обещать / пообещать. The commitment sense. Ozhegov and Shvedova, sense 1, label the verb сов. и несов., government что, с неопр. и с союзом «что», gloss “Дать (давать) обещание о чём-н.,” and print О. поддержку, Обещал прийти вовремя, and Обещал, что придёт. The same entry adds пообещать as сов. также, “к 1 знач.; разг.” Sense 2 is несов. only. Kuznetsov’s headword is св. и нсв. Sense 1, “с инф. или союзом что,” prints О. выучить уроки, О. подарить игрушку, and Обещай, что завтра пойдём в кино! Sense 2, кого-что, prints Мне обещают место бухгалтера, Обещал ребёнку новую игрушку, and Я обещал тебе в жёны мою дочь. Ushakov, sense 1, prints the government кому-чему, с инф. and the Pushkin line Сегодня быть он обещал, then кому-чему, с союзом "что" and Tolstoy’s Обещаю вам, что вы не будете нуждаться. Sense 2 is кого-что кому-чему: Batyushkov Мне обещают место в штатской службе, Lermontov Ему обещает полмира, а Францию только себе. The Small Academic Dictionary prints Garin-Mikhailovsky Касицкий и Тема обещали ему соблюдать вперед строгое молчание and Gorbatov Дяденька обещал вчера, что он поставит Павлика к станку, with Слово дал beside that clause. The Promiser is the nominative subject: Я in Kuznetsov’s Я обещал тебе, он in Pushkin, Касицкий и Тема, Дяденька. A null subject, Обещал прийти, is the same place.

Bare dative, and one accusative. The Promisee, where a line fills it, is a bare dative. There is no adposition on that person. мне, тебе, ему, вам, and the nouns ребёнку and, on сулить, сыну, are that case. Ushakov’s frame word is кому-чему. Ozhegov’s sense-1 formula prints что, the infinitive, and что, and does not print кому. The dative is in Ushakov’s government and in the filled lines of Kuznetsov, Ushakov, and the Small Academic Dictionary. The Theme, when it is a noun, is one accusative: поддержку, новую игрушку, мою дочь, полмира, место, Францию. Kuznetsov’s в жёны is a predicative on the daughter. It is not a second Promisee. A bare accusative person before the thing, the shape of English promise her a book, is unprinted. A preposition on the Promisee, the shape of Italian a, French à, or Spanish a, is unprinted on these commitment lines.

A bare infinitive, subject control, when the line is the pledge. Ozhegov prints Обещал прийти вовремя. Kuznetsov prints О. выучить уроки and О. подарить игрушку. Ushakov prints Pushkin Сегодня быть он обещал. The Small Academic Dictionary prints обещали ему соблюдать вперед строгое молчание. The infinitive has no marker. There is no к, no для, and no particle in the slot where Italian prints di, French de, German zu, and English to. In the Garin line the ones who are to keep silence are Касицкий и Тема, the nominative Promisers. ему is not the one who keeps silence. In Pushkin, он is the one who is to be there, and он is the subject of обещал. Я обещал ему прийти reuses Ozhegov’s прийти, Kuznetsov’s Я обещал, and the dative ему of the Garin line. It is constructed. The one who comes, on that line, is я.

что-clause. Ozhegov prints Обещал, что придёт. Kuznetsov prints Обещай, что завтра пойдём в кино! Ushakov prints Обещаю вам, что вы не будете нуждаться. вам is dative. вы is the subject of будете. The Small Academic Dictionary prints Gorbatov’s что он поставит Павлика к станку. придёт, пойдём, будете, and поставит are future. The entries opened here do not print a subjunctive in a что-clause of обещать. Russian has no subjunctive mood of that Romance kind to file. No mood split is filed.

The aspect pair, as the dictionaries label it. No telicity claim is made from the label. Ozhegov calls sense 1 both сов. and несов., and names пообещать as a further perfective of that sense, marked разг. Sense 2, the hope sense, is несов. Kuznetsov’s headword is св. и нсв., and sense 3 is только нсв. Ushakov marks senses 1 and 2 совер. и несовер. and sense 3 несовер. English Wiktionary enters обещать as imperfective, with perfective пообещать, and says the expectation sense does not use the perfective. Russian Wiktionary calls the verb двувидовой and says the sense “предвещать, внушать надежду” is used as an imperfective. The pages agree that the forecast sense is the imperfective. They do not agree on a single label for the pledge. The labels are recorded. They are not a claim about an endpoint.

A separate sense, to give reason to expect. The infinitive lines opened here print no Promisee. Ozhegov, sense 2, “Внушать надежду на что-н.,” prints День обещает быть ясным. Ushakov, sense 3, bookish, prints Korolenko День обещал быть теплым. Kuznetsov, sense 3, “только нсв.,” “что или с инф.,” prints Вечер обещает быть тёплым, Лето обещает богатый урожай, Он обещает стать крупным писателем, and Жизнь не обещала ничего хорошего. The Small Academic Dictionary prints Berezko День по всем признакам обещал быть превосходным — ясным, погожим and Chekhov не обещая ничего особенного. ясным, теплым, тёплым, превосходным, and погожим are instrumental. They are the predicate of быть. крупным писателем is the instrumental predicate of стать. День обещает быть жарким reuses Ozhegov’s День обещает быть and that instrumental predicate. жарким is unprinted in the entries opened here. The line is constructed. English promises to be takes an adjective with no case. The Russian predicate in the быть-complement is instrumental.

