ontstelen · bare indirect object + Theme · WNT onze ouders een paard · Van Dale 1950 iem. een kleinood

roven · Theme direct object · a third-case person is printed for a person or an abstract taken · a purse in that slot is unprinted

A theft, on this reading, has a Thief, a Victim, and a Theme. They are not three equal sisters of one Dutch verb. Voice adds the Thief. Low Appl introduces the Victim, as a possessor-source inside the verb’s domain: the person who had the thing and no longer has it. That is the same kind of added argument as the dative Victim on stehlen, the indirect Victim on robar, the dative Victim on voler, the у-phrase of украсть, the a-phrase of rubare, the の possessor of 盗む, the bare dative of kraść, and the ablative of rabol. It is a working drawing. It is not a settled analysis. The root’s complement is the Theme, the thing taken. Full noun phrases show no case ending. Pat and Chris continue the named-participant series on lenen.

What the ANW prints for stelen. Sense 1.0 is (Met betrekking tot stoffelijke zaken) geld of goed zonder weten van de eigenaar wegnemen met de bedoeling het zich onrechtmatig toe te eigenen. The syntactic class is overgankelijk en onovergankelijk. The conjugation is onregelmatig/sterk. The auxiliary of the perfect is hebben. The paradigm is steel, steelt, stelen, stal, stalen, stelend, gestolen. The object collocations are een bedrag stelen, geld stelen, 300 dollar stelen. The running lines fill that object and, where a place is named, uit: 50.000 dergelijke documenten uit de gemeentehuizen gestolen (De Standaard, 1997); geld uit de kleedkamer gestolen (NRC, 1993); 300 dollar […] hadden gestolen uit onze zakken (De Standaard, 1996); Uit een geldautomaat […] is […] een bedrag van 280.000 gulden gestolen (NRC, 1994). van 280.000 gulden is the amount of the sum. It is the modifier of een bedrag. toen hij haar tas probeerde te stelen (De Telegraaf, 12 juli 2001) puts a possessor on the Theme and prints no source phrase. 800.000 à 900.000 fietsen gestolen worden (NRC, 1993) promotes the Theme with worden. The value patterns are voor 480.000 frank aan materiaal stelen and voor duizenden guldens aan sigaretten stelen, and the running lines are werd voor 480.000 frank aan materiaal gestolen and Er werd voor duizenden guldens aan sigaretten en sigaren gestolen. That aan is the goods of the value phrase. It is the marking the ANW files under met voorzetselgroep. On lenen, aan is the Recipient. The synonyms listed under sense 1 are bietsen, gappen, jatten, ontvreemden, pikken, scheefslaan. Sense 1 prints no filled van plus a person and no bare indirect object beside a purse.

What is different from the English gloss, and from the German dative. English Wiktionary prints the source of steal in from (stolen from the gallery, stolen from us, They stole all my money (from me)). One English preposition covers the person and the place. stehlen prints a dative for the person. kraść prints a bare dative for the person and z plus genitive for the place. Dutch stelen prints uit for the container and for the place of the goods. Dutch Wiktionary’s theft sense is overgankelijk (misdaad) iets wegnemen van iemand en het zich wederrechtelijk toe-eigenen, and the example is Het bleek dat zijn mobieltje gestolen was door Ronald. van iemand is in the definition. The example fills the Theme and the agent door Ronald. woorden.org defines iets stiekem wegpakken dat van iemand anders is and prints Mijn portemonnee is uit mijn zak gestolen. dat van iemand anders is is a relative clause on the thing. uit mijn zak is the container. The Encyclo line on that page repeats the Wiktionary gloss, iets wegnemen van iemand en het zich wederrechtelijk toe-eigenen. The WNT’s literal third-case heading is Met een 3den nv. van den persoon: ontstelen, and the only citation under it is Houwaert, of dying misers: Zij gheuen den eenen (als zijt moeten deruen) Dat zij den anderen hebben ghestolen. The line is a third-case person. It is a purse neither in the object nor in the person.

