A borrowing, on this reading, has a Borrower, a Theme, and a Source. The WNT’s sense II of leenen is De beschikking over iets krijgen, and sense II.1 is Iets voor zekeren tijd van een ander ten gebruike krijgen, te leen krijgen, om het daarna terug te geven. The return wording is the definition’s. This page quotes it and does not turn it into an aspect claim. The Borrower is the subject. The Theme is the direct object: koren, het boek, een paar wijnglazen, geld. Full noun phrases show no case ending. The Source is van plus a noun phrase, and a pronoun there is the object form: van uw' buurman, van Jan, van me, van u. Voice adds the Borrower. The root’s object is the Theme. van adds the Source. A stretch named voor zekeren tijd in that definition, and a purpose clause om plus infinitive, are optional. They are not ranked as further sisters of one flat verb.

What is different from English X borrows Y from Z. English uses one simple verb, and the source is from. A different English verb, lend, takes the other direction, with a bare recipient or to. Dutch uses lenen for both. The lemma does not set the direction. The phrase of the other person does. van is the Source, and the subject takes. aan, or a bare indirect object, is the Recipient, and the subject hands the thing over. The e-ANS files lenen and uitlenen with the verbs whose indirect object “denotes in general the person who receives something.” That indirect object is not the Source. English Wiktionary states the same split on the Dutch verb: borrow with van ‘from’, and a ditransitive, or an indirect object, to lend. No line opened here reads a bare indirect object as the person one borrows from. Mag ik je fiets even lenen? is woorden.org’s get sense. je there is the possessive of fiets. It is not an indirect object, and the line has no van. Kun je me dat even lenen? is WikiWoordenboek’s give sense. me is bare. Team Taaladvies, the Flemish service that answers the Taaltelefoon, prints the same bare pronoun on the give reading, De bank heeft me 1000 euro geleend, and prints a permission question with a possessive and no van on the get reading, Mijn zus mag elke zaterdag mijn auto lenen. A page that pairs the fiets sentence with an imperative leen mij was not in the advice that was opened. The imperative with a bare object pronoun is the shape of the WNT’s give line leent my drie brooden. Which phrase is the object when that bare indirect object sits beside the Theme is the note Causative templates and argument selection. This page does not edit that note.

The WNT, the e-ANS, Team Taaladvies, and woorden.org do not put a borrower, a thing, a van-source, and a bare indirect object in one clause of lenen. Sense II is the get frame. Sense I is the give frame of the same lemma. uitlenen is the give direction only. ontlenen is the other verb, and its modern aan is a source. Pat and Chris continue the named-participant series on lenen. A name does not spell case. van Chris is the preposition. The return wording in the definition is quoted and is not given an aspect label.

Marking map. Read the phrase of the other person, then the lemma. van before or after the Theme is the Source, and the subject takes. A bare indirect object, or aan, is the Recipient, and the subject hands the thing over. A possessive on the Theme, as in je fiets, is not that indirect object. English from matches van. English to, or the bare recipient of lend, matches aan and the bare indirect object. The lemma matches both English verbs.

Argument difference against English from, and against the lend filing of lenen. English borrow from uses a separative preposition on a different verb from lend to. Lend · lenen files aan and the bare indirect object as the Recipient. This page files van as the Source of the same lemma. A bare me does not replace van me. The possessive in je fiets does not either.

Working paper · October 2026 · Dutch micro-entry · Beyond Index 2

Borrowing in Dutch is lenen. The lemma is also the lend verb. The Borrower is the subject. The Theme is the direct object. The Source is van plus a noun phrase. A bare indirect object, or aan, is the Recipient of the other reading, not the Source. voor plus a time expression and om plus an infinitive are optional. uitlenen is lend-only. On ontlenen, aan marks the Source.

Working paper. Dutch micro-entry, seventh language of borrow. Frames were read in the WNT under leenen (M036570), in the e-ANS at 20.4.2 and 5.9.3.2.viii, on Team Taaladvies (the Flemish service that answers the Taaltelefoon), on Taaladvies.net of 12 May 2021, on woorden.org, on the Dutch and English Wiktionary entries lenen, and on the Dutch Wiktionary entries uitlenen and ontlenen. The ANW article lenen was opened for the grammatical block. It has no meaning profile. The lend markers are the ones already printed on lenen.
Constructed examples. Dictionary lines are marked as printed. Pat leent het boek van Chris and Pat leent het boek voor een week van Chris are marked constructed.
Arity. Index 2 does not list this verb. Surface count can name a borrower, a theme, a source, a time expression, and a purpose. The lexicon does not list five co-arguments of one flat V. Voice adds the subject. The root takes the Theme. van takes the Source of the borrower frame. A bare indirect object or aan takes the Recipient of the lender frame, on the same lemma. voor plus time and om plus infinitive are optional and are not filed as further sisters.
What this page does not do. It does not open an English page of borrow. It does not rewrite lend · lenen. It does not treat a bare indirect object as the Source. It does not treat van as the Recipient. It does not split lenen into two roots. It does not give uitlenen or ontlenen a page. It does not edit the note on causative templates.

Hierarchy

Not a flat grid of five sisters. Voice adds the subject. The root takes the Theme. van adds the Source of the borrower frame. A bare indirect object or aan adds the Recipient of the lender frame, on the same lemma. voor plus time and om plus infinitive stay optional.

What Dutch changes, against English borrow from, is the lemma and the source marker. English has one simple verb and from, and a different verb for the other direction. Dutch has lenen, and the Source is van. A bare pronoun is the Recipient of the other reading. It is not a second way to say from. What Dutch changes, against Japanese 借りる, is that the direction is a choice of phrase on one lemma. Japanese に versus から is a choice of Source marker on 借りる, and the Recipient’s に belongs to the other root. What Dutch changes, against French à, is that the source preposition is not the recipient preposition. aan on lenen is reserved for the lender frame. On ontlenen, that same aan is the source of a different verb.

Geometry · beside lenen, leihen, 借, and 借りる

  • Lend · lenen. The same lemma. The other person is aan or a bare indirect object. This page does not refile that phrase as a borrow argument.
  • Borrow · lenen. The subject of the get reading takes. The Theme is the direct object. The Source is van. English from covers that preposition. The role of the other person follows the phrase.
  • German · leihen. One lemma, and a reflexive dative on the borrow frame. The Dutch citations read here are not that reflexive. The German Source is von or bei. Dutch van matches von. Dutch bij is printed for a bank and is not ranked against van.
  • Mandarin · 借. One root. 向 or 跟 is the Source. 给 is the Recipient. A bare person is the split the Mandarin sources do not assign once. Dutch assigns the bare indirect object to the Recipient. van is what names the Source.
  • Japanese · 借りる. Two roots. に on 借りる is the Source, and に on 貸す is the Recipient. Switching van for a bare indirect object is the Dutch split, on one lemma.
  • French · emprunter. One ordinary simple verb. Source à, the Recipient preposition of prêter. Dutch does not reuse aan for the Source of lenen.
  • uitlenen and ontlenen. uitlenen is the give direction, and uit separates. ontlenen aan is the abstract source. Each stays a note on this page.
  • verhuren. Rent is a different lemma. The borrow lines read here do not print a fee as a co-argument. The paid reading is not a second borrow page.