Control and the day line. Working claim, revisable. In the commitment infinitive, the understood subject is the Promiser. A dative Promisee can be there, and that Promisee is not the one who acts. обещали ему соблюдать is that pledge. In День обещает быть ясным, and in Korolenko’s День обещал быть теплым, and in Kuznetsov’s Вечер обещает быть тёплым, there is no Promisee, and the day or the evening is what is clear or warm. Nobody is pledged to. Kuznetsov’s Он обещает стать крупным писателем has a human subject and is still sense 3, the hope sense, not sense 1. The working claim is that these no-Promisee infinitives are a raising, forecast use: the matrix subject is the subject of быть or стать, and the verb does not report a pledge to a dative. The dictionaries do not use the word raising. They split the sense, and they mark the forecast sense imperfective. Ushakov’s sense-3 formula still writes кому-чему что и с инф. The filled dative on that sense, in the lines opened here, is Lermontov Погода прояснилась и обещала нам тихое утро, also the Russian Wiktionary’s sense-2 example, marked НКРЯ. нам is dative. тихое утро is accusative. That line has a Theme and a dative. It is not the быть-complement. The быть lines print no such dative.

обещаться. Ozhegov: сов. и несов. (разг.). То же, что обещать (в 1 знач.). О. приехать. A further perfective is пообещаться. Kuznetsov, colloquial, same as sense 1, prints Обещался приехать весной and Обещался сводить сына в цирк. The Small Academic Dictionary, colloquial, prints Pushkin обещалась ему подумать о его совете and A. N. Tolstoy Он обещался с первой оказией переправить в Питер. ему is dative. The one who is to think is Liza, the subject, not ему. Ushakov, sense 1, colloquial, prints L. Tolstoy Он обещался, что приедет к последнему акту. Sense 2 of Ushakov and of the Small Academic Dictionary is the plain or dated marriage vow, кому in Ushakov’s formula, Chekhov Любили мы друг друга, обещались. Russian Wiktionary splits the same way: colloquial, same as обещать; dated, to take a vow; dated and plain, to pledge marriage. The colloquial reflexive is the pledge with -ся. It is not a second-person Promisee of a gift. The marriage line has no gift Theme.

The light-verb noun, and сулить. The Small Academic Dictionary, under дать, lists Дать обещание (обещать) among the noun combinations that name the act. Ozhegov’s noun обещание prints Дать торжественное о. Ushakov’s noun prints Давать обещание. The Small Academic Dictionary’s formula дать слово {кому}, sense 2, is “пообещать кому-л. что-л.” The dative is in the formula. The thing is unfilled. No infinitive is printed in that formula. Pushkin, on the noun article, prints дав друг другу обещание вскоре снова увидеться. друг другу is the reciprocal. увидеться is the infinitive. Gorbatov’s Слово дал stands beside the что-clause of обещал. Дал ему слово прийти reuses дать слово {кому} and Ozhegov’s прийти. It is constructed. Kuznetsov’s сулить, sense 1, perfective посулить, government что кому, “с инф. или с придат. дополнит.,” gloss “Обещать дать или сделать что-л.,” prints С. сыну игрушку, Сулил прийти вечером, Никому не сулил много, and Сулил дать денег. сыну is dative. игрушку is accusative. The infinitive is bare. Sense 2, что кому, prints Это дело сулит много выгод, Ничто не сулило беды, and Все сулят ему блестящее будущее. English Wiktionary lists сулить as a synonym of both senses of обещать.

The participle sits on the Theme. Ozhegov’s header prints -ещанный, and the proverb Обещанного (сущ.) три года ждут. The Small Academic Dictionary prints Chekhov Это место мне уже давно обещано. место is the subject. мне is the dative Promisee. обещано is the passive participle. A passive that makes the Promisee the subject, the shape of English she was promised a new car, is unprinted.

Copular coercion. Working claim, revisable. The commitment sense is verb-built. The head is обещать, or the colloquial обещаться, or the light verb дать plus the noun обещание or слово. No entry opened here rebuilds that pledge as a copula plus an adjective of the Promiser. быть inside быть ясным, быть теплым, and быть тёплым belongs to the forecast infinitive. The matrix head is still обещать. The predicate of that быть is instrumental. Chekhov’s обещано is the participle of the verb, with the Theme as subject and the Promisee in the dative. связан обещанием is unprinted in the Ozhegov, Kuznetsov, Ushakov, and Small Academic Dictionary entries opened here. It is not filed as a frame of this verb.

Where this frame diverges from the English gloss, and from Italian promettere, French promettre, German versprechen, and Spanish prometer. English promise her a new car is a bare double object. Cambridge’s printed line of that order is Her parents promised her a new car. Russian Обещал ребёнку новую игрушку puts the person in the dative and the thing in one accusative. The dative is the case itself. There is no preposition, and there is no clitic doubling. German jemandem is the same bare dative. Italian a+DP, French à+DP, and Spanish a+DP are the prepositional Promisee, and Spanish doubles it with le. English also prints to. Russian does not. The infinitive is bare. Italian prints di, French de, German zu, and English to. The same bare infinitive of быть, with an instrumental predicate and no Promisee, is the forecast. English promises to be uses an adjective with no case. The Russian что-clause can stand with a dative, Обещаю вам, что, or without one in Ozhegov’s Обещал, что придёт. The Spanish page’s negated pledge takes the subjunctive. No such mood is printed here.

The Promiser is the nominative subject of the active commitment clause. The Promisee is a bare dative. The Theme is one accusative when the thing pledged is a noun. The bare infinitive and the что-clause are the propositional complement. On the commitment infinitive, the doer is the Promiser. Ozhegov’s day line has no Promisee, and the predicate is instrumental. обещаться is the colloquial pledge. сулить takes a dative and an accusative, or a bare infinitive.