What the WNT prints for stelen. STELEN I, modern lemma stelen, id M066399, published 1934, is onz., bedr. en wederk. st. ww.; stal, stalen, gestolen; soms in den verl. tijd ook zw.: steelde(n). STELEN II is the next article. It is a different lemma. Sense I is intransitive, Diefstal plegen: Gy en sult niet stelen (Statenb., Exod. 20, 15). The pairing Stelen en rooven is glossed as one secret and the other open and violent. Sense II.1.a, Met een zaak als object, prints Marin Geld, juweelen, kleeren steelen, Soo stal Rachel de Teraphim, and Wolff en Deken of er veel uit gestolen was, the uit of the zilverkas. The windows citation has yets gestoolen soude connen werden. The figurative subsection repeats the third-case heading and fills honor, nights, and time: Halma Iemand zijne eere of zijnen goeden naam steelen, Huygens Mijn Schelder steeltse my, Westerbaen Dat my een aerdsche meyt myn nachten steelen souw, Teirlinck Iemand zijn tijd stelen. Couperus, in the same figurative stretch, is mama's liefde gestolen had, gestolen van dien anderen man. The Theme is love. van dien anderen man is a person, and the line stays off the purse. Van Dale 1950, in the Ensie excerpt, begins I. (stal, heeft gestolen), 1. heimelijk wegnemen om zich wederrechtelijk toe te… The words after toe are not in the served text. Dutch Wiktionary files the theft verb as class 4, stal, gestolen, first attestation 1240 in the sense heimelijk wegnemen. A second stelen on that page, verbalization of steel, is weak steelde, gesteeld, and means destemming a fruit. That verb is kept off this frame.

What beroven and bestelen print. WNT BEROOVEN, id M007419, published 1899, is a weak transitive, Van Rooven. Heading A is Met een persoon als voorwerp; de thans gewone constructie. Sense 1 is Iemand iets doen verliezen door roof. The government sentence is Gewoonlijk met eene bepaling van eene zaak in den genitief (enkele malen door een accusatief vervangen), in de latere taal altijd omschreven met van. The genitive citation is Waerom soude ick oock uwer beyder berooft worden: worden promotes the person, and the genitive stays. The citation is loss of two people in one day. Under the same sentence the goods line is Haer van hare besittinge te berooven, beside die u van kinderen berooven sullen, die my van allen troost berooft, and Multatuli Arme lieden die men berooft van wat dienen moet tot onderhoud van hun leven. A place can be the object: te beroven die Stranden … van 't gunt… Sense 2 is the freer deprive use. Dutch Wiktionary, prefix be-, weak beroofde, beroofd, category Onscheidbaar, sense 1 is iemand met geweld zijn bezit ontnemen, example Zij werden plotseling aangevallen en beroofd van al hun bezittingen, glossed German berauben and English rob. Sense 2 is Hij beroofde zijn ouders van hun zondagsrust. woorden.org glosses iets stelen van and prints een bank beroven, with the synonym bestelen. The Encyclo line is iemand met geweld zijn bezit ontnemen and deze bank is al drie keer beroofd. zich van het leven beroven stays off the frame. The ANW article has grammar only: transitive, weak, hebben, beroofde, beroofd, and the notice that there is no meaning profile. Van Dale 1950, Ensie, serves (beroofde, heeft beroofd), 1. (iem.) door roof ontnemen, met geweld buiten liet… The (iem.) is visible. The remainder is not in the served text. WNT BESTELEN, id M007809, published 1900, is strong. Sense A.1, Met een persoon als voorwerp, prints Hij heeft mij bestolen voor eene waarde van ƒ 100, Langendijk deezen Heer … heeft bestoolen, and Van Lennep heeft hij je kas bestolen? The voor-phrase is a value, the same kind of measure as the ANW’s voor … aan …. Bestolen door zijn dienstboden is the participle, with the agent in door. Dutch Wiktionary, be-, Onscheidbaar, strong bestal, bestolen, is iemand ~ : iemand iets wederrechtelijk ontnemen, example Zij overvielen en bestalen mij, glossed English rob and Polish okraść. The Theme is named in the gloss and unfilled in the example. Van Dale 1950, Ensie, serves (bestal, heeft bestolen), iem. bestelen, van zijn eigendom… The person is the object, and van zijn eigendom is in the served fragment. The remainder is not served. The ANW has no article for bestelen.

