A commercial rental, on this reading, has a Lessor, a Lessee, the Property, and a Price. A period may be named in the same clause. They are not four or five equal sisters of one Dutch verb. The lessor verb and the lessee verb are different lemmas. On verhuren the subject is the one who lets the thing. Van Dale’s free dictionary prints in huur geven : een huis verhuren. The WNT’s definition is (Aan iem. zekere goederen, diensten, rechten of personen) tegen een bep. vergoeding en voor een zekere periode in gebruik afstaan. From the 17th century, that entry says, the person is usually named with a prepositional phrase introduced by aan. woorden.org’s encyclopedic line prints zij verhuren deze kamer aan een student. On huren the subject is the one who takes the thing. Van Dale prints in gebruik, in dienst nemen tegen betaling : een huis huren. The WNT’s sense 2 is Iets huren, the use for an agreed time against payment. A van-phrase of the lessor is unprinted on that sense. One bij-phrase is printed, on the finite verb huurde inside the verhuren article. The compensation in the WNT definition of verhuren is tegen. One citation puts the sum in voor. The same letter voor in that definition is the period, voor een zekere periode. The two voor-phrases are not one argument. Full noun phrases show no case ending.

What is different from the English gloss. English rent is direction-neutral. The subject can be either party, and the direction sits in the preposition: rent the room to a student (the subject lets it) and rent a room from the owner (the subject takes it). Dutch does not keep the choice inside one lemma. ver- on huren is the lessor-side prefix in the entries that say so: the WNT’s etymology is Van huren met ver-, WikiWoordenboek says Afgeleid van huren met het voorvoegsel ver-, and the English Wiktionary’s Dutch etymology is ver- + huren. Rent … to and rent out match verhuren. Rent … from matches huren only as far as the subject. The lessor’s marker on huren is not a printed from-phrase. German vermieten versus mieten splits the lemma the same way, and still prints a morphological dative, jemandem, beside an + accusative. Dutch verhuren, in the modern lines read here, names that person with aan and prints no dative ending. The 16th-century dative the WNT records stays that century’s note. It is not ranked as a modern bare indirect object.

Places · who wears which marking

Van Dale, woorden.org, WikiWoordenboek, and the WNT do not put lessor, lessee, property, a sum, and a period in one modern clause. woorden.org has the lessee in aan and no price. The WNT’s 1660 citation has aan and a voor-sum and no period unit. Bergmann has tegen and per week and no aan.

Argument difference. English rent the room to a student and rent a room from the owner keep one verb and put the direction in to or from. Dutch writes the direction as the lemma. verhuren has the lessor as subject and the lessee in aan. huren has the lessee as subject. German vermieten also splits the lemma, and prints the lessee as jemandem or as an + accusative. The Dutch lines read here print aan and do not print a dative ending. The lessor on huren is not English from: bij is printed once, and van is unprinted. The property is the one object on both lemmas. worden promotes that property. A passive that makes the lessee the subject and leaves the room as object is not a frame in the dictionaries checked, and the verkopen page keeps the matching promotion bad.

aan, bij, and the two lemmas

The preposition of the other party is an operation on a place the lemma has already chosen. It does not add a third party, and it does not put both directions on one verb.

aan is the lessee of verhuren. aan een student in the woorden.org line. aan een gezin in the English Wiktionary. aan D. in Wassenaer. The WNT says that from the 17th century this person is usually named that way. A clause with the thing and no person is also printed: Van Dale’s een huis verhuren, WikiWoordenboek’s Dit huis wordt verhuurd. The 16th-century dative is the WNT’s historical note, illustrated there by a bare person with no visible ending: verhuert te hebben Peeter van marscalck een huys (Van Berlaimont [1536]). That string is not ranked as a modern frame. A dative ending on a full modern noun phrase is unprinted, because full Dutch noun phrases do not show one.

bij is not aan. by een Kamerbehanger sits on huurde. The subject of that verb takes the rooms. aan een student sits on verhuren. The subject of that verb lets the room. The two prepositions mark different parties of different lemmas. They are not alternatives of one indirect object in one printed clause.

