A lending, on this reading, has a Lender, a Recipient, and a Theme. The WNT’s sense I of leenen is De beschikking over iets geven, and sense I.1 is Iets voor zekeren tijd aan een ander ten gebruike geven, te leen geven, om het daarna terug te ontvangen. The return wording is the definition’s. This page quotes it and does not turn it into an aspect claim. The thing is the object: drie brooden, een boek, mijn auto, 1000 euro. Full noun phrases show no case ending. The other person, on the give reading, is aan plus a noun phrase, or a bare indirect object: aen dyen man, aan mijn zus, aan je zus, iemand een boek, leent my drie brooden, heeft me 1000 euro geleend. Voice adds the lender as the subject. Low ApplHAVE introduces the Recipient inside that one verb domain and relates the Recipient to the Theme. The drawing is the same working claim as the Recipient of betalen and of English give-geometry pay, and it is revisable. Which theta role is the object in this low ApplHAVE domain is the note Causative templates and argument selection. This page does not edit that note.

Where the frame sits against the English gloss. English lend does not mean borrow. The lender is the subject. The recipient is a bare object (lend Chris the car) or a to-phrase (lend the car to Chris). The borrower is the subject of another verb, and the source is from. lenen keeps both directions. Team Taaladvies states the pair in one line: Lenen betekent ‘tijdelijk in gebruik geven’ of ‘tijdelijk in gebruik krijgen’. The WNT numbers them as sense I and sense II. Sense II.1 is Iets voor zekeren tijd van een ander ten gebruike krijgen, te leen krijgen, om het daarna terug te geven. aan, or the bare indirect object, is the give frame. van is the get frame. The lemma stays lenen. Polish pożyczyć makes the same kind of cut, with a bare dative against od plus genitive. Hungarian kölcsönöz makes it with a dative against ablative or elative. German leihen keeps both directions and adds a reflexive dative on the borrow frame. No borrow citation of lenen read here is reflexive. The WNT’s Zich tot iets leenen is the sense of making oneself available. It sits in the give article, in the reflexive cluster, and it is not the borrow frame.

aan on ontlenen is the Source. That is the fine cut. With lenen and with uitlenen, aan names the person who receives the thing. With ontlenen, the WNT’s usual modern phrase, under sense 2b, is a determination in the third case, hetzij omschreven of niet omschreven. The examples under that sentence are Multatuli aan hun geboorte ontleenden and Gorter waaraan … ontleent. Schimmel haar glans ontleende aan de zon sits in sense 2a, beside Wolff en Deken’s ontleend uit. The entry names the collocation Zijn naam ontleenen aan iemand of iets. The two citations under that heading use van (daar van, waar van). Team Taaladvies fills aan in Maart ontleent zijn naam aan de Romeinse god Mars. Taaladvies.net says ontlenen in the whole language area, with an abstract object, means te danken hebben aan, putten uit, overnemen uit, and wordt heel vaak verbonden met het voorzetsel aan. The printed objects there are glans, woorden, and dat citaat. French à flips between prêter and emprunter, two lemmas. Dutch aan flips between lenen / uitlenen and ontlenen. The ordinary borrow frame of lenen itself stays van.

uit on uitlenen is the piece that separates, and the direction is give. The ANW enters uitlenen as a samenkoppeling, left member uit, right member lenen, and prints the finite cell leent uit beside uitleent, and the participle uitgeleend. Van Dale 1950, in the Ensie excerpt, defines it as aan iem. lenen, tijdelijk ten gebruike geven and prints leende uit, heeft uitgeleend. The words after the colon are not in that excerpt. The WNT’s definition is (Een zaak), al dan niet tegen een vergoeding, tijdelijk in gebruik geven (aan iemand). Team Taaladvies: Uitlenen betekent in de standaardtaal ‘tijdelijk in gebruik geven’. Uitlenen is geen standaardtaal in de betekenis ‘tijdelijk in gebruik krijgen’. ont- does not separate. The ANW participle of ontlenen is ontleend, and the present cells are ontleen and ontleent.

Pat and Chris continue the named-participant series on verkopen. A name does not spell case. aan Chris and van Chris are the prepositions. Each row lines up one English slot with its Dutch slot. The alignment type says what happens to the slot: = (same status), shift (a bare English object or to ↔ aan or a bare indirect object; from ↔ van), or one lemma where English uses two. Dictionary lines come first. The constructed Dutch sentences are modelled on a printed line. They show the working alignment, not frequency, and not a bilingual corpus.

