A rental, on this reading, has a Lessor, a Lessee, the Theme, and, where a source names them, a Price and a time. They are not equal sisters of alugar. Voice adds one party as subject. The root’s complement is the Theme, a direct object. Portuguese nouns have no case ending, so that object is not a morphological accusative. The other party is an added phrase. A low Appl is the working home of that added person, the same kind of added argument the English gloss gives the person of rent … to. The drawing is revisable. On the take reading the added person is the Lessor, a Source, and the same preposition is what the European correction prints. The dictionaries print the preposition and, in one quotation, the clitic. They do not print the head.
What is different from English rent and lease. Cambridge’s verb rent is direction-neutral. I rented a car from a garage has the taker as subject and the owner in from. My Dad has a villa that he rents to tourists and The house is rented out to students have the owner as subject and the taker in to. The same entry prints a bare first object: [ + two objects ] The old lady rented me her spare bedroom for £200 a week. Cambridge lease prints the same bare object beside the prepositional limb: [ + two objects ] lease the apartment to him / lease him the apartment, and the business entry prints lease sth (from sb) and lease sth (out) (to sb). Portuguese alugar is also one lemma for both directions. Priberam’s first sense is the pair with no clause: Dar ou tomar de aluguer. The preposition that Ciberdúvidas 36224, citing the Dicionário Gramatical de Verbos Portugueses, assigns to the other party is a in both directions. The tenant-subject line is aluguei um apartamento à amiga da minha mãe. The lessor-subject line is alugou a casa da cidade a estudantes. English from and to make the cut that this a does not make. A bare full noun in the first-object slot of rented me her spare bedroom is unprinted.

No printed rental line stacks a named subject, the Theme, the other party, and por plus a numeral. Ciberdúvidas prints à amiga and a estudantes and no sum. The Houaiss quotation prints lhe and the manner muito barato. Aulete’s older rate is a dois mil réis anuais, on arrendar, with no por.