The two lemmas are the direction. ver- is the lessor-side prefix in the WNT, in WikiWoordenboek, in ANW’s word-formation line, and in the English Wiktionary’s Dutch etymology. English rent does not have that prefix pair inside one entry for a single verb. A clause with only the room does not, by one preposition of huren, become the lessor’s clause. The verb does that. WikiWoordenboek’s hyponym line that includes verhuren under huren stays a morphological list. It is not read as a single direction-neutral frame.

worden promotes the property. Dit huis wordt verhuurd. Dat huys is verhuert. The lessee is not the subject of those lines. *Werd de student de kamer verhuurd? is constructed on the verkopen limit. It is not a citation. A krijgen-passive of the lessee is unprinted. It is not filled in.

A question for the price. It is not in the dictionary entries read. The printed price wording is tegen and, in one citation, voor plus a sum. No question word is added. The noun waarvoor on huur is not resumed here as a verb test.

Derivations · working sketches, revisable

Each sketch is a working drawing, not a locked analysis. The point of the drawing is two lemmas, one object, an aan-phrase that the WNT and woorden.org print as the lessee of verhuren, and a price that is tegen or a voor-MeasureP according to the line. A van-lessor is not in the drawing, because it is unprinted. Open one sketch at a time. Which theta role is the object in this low domain is the revisable note Causative templates and argument selection. This page does not edit that note.

English rent allows either external argument and puts the direction in to or from. French louer allows either external argument. Dutch verhuren is the lessor’s external argument in the lines read. Dutch huren is the lessee’s. ver- marks that choice of lemma in the etymologies cited above. It is not given a seat as a second argument.

A single clause with both an aan-lessee and a van-lessor is unprinted. Russian draws the source as у plus genitive on снимать. Nothing read here draws that van under huren. The sourced pieces are the prefix etymology, the two participles, and the two pasts. The working analysis, revisable, is that ver- chooses the lessor lemma and stays on the verb. It is not the separable particle of verkopen’s neighbours, and it is not Hungarian bérbe, which is an illative noun. A string in which ver- follows the finite verb is not in the entries read. English rent keeps both directions and writes them as to and from. Dutch changes the lemma. The lessee’s marker on the lessor lemma is aan. German writes that person as a morphological dative or as an + accusative. The lessor’s marker on the Dutch lessee lemma is not a printed van. That is where the frame diverges from the English gloss, and where it diverges again from German: the gloss is one verb with to and from, the Dutch frames are two verbs with aan and one bij, and the German lessor-verb still prints a dative.

On verhuren, the aan-phrase comes to have the use of the thing. On huren, the subject is the one who takes the use, and the one printed source is bij. Working paper. Dutch micro-entry. The frames were read in the WNT under verhuren, huren, onderverhuren, pachten, and leasen; in Van Dale’s free dictionary as preserved on the Internet Archive; in woorden.org; in WikiWoordenboek; in the Dutch section of the English Wiktionary; and in ANW under verhuurder, with the verb articles verhuren and huren read for grammar only. Those sources print a lessor subject of verhuren, an aan-lessee, one object, tegen or a voor-sum, a lessee subject of huren, and one bij.
Constructed examples. Dictionary lines are marked as printed. Ik verhuur de kamer aan een student voor 500 euro per maand and the rejected Werd de student de kamer verhuurd? are constructed on those lines.
Arity. Index 2 does not list verhuren. Index 2 Dutch Transfer is uitwisselen; geven. Surface count can name a lessor, a lessee, a property, and a price. The lexicon does not list them as four co-arguments of one flat verb. The lemma chooses the direction. Voice adds one party. aan, on verhuren, adds the lessee in the lines that print it. The root takes the thing. A period in the definition’s voor is not filed as a fifth sister. ver- is the prefix of the lessor lemma, not a second object.
What this page does not do. Person-hire huren and the reflexive self-hire stay off this rental frame. onderverhuren, pachten, verpachten, and leasen stay on this page. No English page of rent is opened. No second Dutch page is opened for the lessee verb. The disagreement about the direction of leasen is not ranked.

Hierarchy

Not a flat grid of four sisters of one verb. A flat grid would give verhuren a lessee subject, or give huren the aan of verhuren as its lessor, or treat the period’s voor as the sum’s voor. verhuren shows a lessor subject, one object, and aan where the entry prints it. huren shows a lessee subject and one object.

