Promiser, Promisee, Theme · Dutch marking · working claim, revisable
beloven is a lexical verb. The Van Dale free dictionary, snapshot 20 January 2025, prints be·lo·ven (beloofde, heeft beloofd). Sense 1 is toezeggen: iem. iets beloven. Sense 2 is laten verwachten: het belooft mooi weer te worden, and the same entry prints (Nederland) dat belooft wat!, (België) dat belooft!. WikiWoordenboek files it as overgankelijk, toezeggen dat iets gedaan zal worden, weak, beloofde, beloofd. The WNT head is ww. (trans., refl., zw.), beloofde (zich), heeft (zich) beloofd. The ANW grammatical table prints overgankelijk, regelmatig/zwak, perfect auxiliary hebben, and no meaning profile. The lemma is in the Woordenlijst Nederlandse Taal, as WikiWoordenboek records. The head is a lexical verb. Turkish söz vermek puts a noun in the object slot. Japanese 約束する is a verbal noun plus する. No telicity claim is made from the perfect.
The Promiser is the subject. A full noun shows no case ending. A pronoun in that place is the subject form. WikiWoordenboek prints De man beloofde het meisje van alles and Hij beloofde de chauffeurs een gratis maaltijd. The WNT opens the transitive use with Met een persoon als onderwerp. ANS 18.5.4.19 calls that place the getalsonderwerp: ze in dat ze haar moeder beloofde een goede verpleegster te worden, hij in omdat hij beloofde het geld aan te zuiveren.
The Promisee, when a line fills a person, is a bare meewerkend voorwerp. ANS 20.4.2 lists beloven with the communicative verbs. The person is the one communicated with. ANS 20.4.1 says that constituent is a nominal phrase, or a prepositional phrase with aan. ANS 20.4.3.2 says the two forms often stand side by side, and that the aan-phrase can sit further right. The same section names verbs for which aan is excluded. beloven is not in that list. The printed verbal lines of beloven are bare. WikiWoordenboek has het meisje and de chauffeurs. woorden.org glosses (iemand) zeggen dat je zeker iets zult doen of geven, and the paraphrase inside another definition is zeggen dat je hem iets zult geven. The example is Ahmed heeft mij een horloge beloofd. The WNT formula is Iemand iets toezeggen, and the WNT calls the person a datiefbepaling. The citations fill haer, mij, me, and je: hy haer met eede beloofde te geven, Gij belooft mij, dat…, beloofde me goude bergen, ik beloof het je. ANS prints haar moeder. Taalportaal prints Peter, Els, and ons. A full noun shows no case ending. The modern pronoun is the object form hem, haar, mij, ons. There is no separate dative spelling of the kind German versprechen prints. The WNT label datiefbepaling is the historical name of that person. A verbal sentence of beloven with aan is unprinted in the entries opened. The noun prints it. Taalportaal has Maries belofte aan ons and de belofte van Marie aan ons. Ik beloof een horloge aan haar reuses the printed horloge, the printed pronoun haar, and the ANS alternation. It is constructed.
The Theme, when the line names a thing, is one direct object. Van Dale’s slot word is iets. WikiWoordenboek prints van alles and een gratis maaltijd. woorden.org prints een snoepje beloven and een horloge. The WNT prints goude bergen and het in ik beloof het je. In the printed lines the person stands before the thing: het meisje van alles, de chauffeurs een gratis maaltijd, mij een horloge.
The pledged act, when it is an infinitive, takes te. ANS 18.5.4.19: beloven and dreigen worden verbonden met een infinitief met te. The grammatical subject is also the implied subject of the infinitive. The speech-act line is Ik weet nog dat ze haar moeder beloofde een goede verpleegster te worden. The infinitive sits to the right of beloofde. omdat hij beloofde het geld aan te zuiveren is the same rightward place. Taalportaal prints an optional om on the control examples: Jan beloofde Peter [(om) niet te lachen], Jan beloofde Peter [(om) te komen], Jan beloofde Els [(om) de computer gebruiksklaar te maken]. ANS 18.5.4.19 prints te and does not print om on beloven.
