A lending, on this reading, has a Lender, a Recipient, and a Theme. A magyar nyelv értelmező szótára marks kölcsönad tárgyas ige and defines it as Visszaadás, visszatérítés kötelezettségével ideiglenes használatra ad; kölcsönöz. The return wording is the definition’s. This page quotes it and does not turn it into an aspect claim. The thing is accusative: Könyvet, pénzt, ruhát ad kölcsön, tíz forintot, a táskádat. The other person, where the line has one, is dative: neki in Kölcsönadtam neki tíz forintot. Wiktionary’s frame line is “to someone: -nak/-nek”, and the example puts nekem in parentheses: Kölcsönadod (nekem) a kocsidat? Voice adds the lender as the nominative subject. Low ApplHAVE introduces the Recipient inside that one verb domain and relates the Recipient to the Theme. The drawing is the same working claim as the Recipient of fizet and of English give-geometry pay, and it is revisable. Which theta role is the object in this low ApplHAVE domain is the note Causative templates and argument selection. This page does not edit that note.

Where the frame sits against the English gloss. English lend does not mean borrow. The lender is the subject. The recipient is a bare object (lend Chris the car) or a to-phrase (lend the car to Chris). kölcsönad matches the direction: the subject gives the thing, the thing is accusative, and the other person is one dative suffix. No line read here is a bare second object, and no line puts a preposition in the to slot. A kölcsönad clause with no dative is still that verb. Könyvet, pénzt, ruhát ad kölcsön and Minden pénzét kölcsönadta have the thing and no person. Polish pożyczyć is different on that point: one lemma covers both directions, and a clause with neither the dative nor od does not show which.

The lemma that does cover both directions is kölcsönöz. Értelmező sense 1 is tárgyas Kölcsönad. The examples are Kölcsönözz nekem tíz forintot and Krúdy’s barátomnak zongorát: dative, accusative theme. Sense 2 is tárgyas Kölcsönvesz. Könyvet kölcsönöz a könyvtárból has elative -ból of a place. A csizmát, amely a lábán van, mástól kölcsönözte has ablative mástól of a person. The lemma does not change. The dictionary still numbers the senses and glosses them with kölcsönad and kölcsönvesz. English from is one preposition for the person and for the place. The borrow sense of kölcsönöz prints two cases. Wiktionary lists the two directions of kölcsönöz as lend, synonym kölcsönad, and borrow, synonym kölcsönkér, and it does not print the cases. The cases are the Értelmező examples’.

kölcsön on kölcsönad is the piece that separates. Wiktionary’s etymology is kölcsön- + ad ‘to give’, and the conjugation note says the prefix can split: nem ad kölcsön, kölcsön is ad. The future cell prints kölcsön fog adni. Értelmező already writes it apart from the verb: ad kölcsön, Add kölcsön a táskádat, beside kölcsönadta and Kölcsönadtam written together. The appendix of Hungarian verbal prefixes marks kölcsön- DL, debated or limited, and lists kölcsönad, kölcsönkap, kölcsönkér, kölcsönvesz, related adverb kölcsön. The same appendix lists kölcsönöz among verbs that have no prefix, so no part separates. Its future cell is kölcsönözni fog, the infinitive plus fog, not a split kölcsön.

Places · who wears which marking

The Értelmező and Wiktionary do not put a lender, a recipient, a thing, and a source in one clause. kölcsönad is the lend verb. kölcsönöz sense 1 is the same direction. kölcsönöz sense 2 is the borrow direction of that lemma. kölcsönvesz and kölcsönkér are further lemmas. Pat and Chris continue the named-participant series on elad. A name does not spell case. Chrisnek is the dative, the ending that page uses. The return wording in the definitions is quoted and is not given an aspect label.

Each row lines up one English slot with its Hungarian slot. The alignment type says what happens to the slot: = (same status), shift (a bare English object or to ↔ a Hungarian dative; from ↔ ablative or elative), or one lemma where English uses two. Dictionary lines come first. The one constructed Hungarian sentence is modelled on a printed line. It shows the working alignment, not frequency, and not a bilingual corpus.

Examples

Argument difference. English lend does not mean borrow. Pat lent Chris the car and Pat borrowed the car from Chris are two verbs. The recipient of lend is a bare object or to. The source of borrow is from, for a person and for a place. kölcsönad is the lender-side verb: nominative subject, accusative theme, dative -nak/-nek when a person is named. It does not mean borrow. kölcsönöz is one lemma. Sense 1, glossed Kölcsönad, prints the dative. Sense 2, glossed Kölcsönvesz, prints ablative mástól of a person and elative a könyvtárból of a place. That case split is the divergence from English from, and it is the parallel to the dative versus od plus genitive on pożyczyć. The Hungarian dictionary still glosses the two senses with two other verbs. kölcsönvesz and kölcsönkér are those borrow lemmas. Wiktionary names -tól/-től on them. The examples read here do not fill it. kölcsön separates on kölcsönad. It is not a prefix of kölcsönöz. Rent is bérbe ad, unlike 貸す.

