Payer, recipient, amount, consideration, bill, debt · Polish cloth · working claim, revisable
Four arguments, one of them outer. Payer is the nominative subject, in Voice. Recipient, Amount, and Consideration stay inside the verb’s domain. They are not four sisters of the root. Consideration is not a fourth structural case. WSJP’s schemas of zapłacić put the three inner places on one verb: KOMU + (CO) + (za CO), (KOMU) + (CZYM) + za CO, CO + (CZYM), and CZYM + (za CO). KOMU is the payee. CO is the sum, the bill, or the due. za CO is the goods or the service. The citation Zapłacili miastu 180 tys. zł za wykopanie drzew fills the three inner places in one clause. The same schemas are on płacić, plus (CO) + na CO, which the perfective schemas do not print

Where this frame diverges from English pay the bill, pay the creditor, and pay the amount. English pay the bill makes the document the object and brings the sum back as with or in. English pay someone can make the creditor a bare object. Polish zapłacić puts the sum in the accusative, 180 tys. zł and jakąś kwotę, and puts goods or a service under za plus accusative. The bill is that same accusative on the lists that print rachunki, and the citation nie zapłaciło rachunków. za rachunek is unprinted. The payee is dative, nauczycielom and miastu, not a bare accusative. uregulować matches the English document: rachunek, fakturę, należność are the accusative, and the schema prints no dative payee. spłacić takes the debt as accusative, dług and kredyt. spłacić kogoś, the cousin and brata, makes the person accusative. That is the buy-out. It is not the dative of zapłacić komuś.
