Where the Dutch frame diverges from the English gloss exchange X for Y with Z. Cambridge, on the lines the German page cites, prints exchange something for something and exchange sth with sb as separate patterns. English for is the thing received. English with is the partner. The WNT states the Dutch counter-Theme in one sentence: Men ruilt iets voor of tegen iets anders. voor and tegen are that one slot. Schrijfwijzer prints them side by side, dollars ruilen tegen / voor euro's, and says the two prepositions have the same meaning, with the accent of tegen on both things and the accent of voor on the thing received. The partner is a different preposition, met. Schrijfwijzer’s person line has no object: wil jij met hem van plaats ruilen? Genootschap Onze Taal says inruilen voor and inruilen tegen are the same exchange, and that the difference is one of use: voor on the transaction, tegen when the thing given is treated as what pays for the thing received.
met the partner, and met the confused item. On ruilen and on intransitive omruilen, met introduces the other person. Schrijfwijzer: met hem. The WNT’s Cremer line: Ik zal gaarne met u omruilen, the seat by the window, no object. Huygens, as the WNT prints the journal, stacks that partner with a counter-Theme in one clause: reyulde met Mr. H., boeckverkooper, een boeck … tegen een oudt. The bookseller is met. The old book is tegen. On verwisselen the same met introduces the item you have taken the other one for. English Wiktionary glosses Je verwisselt me met iemand anders as confusing me with someone else. The WNT’s letter line is de v met de f moet verwisseld worden. f is the other letter. It is the confused item. WikiWoordenboek prints de antwoorden met elkaar verwisseld and gives English mistake and switch for that sense. met elkaar there is the two answers, the items that have changed places with each other.
ruilen with no object. The WNT quotes Potgieter, Laat ons ruilen! The next turns name the verse and then Tegen uwe teekening? The invitation itself has no object and no voor or tegen. Intransitive omruilen in the WNT is the same shape: laten we dan omruilen, and, when the things are named, Willen we met die platen omruilen? The WNT says that on this intransitive the things which are exchanged for one another are introduced by met, and that the person one exchanges with is introduced by the same met. met die platen is the things. met u is the person. Neither line has a direct object.
van + a bare noun. van plaats, van kamer, van gedachten, van baan, van auto. The noun after van has no article in these lines. It names what changes. It is the Theme type, and it is a different phrase from the counter-Theme. The WNT’s Potgieter line stacks it with the partner: met den vreemdeling van plaats wisselde. Schrijfwijzer stacks it the same way on ruilen: met hem van plaats ruilen. WikiWoordenboek prints van kamer te ruilen with no partner and no counter-Theme, and met Tats van gedachten te wisselen with the partner and the bare noun. English Wiktionary prints van auto ruilen voor een dag. voor een dag on that line is the stretch of time. The car is the bare noun after van.
omruilen, return an item. The prefix om- separates. The WNT gives the forms ruilde om, heeft omgeruild, stress on om. The filled trade line is Hij heeft die mooie plaat … tegen een andere omgeruild. tegen een andere stands before the participle. woorden.org prints the shop line as an infinitive, prefix still written with the verb: We mochten de kapotte cd-speler omruilen voor een nieuwe. The player is the object. voor een nieuwe is the counter-Theme. WikiWoordenboek’s car line puts voor after the participle: zijn oude auto omgeruild voor een nieuwere. Schrijfwijzer’s receipt line is bare ruilen, not omruilen: kunt u uw aankoop ruilen. woorden.org’s shop notice is ruilen alleen met kassabon binnen 14 dagen. met kassabon on that notice is the receipt. It is the paper the notice requires. It is a different met from met hem.
inruilen, trade in. The prefix in- separates: ruilde in, heeft ingeruild, and the WNT’s older split in ruylden and in te ruilen. WikiWoordenboek labels the government overgankelijk ~ tegen and prints zijn auto … ingeruild tegen een spiksplinternieuwe. woorden.org prints voor on the same verb: je auto inruilen voor een nieuwe and mijn auto ingeruild voor een nieuwe. Onze Taal prints both, verlofuren inruilen tegen een fiets, ingeruild tegen een nieuwer hybride wagentje, Een jonge auto inruilen voor een andere auto, and, where the exchange is figurative, a preference for voor: zijn messen ingeruild voor penselen. The WNT quotes Van Dale, Bij dezen goudsmid kunt gij uw oud goud inruilen, with no voor and no tegen in the clause, and Van Dale 1976 on the noun inruil: handing in an old product when buying a new one, with a reduction on the price of the new one. Marin, in the WNT, is Goed goed tegen slegt goed inruilen.
wisselen, money and van plaats. There is no separable prefix on this verb. The participle is gewisseld. The WNT prints Als wij geld wisselen and the small-change line ging laten wisselen, and the automaton die geld wisselt. WikiWoordenboek’s currency line is the amount as object and no counter-Theme: Ik wil graag honderd euro wisselen. woorden.org prints the counter-Theme: dollars voor euro's wisselen, and the border line bij de grens moesten we geld wisselen. The place line is van + bare plaats, and the WNT stacks the partner: met den vreemdeling van plaats wisselde. WikiWoordenboek’s Hij moest van de leraar van plaats wisselen has van de leraar as the person the obligation comes from, in moest van, and van plaats as the bare noun. The two van-phrases are different jobs.

The prefix uit- separates: wisselde uit, heeft uitgewisseld, and a finite clause puts the object between the verb and the particle, wisselden vakantieverhalen uit, wisselden een korte verrukte blik uit. Schrijfwijzer splits met and tegen as two uses. uitwisselen met is person with person: ervaringen uitgewisseld met een collega. uitwisselen tegen is thing for thing: mijn oude munten heb uitgewisseld tegen postzegels. The prisoner line keeps them apart: the noun takes the partner, een uitwisseling … mét Zuid-Korea, and the verb takes the counter-Theme, een meesterspion uitwisselen tégen veertig krijgsgevangenen. woorden.org’s reciprocal is recepten met elkaar uitwisselen.