Examples

Argument difference. English lend does not mean borrow. Pat lent Chris the car and Pat borrowed the car from Chris are two verbs. The recipient of lend is a bare object or to. The source of borrow is from. lenen is one lemma. The give frame has the lender as subject, the thing as object, and the other person as aan or as a bare indirect object. The get frame has the borrower as subject and the source as van. The preposition selects the direction. uitlenen is the give direction only, and uit separates. On ontlenen, aan marks the source, which is the opposite role from aan with lenen and uitlenen. The objects of that modern aan in the lines read here are abstract or derived: light, words, a quotation, a name, influence. Verschueren, quoted on Taaladvies.net, prints tegen rente inside a gloss. No numeral rate is a fourth sister. Rent is verhuren, unlike 貸す.

One lemma · two prepositions · a particle that is lend-only · an aan that changes role

The preposition is an operation on a place the clause already has. A separated uit is an operation on the verb’s particle. Neither one adds a second English verb by itself. ont- does add another lemma, and on that lemma aan is the source.

aan and the bare indirect object. The recipient of lenen and of uitlenen is aan plus a noun phrase, or a bare indirect object. Team Taaladvies prints both on lenen: aan mijn zus and me. woorden.org prints iemand een boek beside aan. The WNT prints my and aen. aan Chris is the same aan, constructed. English spells the same role as a bare object or as to. Full Dutch noun phrases show no case ending. The two Dutch clothes stay unranked, as on verkopen.

van on the same lenen. Sense II does not change the lemma. van uw' buurman and van je broer are the person. bij de bank is printed for the institution and is not ranked against van. Polish leaves both directions on pożyczyć and uses od. Hungarian kölcsönöz leaves both directions on one lemma and uses a dative against an ablative or an elative. German adds a reflexive dative and von or bei. No borrow line of lenen read here has zich.

The particle is uit on uitlenen. ANW prints leent uit and uitgeleend. Taaladvies.net prints leent boeken uit. Van Dale 1950 prints leende uit, heeft uitgeleend. Team Taaladvies prints uitgeleend aan een vriend. The short examples leave the person out. The definitions still name aan iemand. ontlenen keeps ont- on the verb: ANW ontleent, ontleend.

A lenen line with no preposition does not grow a direction out of the verb. The WNT files such lines under a numbered sense. uitlenen does not take the get reading in the sources read here. ontlenen is where aan is the source. That role reversal is the split pożyczyć does not make inside one preposition, and it is the split à makes across prêter and emprunter.

Open one sketch at a time. The low ApplHAVE claim is the same working claim as on pay and betalen, and it stays revisable.

Sense × language: lend · Dutch (lenen). The returnable-theme sense is the page. The ear, the hand, the supportive name, and the ironic steal reading stay off that frame. Not given a page here: uitlenen, ontlenen, bruikleen. No English lend hub. Geometry neighbors: lend · pożyczyć · lend · kölcsönad · lend · leihen · lend · prêter · rent · verhuren · sell · verkopen · payGIVE · betalen. Index 2 Dutch Transfer cites uitwisselen; geven — not lenen.

Working paper. Dutch micro-entry. The frames were read in the WNT under leenen (M036570), uitleenen (M072041), ontleenen (M045824), and bruikleen (M011913); in Taaladvies.net and Team Taaladvies; in the ANW grammar articles for lenen, uitlenen, ontlenen, and lener; in Van Dale 1950 as served for uitlenen and the opening of ontlenen. The Ensie excerpt of Koenen 1937 breaks off inside tijdelijk ten gebruike af and is not used for the frames. woorden.org supplies van je broer, aan je zus, and iemand een boek. The Recipient is a low ApplHAVE argument, a working claim shared with pay and give on this site, and it is revisable.
Constructed examples. Dictionary lines are marked as printed. Pat leent het boek aan Chris, Pat leent het boek van Chris, Ik leen hem het boek, and Hij leent het boek uit are marked constructed. No frame is starred.
Arity. Index 2 does not list lenen. Surface count can name a subject, an aan-phrase or a bare indirect object or a van-phrase, and a theme. The lexicon does not list four co-arguments of one flat V. Voice adds the subject. On the lend frame, low ApplHAVE adds the Recipient. The root takes the Theme. van is the Source of lenen sense II. uit is the particle of uitlenen, not a further sister. Interest wording is not a fourth sister in the lines read.
What this page does not do. It does not open uitlenen, ontlenen, or bruikleen as pages. It does not open an English page of lend. The ear, the hand, the supportive name, and the steal reading stop at the non-transfer senses. The rent frames stay on verhuren. The Japanese frames stay on 貸す. The Polish one-lemma split stays on pożyczyć. The Hungarian dative-versus-ablative split stays on kölcsönöz.

Hierarchy

Not a flat grid of four sisters. A flat grid would give lenen a Recipient, a Source, a Theme, and a rate in one clause. The entries read here do not print that clause. lenen shows one object, the Theme, and one other party: aan or a bare indirect object when the subject lends, van when the subject borrows.

1000 euro = one object. See the case sketch. The sum sits in the theme slot. op interest, met rente, and the definition’s tegen een vergoeding are interest or compensation wordings. They are not a second object beside the sum.

