Source · von + dative, or bei + dative · the bank is bei der Bank where Duden prints it · the library on entleihen is aus, not bei

A borrowing, on this reading, has a Borrower, a Theme, and a Source. Voice adds the Borrower. The reflexive dative is co-indexed with that subject. Duden’s definition of sense 2 is asking something out of someone else’s possession, against the promise of return that the definition names. That wording is the definition’s. It is not an endpoint claim. The root’s object is the Theme, accusative. The Source is a prepositional phrase. A time expression and a purpose phrase are printed on neighbouring lines and are not ranked as arguments or as adjuncts. A rate, where a source prints one on leihen, is on the lend numeration. It is not in the borrow lines read here.

What is different from the English gloss. English borrow is a different verb from lend. The borrower is the subject of borrow. The lender is the subject of lend. English has no reflexive in borrow something from somebody. Duden, the WDG text that DWDS hosts, Langenscheidt, PONS, and Barron’s 501 German Verbs (fourth edition) print both directions on leihen. The borrow frame is sich (dative) plus the accusative Theme, with the source in von or bei. The lend frame, on the lend page, is jemandem etwas leihen: a dative that is not co-indexed with the subject. The reflexive is what selects the borrow reading on this lemma. Duden’s brackets and Langenscheidt’s parentheses print that reflexive as omissible. Barron’s relative das du von mir geliehen hast has von and no reflexive. Which phrase is the structural object is the note Causative templates and argument selection. This page does not edit that note.

Places · who wears which marking

No printed borrow line of leihen stacks the Borrower, the Theme, the Source, a time expression, a purpose, and a rate. WDG’s er lieh sich von, bei ihr ein Buch, fünf Mark has the reflexive, one of the two prepositions, and the Theme. Duden’s ich habe mir das Geld bei der Bank geliehen has the reflexive, the money, and bei. Langenscheidt’s ich habe (mir) ein Buch (von ihm) geliehen brackets the reflexive and the source. Duden’s [bis morgen] and Duden’s mit, zu 5 % Zinsen sit on the lend sense, with mir and ihm, not on sich.

Each row lines up one English slot with a German slot. The alignment type says what happens to the slot: = (same object status), or shift (a reflexive dative, or one German verb where English has two). Printed lines come first. Every other German sentence is constructed, modelled on a printed line. They show the working alignment, not frequency, and not a bilingual corpus.

Argument difference against the lend page. Lend · leihen files the subject as the Lender and the added person as a dative Recipient. This page files the subject as the Borrower. The added dative, when it is there, is sich or mir, co-indexed with that subject. The other person is not that dative. The other person is von or bei. English Pat lent Chris the book and Chris borrowed the book from Pat are two verbs. German can print both as leihen. Dropping sich does not leave a borrow sentence with a bare source. It leaves the lend frame, if a dative Recipient is present, or a line with only the Theme.

Strings below are constructed, modelled on the printed lines. They are not spontaneous-speech citations and not dictionary lines. Chris continues the named-participant series on leihen. Derivations · working sketches, revisable

Each sketch is a working drawing, not a locked analysis. The drawing gives the Borrower to Voice and the Theme to the root. The reflexive dative is co-indexed with the subject. The Source stays in von or bei. The lend drawing on the lend page gives the other person the dative and does not draw sich. Open one sketch at a time.

✓ er lieh sich von, bei ihr ein Buch, fünf Mark WDG

The subject and sich are one participant in that line. English borrow spells the participant once. Barron’s relative spells the German participant once, too: du and von mir, with no sich. The brackets on Duden’s [sich] print that omission. They do not move the Source into the dative.

The other dative · lend, on the same verb

No reflexive · the dative is a different person · working, revisable

[VoiceP Chris Voice ← Lender · not the Borrower

← von / bei unprinted on this frame

✓ er lieh ihm Geld, sein Fahrrad WDG · lend sense

This is the frame lend · leihen describes. The accusative can be the same money. The dative cannot be read as the source of a borrowing, because the sources put that source in von or bei. an + accusative is printed on ausleihen (ihm/an ihn) and is not printed on leihen.

Notes

Working paper · October 2026 · German micro-entry · Beyond Index 2

Borrowing in German is not a second lemma. The Borrower is the subject. A reflexive dative, sich or mir, is co-indexed with that subject and marks the Borrower as the one who receives the Theme. The Theme is accusative. The Source is von or bei plus dative. Plain jemandem etwas leihen is the lend frame of the same verb. entleihen prints von and, for the library, aus. Geld aufnehmen is the loan wording Duden prints beside the bank line.

DE micro-entry live Beyond Index 2 Duration and purpose unranked DE leihen lend live

Sense × language: borrow · German (leihen). The borrow frame is the page. Duden sense 3 (Hilfe, Stimme) stays off the frame. ausleihen, borgen, entleihen, and aufnehmen stay notes, only where an entry prints a frame. No English borrow hub. Geometry neighbor: lend · leihen, the other numeration of this lemma. Index 2 German Transfer cites tauschen; geben — not leihen.

