Promiser, Promisee, Theme · Swedish marking · working claim, revisable
lova is a lexical verb. Svensk ordbok (SO), 2009 webbversion, prints two headwords. 1 lova is the sailing verb. 2 lova is weak, ~de ~t. Sense 1 is ge löfte om visst (önskvärt) handlande, with the cross-reference utlova. Sense 2 is praise, starkt berömma eller tacka, lova ngn/ngt, and SO marks the noun lov and the participle noun to that sense. Svenska Akademiens ordbok (SAOB), LOVA v. 2, published 1941, band 16, spalt L 1104, is weak -ade, and also prints an archaic or dialectal preterite -te and a supine -t. The article menu lists lova v. 1 and v. 3 beside v. 2. v. 1 is the sailing verb. v. 3 is the praise verb. Lexin, wordbase LSL4, files the verb under the value lovar. Lexeme 1 is ger löfte om, försäkrar, infinitive lova, preterite lovade, supine har lovat, and the perfect participle cell is a dash. Lexeme 2 is prisar, berömmer, style i religiöst språk. The head of this page is lexeme 1 and SO sense 1. Turkish söz vermek puts a noun in the object slot. Japanese 約束する is a verbal noun plus する. No telicity claim is made from the supine, from har lovat, or from SAOB Det har jag aldrig lovat.
The Promiser is the subject. A full noun shows no case ending. SO prints hon lovade att komma and han lovade dem hjälp. Lexin prints Jag lovar att komma!. SAOB prints Polismästaren lovade att inställa utkommenderandet av den ridande polisen and the oath formula Iag N. N. lofwar och swär … at iag. A pronoun in that place is the subject form jag, hon, han.
The Promisee, when a line fills a person, is a bare second nominal. There is no case ending on a full noun and no preposition on that nominal. SO’s construction line is lova (ngn) ngt/att+V/SATS. The example is han lovade dem hjälp. Lexin’s first grammatical line is ngn lovar ngn ngt/att+VERB/SATS. SAOB prints Lova ngn arbete, pängar, anställning, Lova en kvinna äktenskap, (obrottslig) trohet, Lova ngn att göra honom en tjänst, Lova mig nu att vara riktigt snäll!, Kellgren du loft mig ett portrait af Voltaire, and Runeberg du mig en slafvinna loft. en kvinna shows no case ending. dem and mig are object pronouns. In the printed lines the person stands before the thing. German versprechen spells a dative ending. Polish obiecać spells a bare dative. English promise can put to on that person. A verbal line of plain lova with till, åt, or för on the Promisee is unprinted in the entries opened.
The Promisee can be left out. SO puts parentheses on (ngn). SO prints hon lovade att komma and han lovade dyrt och heligt att höra av sig with no person. SAOB prints Lova att komma, att passa tiden and the Hellström line with no person. Lexin prints Jag lovar att komma! with no second ngn, beside a formula that writes the second ngn. Lexin’s second grammatical line is ngt lovar ngt. That line has no person.
The noun wears a different mark. SO löfte prints ett löfte (om ngt/att+V/SATS) (till ngn), ett löfte (till ngn) (att+V/SATS). till is the person. The printed examples are han gav löfte om att komma tillbaka and de tog löfte av henne att hon skulle höra av sig. av in that line is the person the promise is taken from. hon hade fått föräldrarnas löfte att fortsätta studera puts the promiser in the genitive föräldrarnas. A full clause that stacks till ngn on a printed example is unprinted. The formula prints till. The verb’s construction line does not.
åt is printed on the particle verb, and inside SAOB’s paraphrase of the neighbour. SAOB’s sense 1 gloss includes utlova (ngt åt ngn). That åt sits in the gloss. SO utlova prints utlova ngt/att+V/SATS, with no (ngn). The examples are vädertjänsten utlovade en varm sommar and regimen utlovade allmänna val. No person is in either line. SAOB LOVA BORT prints Åt denne man jag lofvat bort min dotter. The person is åt plus a noun. The theme is min dotter. The reflexive is jag har redan lofvat bort mig. SAOB LOVA UT is marked obsolete, loffwar … vth ath göra, and cross-refers UTLOVA.