Control. Working claim, revisable. ANS does not use the word. ANS states that the grammatical subject is the implied subject of the infinitive. In een goede verpleegster te worden the one who becomes the nurse is ze, and haar moeder is the Promisee. In het geld aan te zuiveren the one who would settle the money is hij. Taalportaal calls beloven subject control in the ordinary lines. Jan beloofde Peter niet te lachen: Jan does not laugh. The index on Peter is starred. Jan beloofde Peter te komen: Jan comes. Jan verzocht Peter niet te lachen is the reverse: Peter does not laugh. Jan vroeg (aan) Peter [(om) de boodschappen te doen]: Peter does the shopping, and aan is printed as optional on vragen. Taalportaal files dwingen (tot) with the object-control prepositional-object verbs, and says that leaving out that object is less felicitous. A full dwingen sentence is unprinted in the section opened. The same Taalportaal section prints a shift on beloven: Jan beloofde Peter [(om) te mogen komen], and the index sits on Peter. The ordinary illocution, as Taalportaal states it, is committing oneself to the act. mogen leaves a permission implicit and reverses the indices. The ordinary pledge keeps the act with the Promiser. The mogen line is a printed shift. It is the vragen direction, on a different complement.
Verb cluster and extraposition. ANS 18.5.4.19 ties groepsvormend use to the meaning. Reading [a] is not used in the perfect. Reading [b] also clusters for some speakers: omdat hij het geld beloofde aan te zuiveren beside omdat hij beloofde het geld aan te zuiveren. The perfect of that cluster uses the participle, not a substitute infinitive. ANS calls that quasi-groepsvormend: hij het geld beloofd had aan te zuiveren is printed, and hij het geld had beloven aan te zuiveren is marked uitgesloten. The labels are the cluster facts ANS prints. No telicity claim is made from the perfect.
A dat-clause is printed with and without a Promisee. The WNT citation is Gij belooft mij, dat gij mij voor de gevolgen zult vrijwaren, future zult, with mij. WikiWoordenboek prints beloofde de jongen dat hij in de herfst … naar het paleis van Sinterklaas zou komen, with zou and with no Promisee in the line. woorden.org prints beloven dat je de afwas zult doen. The printed finite complements are indicative. A subjunctive complement is unprinted.
Looks-likely reading, no Promisee. Van Dale sense 2 is laten verwachten, and the example is het belooft mooi weer te worden. woorden.org prints Het belooft een mooie dag te worden, glossed Het zal vandaag vast mooi weer worden. No Promisee is in either line. Het is not a person who speaks a pledge. Taaladvies.net prints Dat belooft! as standard in Belgium and Dat belooft wat! as standard in the Netherlands, and calls wat the direct object that the Netherlands line keeps. The WNT sense with a thing as subject is Iets doen verwachten: Dat belooft wat!, de abrikoos beloofde veel, De grond beloofde niets, die heel wat beloofde. Those WNT lines have a direct object and no te-infinitive, and no Promisee. ANS reading [a] is the same meaning shift, Het ziet ernaar uit, and the ANS illustration still has a human subject, Zij belooft een goede verpleegster te worden, which the grammar says is ambiguous with the speech-act reading. ANS says the grammatical subject is the implied subject of the infinitive in both readings. ANS does not use the word raising. Working claim, revisable: on Het belooft een mooie dag te worden the subject is not a Promiser, the day is the predicate of worden, and there is no Promisee. That is the raising, evidential reading. Reading [a] is the one ANS makes obligatorily groepsvormend, and the one ANS keeps out of the perfect.
Copular coercion. Working claim, revisable. The pledge and the looks-likely reading stay on the verb beloven. Van Dale sense 1 and sense 2, ANS readings [b] and [a], and the WNT thing-subject lines are verb-built. Onze Taal prints the active perfect Maar je had het nog zo beloofd!, with hebben, and the worden-passive Dat werd ons nog zo beloofd!. The theme Dat is the subject. The Promisee ons stays. Taalportaal prints the impersonal passive Er werd Els beloofd [(om) de computer gebruiksklaar te maken], and Er werd ons door Marie beloofd [(om) de auto te repareren], and Er werd ons beloofd with the door-phrase left out. The Promisee stays. The door-phrase, when it is there, is the one who repairs the car. WikiWoordenboek’s conjugation table prints the zijn-passive cells is beloofd, er is beloofd, and beloofd te zijn. Those cells are morphology. A clause Het is beloofd is unprinted. It reuses the cell. It is constructed. woorden.org prints the proverb Beloofd is beloofd. The WNT prints the participle as attributive: syne beloofde pacht, Eene beloofde uitgave, Het beloofde land. The same WNT citation prints a legal obligation on wezen: sal gehouden wesen alle maenden te betalen, beside beloofde pacht. WikiWoordenboek gehouden sense 2 is verplicht zijn, with no complement in the entry. Taaladvies.net glosses verplicht with waartoe men gehouden is, and prints the copula De lessen zijn verplicht and Ik ben hem veel verplicht. A clause gehouden zijn aan is unprinted. The adjective veelbelovend is iets of iemand waarvan men in de toekomst veel goeds mag verwachten. The WNT lists Veelbelovend as a derivative of beloven. The lemma is in the Woordenlijst. A copular clause is veelbelovend is unprinted. Zij is veelbelovend reuses the adjective and the copula. It is constructed. Ik ben hem veel verplicht is a printed copula. The state is obligation, or a debt of gratitude. It is not the pledge of beloven coerced into zijn.