Working paper. German-only micro-entry. Dictionary frames were read on Duden online (leihen, ausleihen, borgen, entleihen, aufnehmen), on DWDS (the WDG text of leihen, ausleihen, borgen, and aufnehmen, and the articles for entleihen), on Langenscheidt German–English (leihen, editorial examples), on PONS German–English (leihen and ausleihen), and on the leihen verb page of Barron’s 501 German Verbs, fourth edition, Henry Strutz, for the von mir line.
Constructed examples. Dictionary lines and the Barron’s sentence are marked as printed. Every other full clause is marked constructed. The string with ihm and no sich is the lend frame, not a rejected borrow line. bei plus a library is unprinted and is not constructed. A rate is not added to a borrow line that does not print one.
Arity. Index 2 does not list leihen. Surface count can name a borrower, a theme, a source, a time expression, and a purpose. The lexicon does not list five co-arguments of one flat V. Voice adds the Borrower. The reflexive dative points back at that subject. The root takes the Theme. von or bei takes the Source. A time expression and a purpose phrase are not filed as further sisters. A rate is not filed on this numeration, because the lines that print one are the lend lines. The perfect hat geliehen is the participle the grammars print. It is not an endpoint claim.
What this page does not do. It does not open an English page of borrow. It does not rewrite lend · leihen. It does not give ausleihen, borgen, entleihen, or aufnehmen a page of their own. It does not treat bei der Bank and aus der Bibliothek as one preposition. It does not treat the lend rate as a rate of the borrow frame.

Hierarchy

Not a flat grid of five sisters. Voice adds the Borrower. The reflexive dative is that same participant. The root takes the Theme. von or bei adds the Source. A time expression and a purpose phrase stay unranked. A rate stays on the lend numeration, where the dictionaries print it.

What German changes, against English borrow, is the lemma and the reflexive. English changes the verb when the subject is the one who receives the thing for a time. German keeps leihen and adds sich. What German changes, against a single from, is the pair von and bei, with the library on a different preposition of entleihen.

Geometry · beside leihen

  • Lend · leihen. The subject is the Lender. The other person is a dative Recipient: jemandem, ihm, mir when mir is not the subject. The Theme is accusative. an + accusative is unprinted on this lemma. Duration bis morgen and the rate mit, zu 5 % Zinsen are printed on that numeration. This page does not refile those as borrow arguments.
  • Borrow · the same leihen. The subject is the Borrower. sich is dative and co-indexed with the subject. The Source is von or bei. The Theme is the same accusative. English borrow has no reflexive and uses from for both the person and the institution.
  • ausleihen and borgen. Both directions again. ausleihen is separable (leiht aus, lieh aus, hat ausgeliehen) and prints ihm/an ihn on the lend direction only. borgen is marked veraltend and is weak (borgt, borgte, hat geborgt). WDG prints für ein paar Wochen and zur Hilfe on the borrow sense of ausleihen.
  • entleihen. Duden: von jemandem für sich leihen, and the library in aus. DWDS: von jmdm. for books or money, and aus der Staatsbibliothek. The article’s examples do not print sich. No register label is printed on the Duden page read.
  • Geld aufnehmen. Duden sense 8 defines it as borrowing money from someone and lists Geld, ein Darlehen, eine Hypothek, einen Kredit. The leihen parenthesis puts einen Kredit bei der Bank. No percent is in those lines. DWDS puts the mortgage auf a property.
  • vermieten and kaufen. Rent splits the direction onto vermieten and mieten, and a sum is für. Buy’s dative on kaufen is the beneficiary, and the seller dative is abkaufen. Neither dative is the reflexive source-split of leihen.

Open items

  • von against bei. Both are printed for a person. Duden prints bei for the bank. PONS prints only von on leihen. No entry ranks the two prepositions.
  • A library in bei. Not printed in the entries checked. The printed library phrase is aus on entleihen.
  • The reflexive brackets. WDG writes sich /Dat./ in the frame. Duden and Langenscheidt bracket it. Barron’s relative omits it. Omission is printed. It is not given an analysis beyond the co-index when the reflexive is present.
  • Duration and purpose on leihen itself. The borrow examples of leihen that were read do not print them. für ein paar Wochen and zur Hilfe are WDG ausleihen. für die Reise is inside Duden’s borgen theme. bis morgen is the lend line.
  • A rate on the borrow frame. Not in the editorial lines read. The printed rates are mit, zu 5 % Zinsen and zu Wucherzinsen, on the lend numeration. aufnehmen prints no percent.
  • sich on entleihen. The synonym row of leihen brackets it. The entleihen examples that were read do not fill it.
  • gegen Entgelt. Langenscheidt’s rent or hire gloss, including für das Wochenende. No numeral price on leihen.
