The payer is the subject of the active. Λεξικό της Κοινής Νεοελληνικής (ΛΚΝ), Triantafyllidis Institute, read on Πύλη για την ελληνική γλώσσα, prints Θα σε πληρώσει η ασφάλειά μου and Το αφεντικό δε μας πληρώνει καλά. η ασφάλειά μου and το αφεντικό are the subjects. Several citation lines are infinitives with the subject absent: Πλήρωσα όλους τους λογαριασμούς fills it as first person. The passive makes the bill, the goods, or the person the subject: Εδώ εξοφλούνται λογαριασμοί, Το ψυγείο θα εξοφληθεί, Οι εργάτες δεν πληρώθηκαν ακόμα.
πληρώνω · sense 1 · give or pay a sum. The sum is accusative: Πλήρωσα χίλιες δραχμές για ναύλα. The service is για+accusative, για ναύλα, and the same preposition is on Ακόμα πληρώνω για το διαμέρισμα που αγόρασα. Means and manner sit in one series: με δόσεις, με επιταγή, με γραμμάτιο, με συνάλλαγμα, με πιστωτική κάρτα, με γερμανικά μάρκα, and με το κομμάτι / με την ώρα. με+accusative is that series. σε ρευστό and σε είδος are in the same series and name the form of the money. τοις μετρητοίς is the fixed phrase in that series. The payee question is separate: Σε ποιον / πού / πότε θα πληρώσω; Σε ποιον is σε+accusative. That clause has no bill and no sum. Γκαρσόν, να πληρώσω, παρακαλώ! is a vocative plus the verb, with no object.
Sense 2α · pay the price of goods, of a service, or of the person who supplied it. One accusative series: το φαΐ / το ξενοδοχείο / το ταξί / τον ηλεκτρολόγο / τον υδραυλικό. The thing and the person are alternate fillers of that slot. Πλήρωσα τα έπιπλα πολύ ακριβά. Πώς θα πληρώσετε το ψυγείο, με δόσεις ή τοις μετρητοίς; Πλήρωσα όλους τους λογαριασμούς. Πλήρωσες το εισιτήριο; No line in this sense puts the bill and the person in one clause.
Sense 2β · pay a due or a debt. Accusative only: το νοίκι, τους φόρους, το μισθό, το φως, το νερό, το τηλέφωνο, την αποζημίωση, τη διατροφή, τους τόκους, τα λύτρα, τη συνδρομή. No payee is in these lines.
Person as the accusative, with no bill in the clause. Θα σε πληρώσει η ασφάλειά μου: σε is the accusative clitic. Τον πλήρωσε μ’ ένα πλαστό πεντοχίλιαρο: τον is the accusative clitic, and με+accusative is the note. Το αφεντικό δε μας πληρώνει καλά: μας is the accusative clitic. Οι εργάτες δεν πληρώθηκαν ακόμα τα μεροκάματά τους: the workers are the passive subject and the daily wages stay accusative. Θα πληρωθείς καλά τη δουλειά σου: the job is accusative. These are the wage and payout lines. πληρώνω τον υπάλληλο is constructed on τον ηλεκτρολόγο / τον υδραυλικό and on δε μας πληρώνει. An active clause with both a person and a bill as two accusatives is unprinted.
εξοφλώ · πληρώνω κτ. έτσι ώστε να μη χρωστώ πλέον· αποπληρώνω. The debt or the instrument of the debt is accusative: ένα δάνειο, ένα γραμμάτιο, μια συναλλαγματική. Το ψυγείο θα εξοφληθεί σε τρεις ισόποσες δόσεις: the goods are the subject, and σε+accusative is the instalments. Εδώ εξοφλούνται λογαριασμοί του νερού, του τηλεφώνου και του ηλεκτρικού ρεύματος: the bills are the subject. The schema ~ κπ., πληρώνω ό,τι του χρωστώ names a person as that object. No example fills the person. του in the gloss is the object of χρωστώ. No example puts a payee beside the bill or the debt.
ξοφλώ and ξοφλάω · the header is ξοφλώ & -άω, marked (οικ.) under sense 1α, glossed εξοφλώ. Δεν του χρωστώ τίποτα· τον έχω ξοφλήσει: του is the object of χρωστώ, and τον is the accusative object of ξοφλήσει. Ο λογαριασμός δεν είναι ξοφλημένος: the bill is the subject of the participle. The bill and a payee are not in one clause of ξοφλώ.
καταβάλλω 2 · learned, etymology λόγ. · πληρώνω μια οφειλή ή ένα συμφωνημένο ποσό χρημάτων. Θα καταβάλω το φόρο σε τρεις μηνιαίες δόσεις: the tax is accusative, and σε+accusative is the instalments. Άρχισε να καταβάλλεται το επίδομα αδείας and Η χρηματική εγγύηση πρέπει να καταβληθεί έως αύριο make the sum the subject. No payee and no institution are printed. A σε+accusative payee on this verb is constructed. καταβάλλω 1, defeat or exhaust, stays off the bill.
ξεπληρώνω · επιστρέφω την οφειλή μου, πληρώνω, εξοφλώ ένα χρέος. The example of that sense is Θα δουλέψω σκληρά και θα σε ξεπληρώσω: σε is the accusative clitic, and no debt noun is in the clause. The kindness sense, off the bill, prints the person as a genitive clitic and the thing as accusative: Κάποια μέρα θα σου ξεπληρώσω το καλό που μου έκανες, and Θα στο ξεπληρώσει ο Θεός (στο is σου+το). A debt noun beside a genitive clitic, θα σου ξεπληρώσω το χρέος, is constructed on that clitic pattern and on the definition’s χρέος.
Where this frame diverges from English pay the bill and pay someone. English pay the bill makes the document the object and brings the sum back as with or in. πληρώνω makes the bill, the sum, the goods, or the due the accusative, and the means is με+accusative or the form σε ρευστό / τοις μετρητοίς. English pay someone can make the person the object of the same bill event. On πληρώνω the printed accusative person (τον ηλεκτρολόγο, σε, τον, μας) occurs in clauses that do not contain the bill. Σε ποιον θα πληρώσω; is the payee, and that clause does not contain the bill. A genitive clitic του / της beside the bill is unprinted on πληρώνω. εξοφλώ prints the debt or the bill and does not print a payee beside it. καταβάλλω prints the sum, and its σε+accusative is the instalments.