What Dutch shows, against the English gloss, is where the direction lives. English uses lend or borrow. Lend takes a bare recipient or to. Borrow takes from. lenen uses one lemma, and the preposition selects: aan or a bare indirect object, or van. uitlenen is the lend direction with a separable uit. ontlenen uses aan as the source. That aan is a different marker from the Recipient’s aan. Polish uses od on pożyczyć. Hungarian uses ablative or elative on kölcsönöz. French uses à as the source on emprunter.

Geometry · lenen beside the live roots

In Ik leen mijn auto elke zaterdag aan mijn zus, the speaker hands over the car. In Leent gij koren van uw' buurman, the subject would take the grain from the neighbour. The definitions name return. This page quotes that wording and does not add an aspect label.

  • English lend and borrow. Two verbs. Lend takes the lender as subject and a bare Recipient or to. Borrow takes the borrower as subject and from. No English page is opened. The Dutch match of both verbs is lenen. The match of the bare Recipient and of to is aan or a bare indirect object. The match of from a person, on lenen, is van.
  • pożyczyć. One lemma, and the other human’s marker selects the direction: bare dative, or od plus genitive. A clause with neither does not show the direction. lenen is that kind of lemma. The Dutch markers are aan or a bare indirect object, and van. Dutch then adds uitlenen, which is lend-only, and ontlenen, whose aan is the source.
  • kölcsönad / kölcsönöz. kölcsönad is lender-side, with a dative, and kölcsön separates. kölcsönöz is one lemma: dative on the lend sense, ablative of a person or elative of a place on the borrow sense. uitlenen is the lend-only particle verb. lenen is the one-lemma verb. Dutch van does not split person and place the way the Hungarian cases do. bij of a bank or a library is a further printed phrase, unranked against van.
  • leihen, prêter, and prestar. German keeps both directions on one lemma by a reflexive dative plus von or bei. French has a converse lemma, and à is the Recipient of prêter and the Source of emprunter. Spanish is lender-side. Dutch lenen has no reflexive on the borrow frame. Dutch aan flips on ontlenen, not on the borrow sense of lenen.
  • одолжить and prestare. Lender-side verbs. The ordinary borrow expression is another verb, with у plus genitive or with da. Dutch does not need that second verb for the returnable thing. ontlenen is a derived verb, and its modern job in the whole language area is the abstract source, not the ordinary borrow frame.
  • 貸す and verhuren. Japanese prints lend and the paid reading on one lemma. Dutch prints lend on lenen and rent on verhuren / huren. The rent page records aan of the lessee from the 17th century in the WNT.
  • verkopen. The buyer is a bare indirect object or aan, the goods are the one object, and voor is the Price. lenen as read here is the temporary transfer. The same two Recipient cloths appear, and this page does not rank them. No voor-sum is printed as the price of lenen.
  • betalen. The object can be the money. The Recipient is a bare indirect object or aan, and the low ApplHAVE drawing is the one this page shares, as a working claim. On lenen a money object is the Theme.

Open items

  • tegen rente. Verschueren (1996), as quoted on Taaladvies.net, prints kosteloos of tegen rente in the give gloss of lenen. The WNT prints op interessen and op interest, and the borrow-side heading rente van te betalen. The uitlenen definition has al dan niet tegen een vergoeding. The ANW’s lener prints met rente on repayment. None of these is seated as a fourth argument beside Recipient and Theme. A numeral rate is not constructed.
  • aan versus a bare indirect object. Both are printed. Full DPs show no ending. They are not ranked. Ik leen hem het boek is constructed on the bare-object lines. It is not a cited sentence.
  • van versus bij. van is the person-source in the WNT definition and in the citations named above. bij de bank and bij een bibliotheek are printed. They are not ranked against van, and they are not stacked with it in one clause read here.
  • How often uitlenen leaves the Recipient out. The definitions put the person in parentheses or in aan iem. The short example De bibliotheek leent boeken uit has no person. Other lines name the person. No frequency count was read. The library compounds are in the WNT supplement. The WNT and Taaladvies.net print money.
  • The range of ontlenen. The modern aan-source lines read here have abstract or derived objects. A rights noun is not among them. Concrete borrow is WNT sense 1, obsolete in the Northern Netherlands, and Zuidn. in the served Van Dale 1950 line, which uses van iem. Taaladvies.net keeps a Belgian library reading, with in or bij the institution, and excludes money. The ANW articles for the three verbs have grammar and, for lenen, uitlenen, and ontlenen, no meaning profile.
  • Older source prepositions on ontlenen. The WNT prints van and uit beside the usual modern third-case phrase. Those older cloths are quoted with the senses they belong to. They are not ranked against modern aan.
  • Hij leent het boek uit. Constructed. The attested order is De bibliotheek leent boeken uit and the ANW cell leent uit. The participle with a Recipient is uitgeleend aan een vriend.