What ontstelen and roven print. WNT ONTSTELEN II, id M046214, published 1892, is bedr., wederk. en onz. st. ww. Van Stelen met Ont-. ONTSTELEN I, the previous article, is destemming. Sense 1, Van stoffelijke zaken. Door stelen afhandig maken, prints Huygens Een Peerel is u hand ontfutselt, een Kleenood Ontstoolen and Bernagie Wy ontstaalen elk onze ouders een paard. The parents are a bare indirect object. The horse is the Theme. Sense 2, persons, is ontrooven: Bredero die my is laas, ontstolen. The person is the Theme. Sense 3, abstracts, prints Van Lennep den zegen aan zijn broeder ontstal. aan is the source, and the Theme is a blessing. Langendijk Jy ontsteelt my myn kostelyke tyd and Wolff en Deken ontstoolen dien man zo veel tyd are a bare indirect plus time. Iemand zijn hart ontstelen stays off the purse. One weak form is noted against ordinary use: De een ontsteelde u een uur. The reflexive zich ontstelen is sneaking away, marked obsolete. Dutch Wiktionary, prefix ont-, category Onscheidbaar, strong ontstal, ontstolen, glosses door stelen ontnemen and cites the WNT, with no theft example on the page. The weak cell ontsteelde, ontsteeld is the destem sense, De druiven worden ontsteeld. Van Dale 1950, Ensie, serves (ontstal, heeft ontstolen), door diefstal, op slinkse wijze ontnemen: iem. een kleinood… The double-object government is in the served fragment. WNT ROOVEN, id M061114, published 1920, is weak, roofde, geroofd. With a thing as object it prints Huber Onroerlijk goedt kan nog gestoolen nog gerooft worden, Sy roofden oock alle hare beesten, roofde tghelt, and Brandt Eenige ruiters roofden zyn twee paarden. The Theme is the object. The third-case heading prints Hooft my iemant van de mijnen te rooven and Multatuli Roofde 't lot my haar, and Sleeckx roofden hem schier de bezinning. Those third-case lines take a person or an abstract. A purse in that slot is unprinted. Dutch Wiktionary, first attestation 1130, defines the transitive as wrongful appropriation, often with some violence, and the intransitive as committing a roof, and names afroven, beroven, leegroven, ontroven, wegroven. The served page has no filled person phrase. Van Dale 1950, Ensie, serves sense I as (roofde, heeft geroofd), de korst (roof) van een wonde afnemen. That served line is the crust of a wound. Sense II is cut off. The theft frame of roven stays with the WNT. The ANW has no article for roven or for ontstelen.

jatten, gappen, and the names beside the articles. Dutch Wiktionary jatten is overgankelijk (Jiddisch-Hebreeuws), the same gloss iets wegnemen van iemand en het zich wederrechtelijk toe-eigenen, weak jatte, gejat, first attestation 1901. The example copies the phone line, zijn mobieltje gejat was door Ronald. A second line is een schuttinkje van een sloopwoning komen jatten. van there is a place, the demolition house. The ANW marks (informeel), transitive, weak, hebben, and prints no meaning profile and no example. The word-formation line is Conversierichting van substantief naar werkwoord. Van Dale 1950, Ensie, serves (jatte, heeft gejat), (diev., volkst.) gappen,… The register and the gloss gappen are visible. No government follows the comma in the served text. Dutch Wiktionary gappen is (Jiddisch-Hebreeuws) (informeel), the same gloss, example zijn mobieltje gegapt was door Ronald, weak gapte, gegapt, first attestation 1875. van iemand is named and unfilled. The ANW prints the paradigm gap, gapt, gapte, gegapt and no meaning profile. The Ensie article for gappen was not served. The hyponyms Dutch Wiktionary lists under stelen and leaves unopened here are afstelen, leegstelen, plunderen, rollen, wegstelen, zakkenrollen, and, under roven, afroven, leegroven, ontroven, wegroven. No theft government is quoted for them. Fixed expressions kept off the wallet frame include ANW iets of iemand kan iemand gestolen worden, stelen als de raven, om te stelen, iemands hart stelen, and de show stelen. The idiom dat kan me gestolen worden has an experiencer. That experiencer is the theft Victim in none of the purse lines.

Marking map. On stelen the Theme is the direct object and a container or a place, where the line fills one, is uit. A person beside that Theme is named as van iemand and as a WNT third case, and the purse examples leave both empty. On ontstelen the filled pair is a bare indirect plus a Theme. On beroven and bestelen the person is the direct object and the thing, where a line fills one, is van.

Each row lines up one English slot with a Dutch slot. The alignment type says what happens to the slot: = (same object status), or shift (a from-phrase ↔ uit, a bare indirect, or van). Printed dictionary lines come first. Every other Dutch sentence is constructed, modelled on a printed line. They show the working alignment, not frequency, and not a bilingual corpus.

