Promiser, Promisee, Theme · Polish marking · working claim, revisable
obiecać and obiecywać are one aspect pair. WSJP files obiecać as aspekt: dokonany and names obiecywać as odpowiednik aspektowy. The definition is powiedzieć do kogoś, że w przyszłości wykona się wskazaną czynność. The synonym label is przyobiecać. WSJP sense 1 of obiecywać, gloss przyrzekać, is aspekt: niedokonany, definition mówić do kogoś, że w przyszłości wykona się wskazaną czynność. Słownik języka polskiego PWN prints the pair as obiecać — obiecywać. Sense 1 is zapewnić kogoś, że się coś zrobi, załatwi, da coś itp. Sense 2 is stanowić zapowiedź czegoś dobrego lub przyjemnego. PWN prints no case label. The accusative kogoś belongs to the gloss verb zapewnić. It is not a printed accusative Promisee of obiecać. The head is a lexical verb. Turkish söz vermek puts a noun in the object slot. Japanese 約束する is a verbal noun plus する. The labels dokonany and niedokonany are the morphology WSJP prints. No telicity claim is made from them.
The Promiser is the nominative subject. WSJP prints strażacy obiecali nagrodę, Oba kraje obiecały pomóc, musi mi pani obiecać, and obiecała babcia. The ending can stand without a spelled noun: Jeśli coś obieca.
The Promisee, when a line fills a person, is a bare dative. There is no preposition on that person. WSJP’s slot is (KOMU). The collocations are people: mamie, matce, ojcu, (Panu) Bogu, dziewczynie, kibicom, ludziom, mieszkańcom, nauczycielom, piłkarzom, Polakom, pracownikom, społeczeństwu, wyborcom, związkowcom, and, on obiecywać, rodzicom, czytelnikowi, klientom, obywatelom, szefowi, Niemcom. The citations fill każdemu, mi, jej, and Tomaszowi. English promise her is a bare person, or to plus the person. Russian обещать also takes a bare dative, кому, with no adposition. On that page Ushakov’s frame word is кому-чему, so the dative can be a thing, and Ozhegov’s sense-1 formula prints no кому. WSJP writes the slot KOMU and fills it with people. A dative thing in the Promisee slot is unprinted on the WSJP entries opened here.
The Theme, when the line names a thing, is the accusative slot CO. WSJP’s collocations include dotację, nagrodę, pieniądze, podwyżkę, prezent, samochód, pomoc, posadę, and małżeństwo on Obiecywał jej małżeństwo. strażacy obiecali nagrodę każdemu puts the accusative before the dative. Jeśli coś obieca, to dotrzyma słowa has coś as the accusative of obiecać. słowa is the genitive of dotrzymać. It is not the theme of obiecać.
Genitive under nie. A genitive theme of the commitment frame under nie is unprinted. nie obiecał mu pomocy is not a line in the entries opened. The printed genitive under nie is on the inanimate sense: Dyskusja trwała, ale nie obiecywała wyników. wyników is genitive. The accusative plural of that noun is wyniki. No dative is in the line. WSJP does not label that form dopełniacz negacji. The published Walenty account marks a non-subject structural case as accusative, or as genitive under negation or with the gerund, and illustrates that on bajdurzyć: Ktoś bajdurzy coś komuś beside Ktoś nie bajdurzy czegoś komuś (Przepiórkowski, Hajnicz, Andrzejczuk, Patejuk, and Woliński, Język Polski, the article dated early December 2016). The same article says the genitive of negation does not hit every accusative. That illustration is not a schema of obiecać. It is not transferred here.
The pledged act, when it is an infinitive, is bare. There is no do, no żeby, and no English to on that infinitive. WSJP’s slot is (KOMU) + BEZOKOLICZNIK. The citation obiecywał przerobić wszystkie lampy naftowe na elektryczne has no dative in the string. Oba kraje obiecały pomóc Armenii has a bare infinitive pomóc. Armenii is the dative of pomóc. It is not a Promisee of obiecać. The published Walenty schema is subj, controller{np(str)} + {np(dat)} + controllee{infp(_)} (Przepiórkowski, Hajnicz, Patejuk, Woliński, Skwarski, and Świdziński, “Walenty: Towards a comprehensive valence dictionary of Polish,” 2014). The example there is Janek obiecał Tomkowi przyjść: Janek comes. The Język Polski article prints Janek obiecał Marysi przeczytać gazetę: Janek reads. Janek obiecał Marysi być miłym / *miłą: the masculine agrees with Janek, and the feminine is starred. kazać is the reverse schema, subj{np(str)} + controller{np(dat)} + controllee{infp(_)}: Janek kazał Marysi przeczytać gazetę, and być miłą / *miłym. No WSJP citation of obiecać prints KOMU and the infinitive in one string. The papers do.