One lend verb · one lemma whose other party changes case · a prefix that separates only on the prefixed verbs

The case ending is an operation on a place the clause already has. A separated kölcsön is an operation on the verb’s prefix. Neither one adds a second English verb by itself.

Dative. The recipient of kölcsönad and of kölcsönöz sense 1 has no preposition. Értelmező prints neki, nekem, barátomnak. Wiktionary prints -nak/-nek. Chrisnek is the same dative, constructed. English spells the same role as a bare object or as to.

Ablative and elative on kölcsönöz. Sense 2 does not change the lemma. mástól is the person. a könyvtárból is the place. Wiktionary’s two glosses of kölcsönöz, lend and borrow, do not print those cases. The Értelmező numbering still glosses sense 2 as Kölcsönvesz. Polish leaves both directions on pożyczyć and uses one source preposition, od. Russian puts the source on занять. Italian puts da on prendere in prestito.

The prefix is kölcsön- on kölcsönad, kölcsönkér, and kölcsönvesz. Értelmező writes ad kölcsön and Add kölcsön. Wiktionary writes nem ad kölcsön, kölcsön is ad, and kölcsön fog adni, and for kölcsönkér nem kér kölcsön, kölcsön is kér, and kölcsön fog kérni. The future cell of kölcsönvesz prints kölcsön fog venni. The appendix lists those verbs under kölcsön- and lists kölcsönöz apart, as a verb with no prefix. Értelmező’s etymology is not the same shape either: Wiktionary derives kölcsönöz from kölcsön + -öz.

A kölcsönad line with no dative does not become borrow. Könyvet, pénzt, ruhát ad kölcsön is the lend entry. The borrow direction has its own sense of kölcsönöz, or the lemmas kölcsönvesz and kölcsönkér. That is the split pożyczyć does not make, and the split одолжить and prestare do make, each in its own way.

Derivations · working sketches, revisable

Each sketch is a working drawing, not a locked analysis. The point of the drawing is one accusative Theme, a Recipient that is a dative suffix, a Source on kölcsönöz that is ablative or elative, and a kölcsön that separates on kölcsönad and not on kölcsönöz. Open one sketch at a time. The low ApplHAVE claim is the same working claim as on pay and fizet, and it stays revisable.

English keeps the two directions on two verbs, and keeps person and place under from. kölcsönad keeps the lend direction. kölcsönöz keeps both directions and splits the borrow-side from into ablative and elative. kölcsönvesz and kölcsönkér are separate borrow lemmas. Rent stays on bérbe ad.

Sense × language: lend · Hungarian (kölcsönad). The returnable-theme sense is the page. The club-player subsense, the asterisked figurative sense of kölcsönöz, and the linguistic and joking senses of kölcsönvesz stay off that frame. Not given a page here: kölcsönvesz, kölcsönkér, kölcsönkap. No English lend hub. Geometry neighbors: lend · pożyczyć · lend · одолжить · lend · prestare · lend · 貸す · rent · bérbe ad · sell · elad · payGIVE · fizet. Working paper. Hungarian micro-entry. The frames were read in A magyar nyelv értelmező szótára (ertelmezo.oszk.hu) under kölcsönad, kölcsönöz, kölcsönvesz, and kölcsön. A search for kölcsönkér on that site returned no definition. English Wiktionary was read for kölcsönad, kölcsönöz, kölcsönvesz, kölcsönkér, kölcsön, kölcsön-, and Appendix: Hungarian verbal prefixes. The Recipient is a low ApplHAVE argument, a working claim shared with pay and give on this site, and it is revisable.
Constructed examples. Dictionary lines are marked as printed. Pat kölcsönadta Chrisnek a kocsit is marked constructed. No frame is starred. The entries do not print a rejection of a bare second object.
Arity. Index 2 does not list kölcsönad. Surface count can name a subject, a dative or an ablative or an elative, and a theme. The lexicon does not list four co-arguments of one flat V. Voice adds the subject. On the lend frame, low ApplHAVE adds the Recipient. The root takes the Theme. Ablative and elative are the Source of kölcsönöz sense 2. kölcsön is the prefix, not a further sister. kölcsönvesz and kölcsönkér are not second numerations of kölcsönad.
What this page does not do. It does not open kölcsönvesz, kölcsönkér, or kölcsönkap as pages. It does not open an English page of lend. The player subsense, the figurative sense, and the linguistic and joking senses stop at the non-transfer senses. The rent frames stay on bérbe ad. The Japanese frames stay on 貸す. The Polish one-lemma split stays on pożyczyć.

