Promiser, Promisee, Theme · Hungarian marking · working claim, revisable

ígér. A magyar nyelv értelmező szótára heads the article ÍGÉR [í v. i] ige -t, -jen. Sense 1 is tárgyas: Ígér vmit. The kéziszótár heads it ígér ts ige. The Promiser is the nominative subject. The ordinary pledge line does not spell a nominative pronoun. The person is on the verb: Mit ígérsz? Spelled subjects are printed on the prospect lines: A határ, A nyár, Az új alkalmazott. No telicity claim is made.

The Promisee is dative, where a line fills it. The kéziszótár prints Ajándékot ígér neki. ÉrtSz prints the schema a kezét ígéri vkinek. neki is the third-person dative pronoun. vkinek is the dictionary’s slot for a person. A full lexical noun in -nak/-nek is unprinted. English Wiktionary, secondary, names the person as -nak/-nek. The sources do not say the dative is optional. It is absent from Ígéri, hogy elmegy, from azt ígérte, hogy …, from A nyár jó termést ígér, from Megfogadta, hogy többé nem dohányzik, and from Hűséget fogad. English promise her a book is one bare person and one thing. These lines write a dative, or no person. A bare person beside a bare thing is unprinted. No constructed bare pair is filed.

The Theme is one accusative, or a hogy-clause. Indefinite accusatives take the indefinite verb: Ajándékot ígér neki, Mit ígérsz?, A határ közepes termést ígér, A nyár jó termést ígér, sikert ígért, Móra sok esztendőt … ígért, Keveset ígér érte. A definite accusative takes the definite verb: a kezét ígéri vkinek, Ezt megígérhetem, azt ígérte, hogy …. Arany’s igérte is the old spelling of that definite past. The hogy-clause takes the definite verb, with or without azt: Ígéri, hogy elmegy, Esküvel ígéri, hogy megteszi, megígérem, hogy ezentúl nem teszem, Megfogadta, hogy többé nem dohányzik. Hungarian Wikipedia, “Általános és határozott igeragozás,” says the verb is in the definite conjugation when the object is a clause, and the example is A törpék nem tudják, hogy Hófehérke még fel fog ébredni. That page does not mention ígér. It does not mention an infinitive.

An infinitive Theme of ígér, megígér, and megfogad is unprinted. ÉrtSz and the kéziszótár do not give one. This page does not construct ígér plus an infinitive. The general infinitive rule, on another verb, is Durst Péter, Feladatok a határozott tárgyas ragozás gyakorlásához (kézirat, 2015): an infinitive with no object, or with an indefinite object, takes the indefinite conjugation, Szeretünk énekelni and Szeretünk zenét hallgatni; an infinitive with a definite object takes the definite conjugation, Szeretem ezt az autót vezetni. Those lines are szeret. They are not ígér. The cut is not shown on the promise verbs.

meg- is a preverb. ÉrtSz lists megígér under Igekötős igék. The article is MEGÍGÉR [g-í] tárgyas ige (rendsz. névmási tárggyal v. tárgyi mellékmondattal). The printed lines keep meg- on the stem: Megígéri, hogy …, megígérem, hogy ezentúl nem teszem, Ezt megígérhetem, végül megígérte, Mikszáth megígérem, hogy nem adom oda elolvasni senkinek. No dative and no infinitive are in that article. The kéziszótár did not serve megígér. English Wiktionary, secondary, says the prefix can split from the stem, nem ígér meg and meg is ígér, and prints the future meg fog ígérni. That future is the future of the promise verb. It is not an infinitive Theme. This page does not treat meg- as a claim about an endpoint. Wiktionary’s “completion-marking” wording is not adopted.

Control. Working claim, revisable. The sources do not use the word. In megígérem, hogy ezentúl nem teszem both verbs are first person singular. In Ígéri, hogy elmegy and Megfogadta, hogy többé nem dohányzik both are third person. Gárdonyi prints Megfogadtam, hogy nem veszek kártyát többé a kezembe: Megfogadtam is the same string in both conjugations, and veszek is first person. A hogy-clause whose subject is the dative person is unprinted. neki in Ajándékot ígér neki is the person who receives the gift. That line does not make neki the giver.