toezeggen is the formal pledge, and it is a separate particle verb. WikiWoordenboek labels it ditransitief and (formeel) als belofte verklaren, synonyms beloven, verzeggen. The visible opening of the 1950 Van Dale article, as Ensie reproduces it, is min of meer plechtig beloven. The particle separates: zegde/zei toe, heeft toegezegd. Hij had toegezegd deze verandering te zullen ondersteunen is a te-infinitive, with no person in the line. De toenmalige premier Elio Di Rupo had de 82-jarige oud-vorst destijds 1,4 miljoen euro toegezegd is a bare person and a sum. Zij hadden dat niet toegezegd gekregen promotes the theme with krijgen. woorden.org prints een bedrag van duizend euro toezeggen and ze hebben toegezegd dat ze zullen tekenen. Taalportaal lists toezeggen with beloven among the ditransitive subject-control verbs, and names the passive string er werd/is toegezegd om. An aan-phrase of toezeggen is unprinted in the entries opened.
zich verbinden is not this frame. WikiWoordenboek files the reflexive as zich ~ tot, een dwingende verplichting aangaan, and prints Hij weigerde zich ertoe te verbinden. Woordcombinaties glosses that tot as zich verplichten tot, and prints U verbindt zich ertoe deze instructies op te volgen. The nominal act is tot plus a noun: betaling, geheimhouding. The clitic is zich. The anticipatory er resumes toe. There is no bare Promisee in those lines. Non-reflexive verplichten is a different frame again. WikiWoordenboek prints Dat verplicht je tot niets: the person is the direct object je, and the act is tot plus a noun. Taalportaal files verplichten (tot) with the object-control verbs. A reflexive zich verplichten sentence is unprinted in the entries opened. The Woordcombinaties gloss equates it with zich verbinden tot.
zweren is the oath. ANS 20.4.2 lists it with the communicative verbs that take a meewerkend voorwerp, in the same list as beloven. WikiWoordenboek prints Hij zwoer een eed op de grondwet: the oath is the direct object, and op marks what is sworn on. No Promisee is in that line. The WNT citation hy haer met eede beloofde te geven puts the oath in met on beloven, and keeps haer as the person of beloven.
The WNT reflexive Zich (datief) iets beloven is a hope, glossed zich vleien met de hoop: die zich een lang leven beloofde. Zich veel van iets beloven is er veel voldoening van verwachten. That zich is not the Promisee of the three-place pledge. German sich etwas von etwas versprechen, on the German page, is the same split.
The public Van Dale free dictionary was no longer served at vandale.nl when this page was written. The senses used here are the 20 January 2025 snapshot. The 1950 Van Dale article for toezeggen was read only as far as the visible Ensie opening. 501 Dutch Verbs was not opened. Taaltelefoon was not opened. No telicity claim is made.
Where this frame diverges from English promise. English promise her a new car is one bare person and one thing, or to plus the person. English promise to V puts to on the act, and the promiser does the act. Dutch puts the person in a bare meewerkend voorwerp. A full noun shows no case ending. The pronoun is hem or haar. ANS states an aan alternation for that function, and the noun belofte prints aan. The pledge infinitive takes te, and the ordinary reading keeps the act with the promiser. vragen and verzoeken give the act to the other person, and Taalportaal files dwingen (tot) with those object-control verbs. The looks-likely line Het belooft een mooie dag te worden has no Promisee. ANS reading [a] of that meaning must form a verb cluster, and ANS keeps it out of the perfect. The speech-act te-infinitive is in general extraposed, and a perfect cluster uses the participle beloofd, not the substitute infinitive beloven.
