Promiser, Promisee, Theme, propositional complement · Spanish marking · working claim, revisable

prometer. The commitment sense. DLE transitive sense 1 is Obligarse a hacer, decir o dar algo, and that sense prints no clause. The Diccionario del estudiante prints the clause. Sense 1, “Contraer de palabra la obligación de dar o hacer (algo)”: Me prometió un regalo, Ha prometido venir mañana, and Se prometió a sí misma que no volvería a hacerlo. The Promiser is the subject. The Theme, when it is a noun, is one accusative: un regalo. The Promisee is the dative clitic me on that line. The same entry’s assurance sense prints te lo prometo.

Clitic and a+DP. Wikcionario prints Le prometió traer de su viaje a Estados Unidos un regalo: dative le, and no full noun beside it. The student dictionary prints the full noun with the clitic when the Promisee is the reflexive tonic: Se prometió a sí misma. a sí misma is a+DP. The Nueva gramática básica, §20.2.2, as the owe page already cites it, says an indirect object has the shape a plus a nominal and is doubled by a dative clitic, and that a tonic pronoun in that slot takes the clitic. le and les become se before a third-person accusative clitic. te lo prometo keeps te. Le prometió un regalo a María stacks the student dictionary’s gift with Wikcionario’s le and a full a+DP. It is constructed. Les prometió un regalo is the plural of that le. The lines cited here print me, te, le, and se. They do not print les. A bare person before the gift, the shape of English promise her a book, is unprinted. It is not filed.

Infinitive, subject control. Ha prometido venir mañana has no spelled Promisee. The one who comes is the Promiser. Le prometió traer de su viaje a Estados Unidos un regalo spells the Promisee and the infinitive together. The one who brings the gift is still the Promiser. le does not bring it. That is subject control. English promise prints the to-infinitive with no Promisee in the learner dictionaries, and builds I promised her to leave as a constructed line. Spanish Wikcionario prints the Promisee and the infinitive on one line.

que-clause. The affirmative lines are indicative. The RAE glossary of grammatical terms, verbo realizativo, prints Te prometo que iré, future indicative, and contrasts the report Te prometí que iría. The student dictionary prints conditional indicative in que no volvería a hacerlo, and imperfect indicative in prometo que no sabía nada. The Nueva gramática, online chapter “Los actos verbales,” §42.2x, prints Te prometo que el pasado no volverá a repetirse. The no there is inside the clause. It does not negate prometer. A usage consultation on El Castellano states the split the Academy lines do not spell: an affirmative pledge takes the indicative, Te prometo que el trabajo estará listo para el viernes, and negating the pledge takes the subjunctive, No te prometo que el trabajo esté listo para el miércoles. Those two consultation lines are not DLE citations. The infinitive is the same-subject complement prometer hacer. The que-clause is the finite complement, including when the lower subject is not the Promiser, as el trabajo and el pasado are not.

A separate sense, samples of what will be so. No Promisee. DLE sense 3: La película promete ser aburrida. The student dictionary, sense 3: La película promete ser interesante. ser sits inside the infinitive. The matrix head is promete. The intransitive line has no ser. DLE sense 4: El nuevo refresco de menta promete. Student dictionary sense 5: Esta chica promete como bailarina. La película promete, with no ser, and promete ser un éxito reuse those two patterns. They are constructed. éxito is not interesante or aburrida.

Copular coercion. The commitment sense is verb-built. The head is prometer. No copula builds it. In promete ser interesante, ser belongs to the infinitive, as be belongs to the infinitive in English promises to be. Estar comprometido/a is not a line of the prometer entry. The engagement the student dictionary does print is the pronominal verb plus con: Rosa se ha prometido con Carlos, and, on comprometer, se comprometió con ella. That is not estar plus an adjective.

Where this frame diverges from the English gloss. English promise her a book is the bare double object. Cambridge’s printed line of that order is promised her a new car. Spanish Me prometió un regalo puts the person in a dative clitic and the thing in one accusative. There is no second bare object. English to plus the Promisee is the other clothes. Spanish spells that person as a+DP when the noun is there, and the clitic doubles it, as in a sí misma. English learner dictionaries print the infinitive with no Promisee. Spanish prints Le prometió traer… un regalo, Promisee and infinitive together, and the Promiser is the one who brings it. The finite pledge is que plus indicative, not a that-clause that the cited lines drop. comprometerse a plus an infinitive, jurar, and dar su palabra de que are other frames, below.

Places · who wears which marking

The Promiser is the subject of the active clause. The Promisee is the dative clitic, and a+DP when a full noun is spelled. The Theme is one accusative DP. The infinitive and the que-clause are the propositional complement. On the infinitive, the doer is the Promiser. The promete ser sense has no Promisee.