fogad and megfogad are the vow. The kéziszótár’s fogad sense 8 is Vminek a teljesítését (ünnepélyesen) biztosnak ígéri, and the line is Hűséget fogad. The accusative is indefinite, and the verb is the indefinite citation form. No dative is in that line. Sense 7, Szót fogad, is obeying. Sense 9 is the bet, Fogadjunk 1000 Ft-ba and melyik lóra fogadtál. That frame is fogad. This page does not redo it. ÉrtSz megfogad sense 3 is erősen felteszi magában, v. más(ok)nak ünnepélyesen megígéri. The definition names the dative más(ok)nak. The hogy examples do not fill it: Megfogadta, hogy többé nem dohányzik, Megfogadta, hogy elégtételt vesz a sértésért, the kéziszótár megfogadta, hogy többé nem iszik. megfogadta and Ambrus megfogadja, hogy örökre szakít a leánnyal are definite. Madách megfogadtad is the second-person singular definite past. The indefinite second person would be megfogadtál. Senses 1 and 2 of megfogad are hire and heeding advice. Sense 4 is the horse. They are not this vow. The ÉrtSz fogad article was not used for the vow.

ígérkezik is intransitive. ÉrtSz: tárgyatlan ige. There is no definite and indefinite split. Sense 1 is a promise to come: Holnapra hozzánk ígérkezett, A barátunk ide ígérkezett vacsorára, Kosztolányi Vasárnap délután hatra ígérkeztek. hozzánk is allative -hoz. holnapra, ötre, and hatra are sublative times. They are not a dative Promisee. The kéziszótár glosses the sense with Ígéri, hogy …. That Ígéri is the definition. It is not a complement of ígérkezik. The example is Ötre hozzánk ígérkezett. Sense 1a is a role in the dative: Kisegítőnek ígérkezett, vendégnek ígérkezve. Sense 3, archaic, prints infinitives on this intransitive verb: Jókai élni-halni ígérkeztek városukért. The kéziszótár does not print that infinitive. The conjugation split does not apply.

Raising. Unclear. No article opened prints a weather subject of ígér with an infinitive, and none uses the word raising. A weather infinitive was not found. This page does not say the reading is absent. The closest printed prospect is still transitive, with an accusative and no Promisee: A határ közepes termést ígér, A nyár jó termést ígér, A színdarab sikert ígért. English dark clouds promise rain is that noun Theme. English It promises to be an exciting few days is an infinitive. Hungarian does not print that infinitive on ígér. Jó termés ígérkezik is the intransitive prospect, with no Promisee and no infinitive.

Copular coercion. Working claim, revisable. The pledge is verb-built on ígér, megígér, megfogad, and fogad sense 8. The head is the verb. Sense 3 of ígér is also verb-built. The prospect is an accusative, termést, not an adjective. Looks-promising is verb-built on ígérkezik. ÉrtSz sense 2 is Vmi vmilyennek ígérkezik: A mérkőzés nehéznek ígérkezik, A termés jónak ígérkezik, A tárgyalások hosszúnak ígérkeznek, Mikszáth Vetés, fű szépnek ígérkezett. The kéziszótár prints Jónak ígérkezik a termés. The adjective is dative. It is not a copula van. That dative adjective is the copular coercion. ígéretes is an adjective, ÉrtSz melléknév, and the kéziszótár mn. The printed lines are attributive: Ígéretes diák, ígéretes költő, Ígéretes vers, ígéretes hang. Ígéretes hangja van is possessive van. It is not a copular clause. No zero-copula clause and no copular van were printed. A state-built clause of ígéretes is unprinted. The copula grammar was not opened. The flag for the pledge and for ígérkezik is verb-built.

Keep and break. The noun ígéret prints ígéretet tesz vkinek vmire in ÉrtSz, and ígéretet tesz vmire in the kéziszótár, with no vkinek. ÉrtSz prints ígéretét beváltja, megszegi, megtartja, teljesíti. The possessed noun is the object. The verbs are definite. No Promisee is in those lines.

Where this frame diverges from English promise. English promise her a book is one bare person and one thing, or to plus the person, and the act can be a to-infinitive. ígér writes the person in the dative, neki or vkinek, and the thing in the accusative. A hogy-clause selects the definite conjugation: Ígéri, hogy elmegy. The dative is often absent from that clause. An infinitive Theme of ígér is unprinted. Jónak ígérkezik a termés is a dative adjective on an intransitive verb, where English prints promises to be. Japanese に is the one-directional person on that page. Korean -에게 is the dative on the Korean page.

Places · who wears which marking

The Promiser is the nominative subject. The Promisee, when it is filled, is dative. The Theme is one accusative, or a hogy-clause. A definite accusative and a hogy-clause take the definite conjugation. An indefinite accusative takes the indefinite conjugation. An infinitive Theme of these verbs is unprinted. meg- is a preverb. ígérkezik takes a dative adjective. A bare second object is unprinted.
