Several other subjects are topics: 나는, 아버지는, 아이의 부모는, 김 사장은. The topic marker is on the same person. It is not a second role. Where this frame diverges from English pay the bill and pay someone. English pay the bill makes the document the object and brings the sum back as with or in. English pay someone can make the person that object. These Korean verbs do not. The object is the sum, the price, the tax, or the debt. The person, when the pattern has one, is -에게, -한테, or -께. The institution is -에. 계산하다 prints no payee, and the check is either the price-object or left implicit. 갚다 presupposes a prior debt, and the pattern selects the creditor without making the creditor the object. 납부하다 selects an institutional goal with -에, and the standard pattern does not write -에게. No printed line makes the creditor or the payee the object -을/를.
