Where the French frame diverges from English pay (a bill/someone). The English page keeps one accusative, the document, and brings the sum back as with or in. A person beside a sum is the sister page payGIVE. French payer prints the bill, the goods, the sum, and the person paid as fillings of one direct object. The same articles print à beside that object (ses impôts au percepteur, 125 Fr. au fisc). The clitic splits the two person-markings. Alone, the person is accusative le (Il le payait). Beside a thing, the person is dative lui, me, te, or vous. English pay someone does not make that split. English pay for the goods uses for. French prints those goods as the direct object (une marchandise, votre appartement). pour is a separate phrase, and the articles do not give it one gloss.

à is not German an + accusative. On the German page, the person paid is an accusative of bezahlen (den Maler), a dative beside the thing (mir die Übernachtung), or an + accusative (an wen, an ihn, labeled seltener on bezahlen). French has the first two and not the third. The direct-object person matches den Maler bezahlen. à plus the dative clitic matches the German dative. Nothing in the French articles is a prepositional accusative of the payee beside that dative. lui is the clitic of à, not a second government.

régler takes the person begleichen does not print. Duden’s object of begleichen is eine Rechnung or die Schuld. Larousse, Le Robert, and the Académie print une facture and also le plombier, le boucher, un fournisseur. acquitter une facture stays on the bill. s’acquitter marks that debt with de. German tilgen and abbezahlen keep the debt accusative.

Places · who wears which marking

The subject is the person who settles the bill, when the clause has that subject. The direct object is the bill, the goods, the sum, or, on payer and on régler, the person paid. à beside that object is the recipient, and the clitic is dative. pour is not that à. de on payer de sa poche is the money’s source. de on s’acquitter is the debt. en and par are the means: TLFi en espèces, par chèques · Académie Régler en espèces, par virement bancaire.

Examples

Argument difference. English pay (a bill/someone) uses one object for the bill and does not split the person. French payer quelqu’un makes that person the direct object, clitic le (Il le payait). payer quelque chose à quelqu’un puts the same person in à, clitic lui (me … les cinq termes, Larousse le lui). German has a third marking, an + accusative, and French does not. régler takes une facture or le plombier. s’acquitter takes de plus the debt.

  • The direct object of payer has four printed fillings. Due: une amende, ses dettes, une facture. Goods: une marchandise, sa place, votre appartement. Sum: 125 Fr., 3 euros. Person: un commerçant, le. They are separate examples.
  • The person is le or lui, not both, and not an + accusative. Accusative: Il le payait, la caissière, le plombier. Dative, beside a thing: au percepteur, me … les cinq termes, Je lui ai payé un diamant, Larousse le lui. A lui beside une facture in one clause is the constructed line. German an wen is unprinted.
  • The offer reading of payer qqch à qqn is labeled. Larousse’s difficultés note calls it familier and paraphrases it le lui offrir. Le Robert labels Je te paie un verre familier and glosses it offrir. Payer ses impôts au percepteur is Larousse sense 1 and is not under that label.
  • Goods plus a sum, and the triple. Printed pairs: amount + à (125 Fr. au fisc), goods + amount (six sous, 15 Fr., combien […] appartement), thing + à (impôts au percepteur). One clause with goods, a sum, and à is unprinted. 50 euros is not a printed sum.
  • pour does not have one gloss. Le Robert lists Payer pour qqn and Payer pour qqch under Verser de l’argent, with no direct object and no further gloss. Larousse’s invite definition says en payant pour lui. TLFi glosses Payer pour qqn as expiation and prints Bernanos. pour + infinitive beside a person-object is Je vous paie pour vous occuper. The page leaves the lines side by side.
  • Two de phrases, and a third on another verb. payer de sa poche and de ses deniers are “pay with one’s own money.” payer de sa personne is the figurative locution, not a bill. TLFi II payer de + an attitude noun is labeled vieilli. s’acquitter de is the debt.
  • acquitter une facture is two employments in the articles. Larousse sense 1 and the Académie gloss it as paying what one owes. Le Robert and TLFi’s Usuel block gloss the signature pour acquit. TLFi calls the sum-paying employment partiellement vieilli, still usual in administrative language for official taxes. acquitter qqn is the court sense. A person as the object of the payment sense is unprinted.
  • régler prints the person. le plombier, le boucher, un fournisseur. à beside régler une facture is unprinted. virer and transférer are named in Index 2 and are not given a frame on this page.