Control. Working claim, revisable. WSJP does not use the word. Walenty does: the controller of obiecać is the structural subject, and the controller of kazać is the dative. In przerobić the one who would convert the lamps is the subject of obiecywał. In pojedzie the traveller is the subject of obiecywała, and Tomaszowi is the Promisee. Object control of obiecać is the kazać frame, not this one.
A że-clause is the slot (KOMU) + że ZDANIE. WSJP prints Najpierw musi mi pani obiecać, że będzie pani dla mnie miła i dobra, future będzie, with dative mi. obiecywała Tomaszowi, że pojedzie tam, jak dorośnie is future pojedzie. Czy obiecuje mi pan, że nie będzie usiłował więcej spotykać się z Renią? is future będzie under nie. The printed że-clauses of this verb are future indicative. żeby is unprinted on obiecać. Direct speech is its own row, (KOMU) + MOWA WPROST: Przyjdziemy razem - obiecała babcia. In Pokażę ci naszą stolicę - obiecywała, ci is the dative inside the quote, of pokazać, not of obiecywać.
Inanimate subject, attested. WSJP sense 2 of obiecywać, gloss rokować, is być takim, że ktoś może się spodziewać w związku z tym określonych zdarzeń lub zaistnienia określonych stanów rzeczy. The collocation list prints zapowiadać się obiecująco. This verb is not obiecywać.
Copular coercion. Working claim, revisable. The prospect stays on the verb obiecywać: obiecywały wygodne schronienie, nie obiecywała wyników, obiecuje człowiekowi łatwą przyjemność. That is verb-built. The adjective obiecujący, sense 1, is taki, po którym można się spodziewać sukcesu w przyszłości. The copula is printed: Możliwości rozwoju energetyki wiatrowej w Polsce są obiecujące. Attributive lines are printed too: wyjątkowo obiecującą … branżę, bardzo obiecujące rezultaty, najbardziej obiecujący aktor. PWN’s adjective is sense 1 dobrze się zapowiadający, with the adverb obiecująco. wiele obiecujący is a spelling note on that PWN page. PWN sense 2, o uśmiechu, spojrzeniu itp.: wymowny, zalotny, is a different state. It is not the pledge coerced into an is-statement. The active participle obiecujący in the WSJP conjugation table of the verb is morphology. It is a separate entry from the adjective. The passive participle obiecany is in the paradigm of obiecać, and the collocation is attributive obiecany list. The phraseology is ziemia obiecana. PWN’s spelling note Ziemia Obiecana is a name, not a copular predicate. A clause Jest obiecany is unprinted. It reuses the participle and the copula. It is constructed. przyrzeczoną darowiznę is attributive, and the phraseology is umowa przyrzeczona. A clause Jest przyrzeczony is unprinted. The person collocations are mężowi, żonie, Bogu. przed ołtarzem, przed Bogiem, and przed Sejmem are place. They are not the Promisee. ślubowali miłość mężowi czy żonie is accusative plus dative. burmistrz ślubował rzetelne wykonywanie swoich obowiązków is an accusative nominalization. matka ślubowała Bogu, że… and Ślubuję uroczyście, że będę wytrwale dążyć are że. daję słowo and słowo daję, as WSJP files them, are not a three-place pledge. daję słowo is używane w sytuacji, gdy mówiący chce podkreślić swoje przekonanie o prawdziwości tego, o czym mówi, syntax (że ZDANIE). słowo daję is a parenthetical truth marker. Słowo daję, że pozamykam wszystkie książki is still that marker. Dałabym słowo, że mała wszystko rozumie is the same że. No KOMU is in those syntax tables. A filled dać słowo komuś is not in the WSJP entries opened. The Russian page records a Small Academic Dictionary formula дать слово {кому}. These Polish entries do not match that formula.
The public Walenty entry for obiecać (lemma 631) stores one schema, :_::imperf:subj{np(str)}+obj{np(str)}+{np(dat)}+{prepnp(do,gen)}, with no examples. That required do+genitive is not in the WSJP syntax of obiecać. This page does not adopt that schema. Polish puts the person in a bare dative, with no preposition, and leaves the pledge infinitive bare. Russian also uses a bare dative, and Ushakov’s frame word there is кому-чему. WSJP’s KOMU collocations are people. The printed genitive under nie is wyników, on the inanimate sense. zobowiązać się takes się, wobec+genitive for the person, and do+genitive for the nominal act, and it also prints a bare infinitive. It is a separate frame.