Hierarchy

Not a flat grid of four sisters, and not one verb that means both directions the way pożyczyć does. A flat grid would give kölcsönad two bare objects, or a to-phrase, or a borrow reading. kölcsönad shows one direct object, the Theme, and, where a person is named, one dative.

tíz forintot = one object. See the case sketch. The accusative noun kölcsönt is the loan as a thing named by the noun entry. It is not the theme of kölcsönad.

What Hungarian shows, against the English gloss, is where the direction lives. English uses lend or borrow. Lend takes a bare recipient or to. Borrow takes from. kölcsönad is lend, and the recipient is -nak/-nek. kölcsönöz uses one lemma for both, and the other party is dative, or ablative of a person, or elative of a place. -tól/-től and -ból/-ből are the divergence from from. They are different markers from the Recipient’s dative. kölcsönvesz and kölcsönkér are the other borrow expressions. Polish uses od on pożyczyć. Russian uses у on занять. Italian uses da on prendere in prestito.

Geometry · kölcsönad beside the live roots

In Kölcsönadtam neki tíz forintot, the speaker hands over the sum. In mástól kölcsönözte, the subject has taken the boots from someone else. The definitions name return. This page quotes that wording and does not add an aspect label.

  • English lend and borrow. Two verbs. Lend takes the lender as subject and a bare Recipient or to. Borrow takes the borrower as subject and from for the source, person or place. No English page is opened. The Hungarian match of lend is kölcsönad, and also kölcsönöz sense 1. The match of the bare Recipient and of to is one dative. The match of borrow … from a person, on kölcsönöz, is ablative. The match of from a place, on that sense, is elative.
  • pożyczyć. One lemma, and the other human’s marker selects the direction: bare dative, or od plus genitive. A clause with neither does not show the direction. kölcsönöz is the Hungarian lemma that prints both directions. The dictionary glosses them as Kölcsönad and Kölcsönvesz, and the borrow sense prints two cases. kölcsönad itself does not take the borrow reading. A dative-less line of kölcsönad stays lend.
  • одолжить / занять and prestare. Lexical or periphrastic splits. The lend frame has a dative recipient. The ordinary borrow expression is another verb, with у plus genitive or with da. kölcsönvesz and kölcsönkér are that kind of split. kölcsönöz is the split those languages do not make on the lend lemma.
  • leihen, prêter, and prestar. German keeps both directions on one lemma by a reflexive dative plus von or bei. French has a converse lemma, and à flips. Spanish is lender-side, and the borrow side is pedir prestado or tomar prestado. Hungarian kölcsönöz has no reflexive in the examples read here. The marker is the dative, the ablative, or the elative.
  • 貸す and bérbe ad. Japanese prints lend and the paid reading on one lemma, and the converse is 借りる, with に flipping role. Hungarian prints lend on kölcsönad and rent on bérbe ad / bérel. The rent page records no ablative of the lessor. This page records mástól on kölcsönöz.
  • elad. The buyer is a dative -nak/-nek, the goods are the one accusative, and -ért is the Price. kölcsönad as read here is the temporary transfer. The dative ending Chrisnek is the one that page uses. No -ért is printed on the lend examples.
  • fizet. The direct object is the money. -ért is Consideration. The Recipient is a dative, and the low ApplHAVE drawing is the one this page shares, as a working claim. On kölcsönad a money object is the Theme.

  • No Értelmező article for kölcsönkér. The search on ertelmezo.oszk.hu returned no definition. The noun entry’s kölcsönt kér is kölcsön in the accusative plus kér. It is not entered here as the prefixed verb.
  • Mikszáth’s rá. The citation sits under sense 1a of kölcsönöz. This page does not give rá a Recipient seat. The objectless example used here is Barátja szokott neki kölcsönözni.
  • Wiktionary’s split example of kölcsönvesz. The conjugation note prints a split whose verb is esz, not vesz. That example is not quoted. The future cell on the same page prints kölcsön fog venni. Értelmező sense 2 of kölcsönvesz, the linguistic sense, prints vettük kölcsön.
  • A focused object before a separated kölcsön. Unprinted for kölcsönad. No sentence is constructed. The printed splits are the imperative, the bare ad kölcsön, the negation, is, and fog.
  • idekölcsönöz, kikölcsönöz, odakölcsönöz, kölcsönkap. Named. Frames not read. Not pages.
  • Rate and duration. The noun entry lists kamatozó kölcsön and hosszú lejáratú kölcsön. No rate phrase and no duration phrase is printed on the verb examples of kölcsönad or kölcsönöz. They are not given seats.
  • Bare second object. Unprinted. Not starred. The entries do not print that judgment. The recipient they print is -nak/-nek.
  • Player, figurative, linguistic, and joking senses. Quoted above and kept off the returnable-theme frame. The asterisk on kölcsönöz sense 3 is the entry’s. This page does not add a label the entry does not print.