The price wording is tegen or a voor-sum. They are not stacked. voor een zekere periode is not a second price. per week is a rate beside Bergmann’s tegen.

What Dutch changes, against the English gloss rent, is the lemma of the direction. English writes to and from on one verb. Dutch writes verhuren for the lessor as subject and huren for the lessee as subject, and does not print van as the match of from. What Dutch changes against German is the lessee’s marker on the lessor verb. German writes a dative or an. Dutch, in the modern lines, writes aan and no dative ending.

In een huis huren, the subject takes the use, and no source is named. In the Philanthrope line the source is bij. ver- names the lessor lemma. It does not name the person. A clause with only the room does not, by a preposition of one verb, say both directions. verhuren says the subject lets it. huren says the subject takes it.

  • English rent. One verb. The subject is the lessor with to, or the lessee with from. The gloss matches both Dutch directions only by changing the lemma, and the Dutch lessee verb does not print from as van. No English page is opened.
  • English rent out. Lessor as subject. The English Wiktionary’s gloss of Dutch verhuren is rent, rent out. It matches verhuren. It does not match huren.
  • vermieten. The lessor is the subject. The lessee is a dative or an + accusative. The other direction is mieten. von of the lessor on mieten is unprinted there. Dutch prints aan and does not print the dative ending. The prefix ver- does not, on the German page, replace that dative.
  • bérbe ad. The lessor lemmas are bérbe ad and kiad. The lessee lemma is bérel. The dative is printed on kiad. An ablative lessor is unprinted. Dutch prints aan on the lessor verb itself, and prints one bij on huurde. bérbe is an illative noun plus ad. Dutch ver- is a prefix, and the participle is verhuurd.
  • сдавать / сдать. The lessor is the subject. The lessee is dative in the Bulgakov line. The lessee as subject is снимать, and the lessor on that verb is у plus genitive. Dutch prints aan and does not print van as that source.
  • wynajmować / wynająć. Both directions on one aspect pair. The lessee is dative when the subject lets the thing. The lessor is od plus genitive or u plus genitive when the subject takes it. Dutch does not keep both directions on huren, and does not print van.
  • louer. Both directions on one lemma. The ordinary other party is à. Dutch does not give the owner and the taker that one verb. WikiWoordenboek’s French gloss of huren is louer. The Dutch frame is still the lemma split.
  • alquilar and affittare. Spanish keeps both directions on one lemma, and the a-phrase does not choose the party. Italian usually splits the theme, a dwelling against a movable, and a source phrase on the prendere reading is unprinted there. Dutch splits the direction onto verhuren and huren and does not make that theme split: a house, a room, a boat, and, on the neighbour leasen, a car, are all printed somewhere in the entries read. leasen is not given verhuren’s frame.
  • verkopen. The buyer is a bare indirect object or aan, and the goods are the one object. The price in the notes is voor, with tegen and à printed and unranked. worden promotes the goods. A buyer-subject of that passive stays bad. verhuren shares aan, one object, and that passive limit. It does not share a single lemma for both directions, and its printed price cloths are the WNT’s tegen and Wassenaer’s voor, not Taaladvies’s à. The sale is not a rental.
  • betalen. The money is the object, and voor is Consideration of what the money is paid for. On verhuren the object is the property, and voor in Wassenaer is the price of the letting. The same letter is not the same argument. aan on betalen is the recipient of the money. aan on verhuren is the lessee of the room.

  • van of the lessor on huren. Unprinted in Van Dale, woorden.org, WikiWoordenboek, and WNT sense 2. Not starred. Not constructed as a frame. van de gemeente stays on pachten. Russian у and Polish od are the other languages’ prepositions. German von on mieten is unprinted there too.

  • A voor-sum on huren. Unprinted. The historical price in sense 2 is om een gouden kroon. The definition says tegen betaling. Not constructed as a frame of huren.

  • Lessee-subject of worden. Unprinted. The printed passive promotes the house. The starred string is the verkopen parallel, constructed. krijgen of the lessee is unprinted.
  • Direction of leasen. The WNT and Van Dale gloss it as hiring, especially of cars and equipment. woorden.org’s encyclopedic lines include both huren and verhuren. Not ranked. Not a page. The advertisement’s per maand is not moved onto verhuren.
