an indirect object and not a bare object. velkaa is the fixed partitive of velka. It is not the amount. The amount, when a line prints one, is the genitive n-form or a nominative numeral, and the noun the numeral counts is partitive.
velkaantua is a verb, and it is not that copula. Kielitoimiston sanakirja labels it verbi, with the parallel form velkautua, and glosses tulla velkaiseksi, joutua velkaan. velkaan is the illative, the paradigm’s yks. ill. velkaan. The examples are Velkaantunut yhtiö and Kotitaloudet ovat velkaantuneet korviaan myöten. No Creditor and no sum. English Wiktionary glosses the verb as intransitive, “to run into debt, get into debt,” and prints no person. Suomisanakirja: tulla velkaiseksi, ottaa velkaa. The location of the state is a different case. Olla veloissa korviaan myöten is inessive plural veloissa. English Wiktionary’s paradigm labels inessive velassa and veloissa, and prints Olen pahasti veloissani. Singular Olen velassa uses that paradigm form. It is constructed. It is not filed. The illative in joutua velkaan is not this inessive.
The gratitude senses are separate. kiitollinen is an adjective. The citation is olla kiitollinen jllek jstak. Olla kiitollinen lahjasta, avusta puts the thing in the elative. Olen sinulle ikuisesti kiitollinen siitä, että – – puts the person in the allative and the thing in elative siitä. English Wiktionary: grateful, with the elative “for (a thing)” and the allative “to (a person).” ansio sense 2’s special line is expressions meaning että jk on jnk ansiota, filed under kiittää. The ansio entry itself prints Oli hänen ansiotaan, että selviydyimme. hänen is genitive. ansiotaan is the partitive of ansio plus the possessive. The thing there is the että-clause. A headword search for ansiota returns no entry. kiittää sense 1 prints Kiittää jkta lahjasta, kirjeestä, avusta. lahjasta, kirjeestä, and avusta are elative. Sense 2 is olla kiitollinen jllek jstak. The special block is ilmauksissa jotka merkitsevät, että jk on jnk ansiota, and it prints Pelastumisestaan hän sai kiittää hyvää onneaan and Talouskriisi, josta saamme kiittää [= syyttää] lyhytnäköisiä poliitikkoja. Pelastumisestaan and josta are elative, the thing. hyvää onneaan and poliitikkoja are partitive, the one thanked. saada kiittää is the printed chain. English Wiktionary prints Kiitin häntä illasta, partitive häntä, elative illasta. Suomisanakirja prints Sinun pitäisi kiittää häntä, with no elative.