The Theme, when the line names a thing, is one nominal. SO prints hjälp. SAOB prints arbete, pängar, anställning, äktenskap, trohet, ett portrait, en slafvinna, and Lova ngn guld och gröna skogar. Lexin’s idiom is lovar guld och gröna skogar, glossed ger frikostiga löften. In the double-object lines the person stands before the thing.
The pledged act, when it is an infinitive, takes att. SO prints hon lovade att komma, jag lovar och svär att aldrig göra så igen, and han lovade dyrt och heligt att höra av sig. Lexin prints Jag lovar att komma!. SAOB prints Lova att komma, att passa tiden, Lova ngn att göra honom en tjänst, att ge honom sitt stöd, att skänka honom en summa pängar, att ofta skriva till honom, Lova mig nu att vara riktigt snäll!, and the Hellström infinitive. The construction lines write att+V and att+VERB. SAOB says the sense is often with an infinitive as object, utfästa sig (att göra l. vara l. bliva ngt).
Control. Working claim, revisable. SO, Lexin, and SAOB do not use the word. In hon lovade att komma the one who comes is hon. In Jag lovar att komma! the one who comes is jag. In Lova mig nu att vara riktigt snäll! the imperative subject is the one who would be snäll, and mig is the Promisee. In Lova ngn att göra honom en tjänst the one who does the service is the promiser. honom belongs to göra. ngn is the Promisee. The ordinary pledge keeps the act with the Promiser.
A finite clause is in the construction line, and the printed finite lines are SAOB’s. SO and Lexin write SATS. The SO examples of sense 1 that were opened are infinitives, a nominal theme, or the asseveration. SAOB prints the oath Iag N. N. lofwar och swär … at iag. The at-clause has its own subject, iag. SAOB prints Månger loffuer för sin nödh, thet han håller icke för sin dödh. The thet-clause has its own subject, han. för sin nödh in that citation is not the Promisee. The finite complements in those citations are indicative. A subjunctive complement is unprinted. The older permission citation is a different infinitive: någrom manne loffwa till att jäga. till att there is leave to hunt. någrom manne is the historical form in that citation. The modern pledge examples are the bare ngn and the att-infinitive above.
Prospect, no Promisee in the weather lines. SO files a non-personal use under sense 1, ge hopp om, varsla om: juniorernas spel lovade gott för framtiden and det lovade att bli en vacker dag. Lexin prints hennes tredjeplats lovar gott för framtiden and the line ngt lovar ngt. SAOB sense 5 is gm sin beskaffenhet … ingiva förväntan, often with a thing as subject: Det lovar (inte) godt l. det bästa (för framtiden), Barometern lovade rägn, Skörden lofvar … att blifva god, Kellgren som lofvade at blifva en tröst, and Hellström Skogen, vilken lovade ge en rik avkastning. That Hellström infinitive is printed without att. The pledge infinitives above are printed with att. för framtiden in the gott lines is not a Promisee. No person who receives a pledge is in det lovade att bli en vacker dag or in Det lovar godt. One sense 5 citation does print a bare nominal of what the prospect concerns: som lofvade Sveriges andliga och materiella odling en glänsande framtid. SAOB’s definition of sense 5 also writes ställa (ngt) i utsikt för (ngn l. ngt). A för-phrase with a person is unprinted in the citations of that sense. The dictionaries do not use the word raising. Working claim, revisable: on det lovade att bli en vacker dag and on Skörden lofvar … att blifva god the subject is not a Promiser, the predicate of bli is about that subject, and there is no Promisee.
The asseveration is the same lemma and a different frame. SO prints det var kallt, det vill jag lova!, glossed with försäkra, starkt framhålla. Lexin’s idiom is Det vill jag lova!, defined Det kan jag försäkra!. SAOB sense 3 prints det vill jag lova and Jag vill lova, att det smattrade. The indirect object of that sense is marked numera knappast br.: Wii loffue tiigh att. That tiigh is not the Promisee of the three-place pledge in the modern examples.