Marking map. One preposition can name either party. Read the subject, then the marker.
Direct object of the Theme. Priberam alugar prints no clause. The senses are Dar ou tomar de aluguer, Arrendar, Assalariar, and [Brasil, Informal] Ocupar o tempo de alguém. Infopédia’s general-use sense is one line for both directions: ceder o uso de ou usar (bem móvel ou imóvel), por um tempo determinado e mediante pagamento. The legal senses split the direction and restrict the theme to a movable: sense 2 dar de aluguer, sense 3 tomar de aluguer. Michaelis sense 1, vtd, is Tomar de aluguel: Precisamos alugar um apartamento. Sense 2, vtdi, is Ceder em locação, with no example and no preposition filled. Wikcionário lists dar de aluguel and tomar de aluguel and prints no clause. The wage sense and the colloquial time-occupying sense stay off the rental frame.
a of either party. Ciberdúvidas 36224, citing the DGVP (that dictionary was not opened): alugar is transitivo direto e indireto. The sense utilizar mediante aluguer takes a: aluguei um apartamento à amiga da minha mãe. The sense ceder por aluguer takes a: alugou a casa da cidade a estudantes. Direct-only, with no preposition: ele aluga bicicletas and a rapariga alugaria um quarto na baixa da cidade. The same answer’s editorial note says what is said about the syntax of alugar is also valid for arrendar. The a does not choose the party. Spanish alquilar is the same shape: DPD’s Pedro alquiló el piso a su hermano is ambiguous, and de in the definition is not a test that forces the subject.
lhe. Printed on the rental in the Houaiss quotation that Ciberdúvidas 26418 copies: seu senhorio aluga-lhe muito barato o apartamento. The subject is the landlord. lhe is the person who receives the apartment. The Houaiss site itself was not opened, so the quotation is used as Ciberdúvidas prints it. Priberam, Infopédia, and the Michaelis rental lines opened here do not print lhe. Aulete’s rental labels name a and para, or a and de. The lhe of Não lhe arrendo o ganho is the idiom glossed as not envying someone’s lot. It is not a Lessee. A clause that doubles lhe with a full a-phrase is unprinted. lhes is unprinted. Neither is constructed as a grammatical claim.
para, in the dictionary that prints the label. Aulete alugar sense 1: [tdi. + a, para : Aquela firma aluga televisores para hotéis.] The label names a and para. The example fills para. Aulete arrendar sense 1: [tdi. + a, para : Arrendou a sua fazenda para o amigo.] Ciberdúvidas 36224 prints a and does not discuss para. This page does not rank the two prepositions beyond those prints.
de of a Source, and de inside the Theme. The question on Ciberdúvidas 36224 wanted de for the tenant: aluguei um apartamento da amiga da minha mãe. The answer, for the European grammar it cites, replaces that de with a. The P.S. records the Brazilian construction alugar alguma coisa de alguém, from the consultant Luciano Eduardo de Oliveira, and cites Napoleão Mendes de Almeida, Dicionário de Questões Vernáculas (the book was not opened): arrendar (alguma coisa) de alguém against the proprietor’s arrenda (alguma coisa) a alguém. Aulete’s take frame of arrendar is the line that fills both: [tdr. + a, de : Queria ser agicultor, e arrendou ao/do amigo uma fazenda.] The spelling agicultor and the slash ao/do are the entry’s. Priberam’s arrendou a casa de um amigo and Michaelis’s Arrendou a fazenda do cunhado put de inside the Theme. That de names whose house or farm it is. It is not the separate Source phrase of the Aulete label.
Price and duration. No rental clause opened here has por plus a numeral. Infopédia’s por um tempo determinado and mediante pagamento, and arrendar’s legal por prazo e preço estipulados, are definition prose. Aulete’s older block defines dar ou tomar de ou por renda and prints the rate as a dois mil réis anuais cada arco on Arrendava-os aos lojistas (R. da Silva). That a is a unit rate. It is not the party a of a estudantes. durante is unprinted. Michaelis por muitas horas belongs to the colloquial sense, the person whose time is taken. English for £200 a week puts the sum and the week in one for. A filled Portuguese por plus a numeral is not constructed as a dictionary line.

Each row lines up one English slot with a Portuguese slot. The alignment type says what happens to the slot: = (same object status), or shift (a bare object, to, or from ↔ the Portuguese marker the line prints). Printed dictionary lines come first. Every other Portuguese sentence is constructed, modelled on a printed line. They show the working alignment. They are not frequency, and not a bilingual corpus.