Examples

Argument difference. English steal X from Y puts the Theme in the object and the source in from, whether Y is a person or a place. Dutch stelen puts the Theme in the direct object and a container or a place in uit. Wiktionary names the person as van iemand. The purse example zijn mobieltje gestolen was door Ronald does not fill it, and woorden.org puts the pocket in uit mijn zak. The WNT’s third-case person of stelen is headed ontstelen, and the literal citation is Houwaert’s misers. The filled bare indirect plus a concrete Theme is ontstelen: onze ouders een paard, and Van Dale’s iem. een kleinood. English rob Y of X puts the person or the place in the object and the thing in of. beroven and bestelen put that person in the direct object and the thing in van: beroofd van al hun bezittingen, WNT van hare besittinge, Van Dale van zijn eigendom. The WNT still records an older genitive, uwer beyder berooft worden, and says the later language always uses van. German berauben matches the direct Victim and spells the Theme as a bare genitive. German stehlen matches a direct Theme and spells the person as a dative. Polish kraść matches that dative, and a place is z plus genitive. Russian украсть spells the person with у plus genitive and a place with из plus genitive. Japanese 盗む spells the person with の and the place with から. Hungarian rabol spells the person with the ablative and a container with the elative of kilop. The possessor on haar tas is the nearer match to that の than to a Polish dative. The low Appl of the Victim stays inside the verb’s domain on the working drawing. On ontstelen the printed marking of that possessor is the bare indirect. On beroven the printed object is the person.

Senses kept off the wallet frame, and quoted so their objects are not reread as a purse. ANW sense 4 takes a kiss. Sense 5 takes a heart. Sense 6 takes the show. Couperus takes love, and that is the line with van dien anderen man. ontstelen of a blessing takes aan. roven of a person or of one’s senses is the third-case stretch. Destemming is the other stelen and the other ontstelen.

Wiktionary’s De druiven worden ontsteeld promotes the grapes of the destem sense. Nothing further is constructed. Which phrase is the structural object, once beroven makes the person the object, is the revisable note Causative templates and argument selection. This page does not edit that note.

What the entries print of the verb. ANW stelen is strong: steel, steelt, stal, stalen, stelend, gestolen, auxiliary hebben. The WNT adds that the past is sometimes weak, steelde(n). Dutch Wiktionary files class 4, stal, gestolen. Van Dale 1950, in the served fragment, prints (stal, heeft gestolen). beroven is weak: ANW and Wiktionary beroofde, beroofd, Van Dale heeft beroofd. roven is weak: WNT and Wiktionary roofde, geroofd, Van Dale heeft geroofd. ontstelen is strong in ordinary use: ontstal, ontstolen, Van Dale heeft ontstolen, with one weak ontsteelde noted in the WNT and with the destem cell weak on Wiktionary. bestelen is strong: bestal, bestolen, Van Dale heeft bestolen. jatten is weak: jatte, gejat, Van Dale heeft gejat. gappen is weak: gapte, gegapt. Wiktionary does not label stelen imperfective or perfective. Strong and weak here are the morphology the entries print. They are not a telicity claim.

Prefixes. stelen has no particle that separates. be- on beroven and on bestelen, and ont- on ontstelen, are written together in every finite cell the paradigms print, and Dutch Wiktionary files those three lemmas as Onscheidbaar. The treatment of a piece that does separate is the one on uitlenen, where the ANW prints leent uit beside uitgeleend. Nothing on the theft articles read here splits that way. afstelen, leegstelen, wegstelen, afroven, leegroven, ontroven, and wegroven are names. Their articles were not opened. A prefix is part of the lemma’s shape. It is not a fourth argument.

Derivations · working sketches, revisable

Each sketch is a working drawing, not a locked analysis. The drawing gives the Thief to Voice, the Victim to low Appl, and the Theme to the root. The Victim is a possessor-source inside the verb’s domain, analogous to the dative Victim on stehlen, to the indirect Victim on robar, to the dative Victim on voler, to the у-phrase of украсть, to the a-phrase of rubare, to the の possessor of 盗む, to the bare dative of kraść, and to the ablative of rabol. On stelen the purse lines print the Theme, and the person the gloss names is unfilled. On ontstelen the printed person beside a concrete Theme is the bare indirect. On beroven the object the example fills is the person, and the thing is van. The uit-phrase of a container is not that Victim head. Open one sketch at a time. Which phrase is the structural object, once beroven makes the person the object, is not settled here. Which theta role is the object is the revisable note Causative templates and argument selection. This page does not edit that note.