Copular coercion. Working claim, revisable. The pledge and the prospect stay on the verb lova. SO sense 1, Lexin lexeme 1, and SAOB senses 1 and 5 are verb-built. det lovade att bli en vacker dag, lovar gott, and ngt lovar ngt are verb-built. The adjective is a separate word. SO lovande is som inger stora förhoppningar, and prints en mycket lovande författare and framtiden såg ljus och lovande ut. såg … ut is the verb of that second line. SAOB prints the participle as an adjective, En lovande ung man, and prints the copula var icke heller mycket lofvande. Framtiden är lovande reuses the SO noun and the adjective. It is constructed. himlen vare lovad! is SO sense 2, the praise verb, and Lexin prints Prisa och lova Gud! under lexeme 2. That vare is not the pledge coerced into vara. SO bunden prints den nya regeringen är bunden av den tidigare regeringens åtaganden and hon är starkt bunden till sin far, formula bunden (av/till/vid ngt/ngn). är bunden av is a printed copula. The complement in that line is åtaganden, the noun of åta sig. Hon är bunden av ett löfte reuses är bunden av and the noun löfte. It is constructed. SAOB sense 1 d prints the passive lofuat war for the archaic betrothal, Att hon androm manne … lofuat war, and Lofva mig Hedda din dotter till hustru. That passive is not a modern copula of the pledge. Lexin’s perfect-participle cell is a dash. A clause Det är lovat is unprinted. SO ord sense 4 prints hon gav sitt ord på att hon skulle hjälpa hans gamla mor. The light verb in that line is preterite gav. Hon har gett sitt ord reuses sitt ord and the perfect. It is constructed.
utlova is the neighbour SO cross-refers, and its construction has no Promisee slot. The SO examples name a summer and an election. SAOB’s paraphrase puts åt on that neighbour. The two records are both printed. They are not the bare double object of lova.
försäkra is not this frame. SO försäkra sense 1 prints han försäkrade dem att ryktena om honom var falska and han försäkrade på heder och samvete att fisken var nyfångad. The formula is försäkra (ngn) SATS, försäkra ngn om ngt/SATS. om is in the formula. An om plus nominal example, beyond that formula, is unprinted in the entry. Sense 2 is insurance, försäkra ngn/ngt (mot ngt). Lexin’s idiom of lova glosses the asseveration with försäkra. That gloss does not give försäkra the double object of lova.
åta sig and förplikta sig are reflexive, and they do not take the bare Promisee. SO åta sig is ta på sig ansvaret, formula åta sig ngt/att+V. The examples are advokaten ville inte åta sig fallet and hon åtog sig att se till att kallelse sändes ut. SO förplikta prints kommunerna förpliktas att sörja för åldringsvården, the reflexive företagen har förpliktat sig att investera 400 miljoner i broprojektet, and Rikedom förpliktar. The formula is förplikta (ngn att+V), förplikta (ngn till ngt/att+V). The ngn of non-reflexive förplikta is the one who is put under the duty. till there is the act, not the Promisee of lova.
SO ord sense 4 is försäkran: hålla (sitt) ord, de trodde honom på hans ord, and hon gav sitt ord på att hon skulle hjälpa hans gamla mor. på introduces the att-clause. honom in trodde honom på hans ord is the object of trodde. No bare Promisee is in the gav sitt ord line. SAOB’s reflexive lova sig (själv) ngt is a resolve, hon lovat sig att alltid lyda. Sense 4 lova sig ngt (av ngt) is an expectation, Jag lovar mig ganska mycket nöje av att se dem tillsammans. av there is the source. That sig is not the Promisee of the three-place pledge.
501 Swedish Verbs was not opened. No telicity claim is made.
Where this frame diverges from English promise. English promise her a book is one bare person and one thing, and English can also put to on the person. English promise to V puts to on the act, and promise that is the finite clause. Swedish han lovade dem hjälp and Lova en kvinna äktenskap put the person in a bare second nominal, with no case ending and no preposition. The noun löfte marks that person with till. åt is printed on lova bort, Åt denne man jag lofvat bort min dotter, and in SAOB’s paraphrase utlova (ngt åt ngn). One marker, att, introduces the controlled infinitive and the finite clause. The promiser does the ordinary infinitive, and mig in Lova mig nu att vara riktigt snäll does not. det lovade att bli en vacker dag and Det lovar godt have no Promisee. utlova has no (ngn) in the SO construction. åta sig and förplikta sig are reflexive. ge sitt ord takes på plus the clause.