Related · arrendar, senhorio, arrendatário
arrendar is the property and land lease, and it is both directions. Priberam’s rental homonym, arrendar¹, sense 1: Permitir que alguém pague regularmente para poder utilizar um imóvel; dar em arrendamento (ex.: o senhorio arrenda a casa a estudantes). The subject is the senhorio. The Theme is a casa. The Lessee is a estudantes. Sense 2: Pagar regularmente ao proprietário uma determinada quantia para utilizar um imóvel; tomar em arrendamento (ex.: para poder trabalhar, o artista arrendou um ateliê; arrendou a casa de um amigo). The subject is the tenant. de um amigo sits inside a casa. The synonym line is ALUGAR, RENDAR. Infopédia’s general-use sense is the same pair as alugar, bem móvel ou imóvel. The legal sense is one line for both directions, and the theme is an immovable: ceder ou obter o uso de (bem imóvel) por prazo e preço estipulados. Michaelis prints both: Arrendou terras a um amigo on Dar em arrendamento, and Arrendou a casa onde estabeleceu a clínica plus Arrendou a fazenda do cunhado on Tomar em arrendamento, alugar. Wikcionário’s first sense is dar ou tomar de renda, with the English gloss rent, and no clause. The lace homonym, the agricultural homonym, and the reins homonym (Priberam [Pouco usado]) stay off this frame.
European and Brazilian labels, where a source prints them. The editorial note on Ciberdúvidas 36224 (21/02/2021): in Portugal, alugar with immovables (casa, apartamento, andar) is generally rejected, and the form given as correct is arrendar, arrendei um apartamento rather than aluguei um apartamento. The note quotes Maria Regina Rocha and others, Assim é que é Falar (the book was not opened): the two verbs are used interchangeably, and strictly one says arrendar uma casa. The same note records older use with no censure: Vasco Botelho de Amaral (1958) prints alugam-se quartos, and Camilo (A Queda de um Anjo, 1866) and Teixeira Gomes (1909) print alugou casa. Ciberdúvidas 1820, Rui Pinto Duarte, quotes the Código Civil of 1966, art. 1023.º: A locação diz-se arrendamento quando versa sobre coisa imóvel, aluguer quando incide sobre coisa móvel. The 1867 code, art. 1596, is nearly the same wording. He treats the split as a legal convention. Oral use mixes the verbs. Brazilian Michaelis prints Precisamos alugar um apartamento with no European rejection in the article, and Aulete prints alugar o imóvel the same way. Aulete labels the let sense of arrendarJur.
The nouns, where the articles print them. Priberam senhorio sense 3: Dono, proprietário de um prédio, em relação aos seus inquilinos. Infopédia: proprietário de um prédio alugado ou arrendado. The noun is also the subject of Priberam’s o senhorio arrenda a casa and of the Houaiss seu senhorio aluga-lhe. Priberam arrendatário: Indivíduo que toma algo de arrendamento, geralmente uma habitação, synonym INQUILINO, example mediação entre proprietários e arrendatários. Infopédia: aquele que arrenda um bem, um prédio, etc.; inquilino; caseiro; rendeiro. Neither noun article prints a verb frame. The Michaelis and Aulete articles for these two nouns were not opened.
locar. Ciberdúvidas 26418, quoting Houaiss, gives locar as alugar, arrendar, with locar um imóvel and locar um serviço, and also the locate senses. Those locate senses stay off the rental frame. The same answer’s conclusion says that in Portugal one generally uses alugar. That conclusion and the 2021 note on immovables are both printed. This page records both. It does not rank them past the prints.
Where other rent pages match this frame, and where they diverge.Spanish alquilar is one lemma, and a does not choose the party. Spanish arrendar is a formal near-synonym and is not a page. Portuguese arrendar is given the frames above, including senhorio, a estudantes, and Aulete’s ao/do. French louer uses à for both parties. Wikcionário calls alugar a cognate of louer. Italian affittare is the dwelling verb on that page, and noleggiare is the movable. Portuguese legal terminology splits movable aluguer and immovable arrendamento across two lemmas, while the general-use senses of both verbs still name bem móvel ou imóvel. German vermieten is lessor-only. English rent keeps both directions and writes them as to and from, and it can leave the Lessee bare.
Examples
Argument difference. The best English gloss of a lessor subject plus a Lessee is rent … to or rent out … to, and of a tenant subject plus a Lessor is rent … from. Lease matches the property reading and prints the same to / from split, plus a bare object. Portuguese prints one direct object. The full other party is a in both directions in the European correction. Aulete also fills para on the let frame and de beside a on the take frame of arrendar. The dative of the Lessee, where it is printed, is lhe.

What se shows
The printed rental se is plural, and the rooms are the subject. Ciberdúvidas 36224 quotes Vasco Botelho de Amaral, Grande Dicionário de Dificuldades e Subtilezas do Idioma Pátrio (1958; the book was not opened): alugam-se quartos, with no comment in that dictionary on pairing alugar with rooms. The note uses the line as older use. It does not call the construction a sign in so many words, and it does not print singular aluga-se or arrenda-se. The constructed singular Aluga-se casa above is modelled on that plural and on Vende-se esta casa, which Ciberdúvidas 10657 discusses on the sell page. It is not a dictionary line. Spanish Se alquilan habitaciones is the agreeing plural on that page. Michaelis alugava-se para as construtoras is the wage pronominal, a person in service, the same neighbourhood as Priberam’s Assalariar. It is not the rooms.
