Voice[Lessor ∨ Lessee] + other partya · lhe · Brazilian de + Themedirect object · Price and duration unranked as a filled MeasureP

Lessee, when the subject lets = a + NP · Aulete’s label also para · dative lhe in the Houaiss quotation · Lessor, when the subject takes = the same a in the DGVP correction · de on Aulete’s take frame of arrendar · Theme = direct object · no morphological case

A rental, on this reading, has a Lessor, a Lessee, the Theme, and, where a source names them, a Price and a time. They are not equal sisters of alugar. Voice adds one party as subject. The root’s complement is the Theme, a direct object. Portuguese nouns have no case ending, so that object is not a morphological accusative. The other party is an added phrase. A low Appl is the working home of that added person, the same kind of added argument the English gloss gives the person of rent … to. The drawing is revisable. On the take reading the added person is the Lessor, a Source, and the same preposition is what the European correction prints. The dictionaries print the preposition and, in one quotation, the clitic. They do not print the head.

What is different from English rent and lease. Cambridge’s verb rent is direction-neutral. I rented a car from a garage has the taker as subject and the owner in from. My Dad has a villa that he rents to tourists and The house is rented out to students have the owner as subject and the taker in to. The same entry prints a bare first object: [ + two objects ] The old lady rented me her spare bedroom for £200 a week. Cambridge lease prints the same bare object beside the prepositional limb: [ + two objects ] lease the apartment to him / lease him the apartment, and the business entry prints lease sth (from sb) and lease sth (out) (to sb). Portuguese alugar is also one lemma for both directions. Priberam’s first sense is the pair with no clause: Dar ou tomar de aluguer. The preposition that Ciberdúvidas 36224, citing the Dicionário Gramatical de Verbos Portugueses, assigns to the other party is a in both directions. The tenant-subject line is aluguei um apartamento à amiga da minha mãe. The lessor-subject line is alugou a casa da cidade a estudantes. English from and to make the cut that this a does not make. A bare full noun in the first-object slot of rented me her spare bedroom is unprinted.

Places · who wears which marking

No printed rental line stacks a named subject, the Theme, the other party, and por plus a numeral. Ciberdúvidas prints à amiga and a estudantes and no sum. The Houaiss quotation prints lhe and the manner muito barato. Aulete’s older rate is a dois mil réis anuais, on arrendar, with no por.

Each row lines up one English slot with a Portuguese slot. The alignment type says what happens to the slot: = (same object status), or shift (a bare object, to, or from ↔ the Portuguese marker the line prints). Printed dictionary lines come first. Every other Portuguese sentence is constructed, modelled on a printed line. They show the working alignment. They are not frequency, and not a bilingual corpus.

What se shows

The printed rental se is plural, and the rooms are the subject. Ciberdúvidas 36224 quotes Vasco Botelho de Amaral, Grande Dicionário de Dificuldades e Subtilezas do Idioma Pátrio (1958; the book was not opened): alugam-se quartos, with no comment in that dictionary on pairing alugar with rooms. The note uses the line as older use. It does not call the construction a sign in so many words, and it does not print singular aluga-se or arrenda-se. The constructed singular Aluga-se casa above is modelled on that plural and on Vende-se esta casa, which Ciberdúvidas 10657 discusses on the sell page. It is not a dictionary line. Spanish Se alquilan habitaciones is the agreeing plural on that page. Michaelis alugava-se para as construtoras is the wage pronominal, a person in service, the same neighbourhood as Priberam’s Assalariar. It is not the rooms.

alugar is one lemma for both directions. The Theme is the direct object. The other party is a when the subject lets and when the subject takes. Dative lhe is printed in the Houaiss quotation. Aulete also fills para on the let frame and de beside a on the take frame of arrendar. English from and to, and the bare object of rented me her spare bedroom, are the divergence. A numeral under por is unprinted. arrendar stays on this page.