English Wiktionary’s steal lines put the source in from. Dutch uit mijn zak and uit de kleedkamer are the container. German ihm and Polish mi are the person in the dative. French lui, Spanish le, and Italian gli are that person as well. Russian у вора is that person in the genitive after у, and a place is из. Japanese メアリーの is that person as の on the Theme, and a place is から. Hungarian bankártól is that person in the ablative, and istállójából is the container. haar tas puts a possessor on the noun, the nearer match to の than to the Polish dative. German berauben, Italian derubare, Russian обокрасть, Polish okraść, and Hungarian meglop flip the Victim to the direct object. Dutch beroven and bestelen print that object. beroven spells the thing with van, where berauben spells a bare genitive.

On lenen the give reading prints aan or a bare indirect for the Recipient, and the borrow reading prints van for the person one gets the thing from. On stelen the filled place of the goods is uit, and the aan of aan materiaal is the goods of a value phrase. The bare indirect of a theft line is printed on ontstelen. On leren one frame puts the Learner in a bare indirect or in aan and the Content in the direct object. A Learner and a Victim are not one role. The analogy is the added argument.

Notes

Working paper · October 2026 · Dutch micro-entry · Beyond Index 2

Theft in Dutch is not one function frame copied from English from. Thief (Voice, subject), Victim (low Appl, a possessor-source inside the verb’s domain, working and revisable), Theme (complement of the root). On stelen the Theme is the direct object and a container is uit. A bare indirect beside a concrete Theme is printed on ontstelen. On beroven and bestelen the person is the direct object and the thing is van. English steal takes the source in from.

Sense × language: steal · Dutch (stelen). The theft sense is the page. Working paper. Dutch micro-entry of steal, beside the German, Spanish, French, Russian, Italian, Japanese, Polish, and Hungarian pages. Dictionary frames were checked in the WNT (STELEN I, BEROOVEN, ROOVEN, ONTSTELEN II, BESTELEN), in the ANW (stelen, and the grammar-only articles of beroven, jatten, and gappen), in Van Dale 1950 as the Ensie excerpts serve it, on woorden.org, and on Dutch Wiktionary.
Constructed examples. Dictionary lines are marked as printed. Every other full clause is marked constructed. Pat steelt de portemonnee follows the wallet, the money, and the phone. Pat steelt de portemonnee uit de zak and De portemonnee wordt uit de zak gestolen follow uit mijn zak and gestolen worden. Pat berooft Chris van zijn bezittingen follows van al hun bezittingen. Pat ontsteelt Chris een kleinood follows iem. een kleinood and onze ouders een paard. Pat heeft Chris bestolen follows Hij heeft mij bestolen. A van-person on the purse of stelen, a stacked person plus uit, and a purse as the van of beroven are unprinted and are not constructed.
Arity. Index 2 does not list stelen. Surface count can name a thief, a victim, and a thing taken. The lexicon does not list three co-arguments of one flat V, and it does not list one function frame for every line. Voice adds the Thief. Low Appl adds the Victim. The root takes the Theme. An uit-phrase is not a further sister of the wallet frame. be- and ont- are the lemma’s prefix, not a fourth argument.
What this page does not do. It does not open a separate page for beroven, ontstelen, bestelen, jatten, or gappen. It does not open an English page of steal. It does not give the purse examples of stelen a filled van iemand. That phrase is the gloss. The examples read here leave it empty.

Hierarchy

Not a flat grid of three sisters, and not one function frame copied from the English gloss. Voice adds the Thief. Low Appl adds the Victim, as a possessor-source inside the verb’s domain. The root takes the Theme. The function of those two dependents is the lemma’s. The drawing is working and revisable.

What Dutch changes, against English steal X from Y, is the split of person and place. The place of the goods, on the lines that fill one, is uit, in uit de kleedkamer, uit onze zakken, and uit mijn zak. The person beside a concrete Theme, on the line that fills one, is the bare indirect of ontstelen, in onze ouders een paard and iem. een kleinood. English spells both with from. The Theme stays the direct object on stelen, roven, and ontstelen. What beroven and bestelen change, against that object, is the person. The person is the direct object, and the thing is van. German berauben makes the same object flip and spells the Theme as a bare genitive. Polish okraść spells it with z. Italian derubare spells it with di. Hungarian meglop prints the accusative person and leaves the Theme out of the sense-1 example. The possessor on haar tas is the marking Japanese prints as の.
