Buyer, Goods, Seller, Beneficiary, Price, shop · French cloth · working claim, revisable

Voice[Buyer] + complement of the root (Goods, direct object) + à+NP, Seller or Beneficiary + pour+NP Beneficiary + Price, where a line prints one (pour + a sum, or à + a rate) + chez+NP for the shop

A purchase, on this reading, has a Buyer, the Goods, a Seller when a line fills one, a Beneficiary when a line fills one, a Price when a line fills one, and a shop when a line fills one. They are not six equal sisters of acheter. Voice adds the Buyer. The root’s complement is the Goods, a direct object. French nouns have no case ending, so that subject is not a morphological nominative. à adds a person. Larousse prints that person as ambiguous between the Seller and the Beneficiary. pour adds a Beneficiary in the line Larousse recommends, and adds a sum in the lines that print a sum. chez adds the shop. The drawing is working and revisable. It is not a settled analysis, and it is not a claim about telicity.

What is different from the English gloss. Cambridge prints buy with [+ two objects] in He bought his mother some flowers, and the same line offers He bought some flowers for his mother. The seller in the articles opened is from: I bought my camera from a friend of mine. French prints one à for both of those persons. Larousse’s difficulty note is j'ai acheté un livre à Pierre, glossed as Pierre sold it, or as the book was bought to be given to Pierre, and the recommendation is acheter pour. Le Robert prints the frame Acheter qqch. à qqn and does not gloss the à. On German kaufen the bare dative is the beneficiary, and on abkaufen that dative is the seller. French does not split the lemma. The pour of a person matches English for of a person. A pour of a sum is also printed. A numeral for is unprinted in the Cambridge lines opened here.

Places · who wears which marking

No line opened here stacks a Seller in à, a Beneficiary in pour, the goods, and a sum in one clause. The pieces are printed apart. Wiktionary’s Pour une trentaine de sous, on achetait un lapin aux éclusiers puts the sum and a Seller in one clause. Larousse’s J'ai acheté un livre pour Pierre is the Beneficiary, with no sum and no Seller in that sentence. TLFi’s chez le marchand is the shop, with the goods son pain and no person in à.

Examples

Argument difference. English can package the beneficiary and the goods as two bare objects, He bought his mother some flowers, or put that person in for, and it puts the seller in from. French prints one direct object, the goods. The person in à is not fixed: Larousse glosses one sentence both ways, and the eighth edition defines acheter une chose à quelqu'un both as l'acheter de lui and as acheter pour quelqu'un. pour+NP is the beneficiary Larousse prints in order to choose. pour of a sum is the price, in a different line. chez is the shop. On kaufen the dative is the beneficiary, and on abkaufen the dative is the seller. The converse vendre puts the seller in the subject and the buyer in à or lui. That buyer is not the beneficiary of acheter.

What the passive and the reflexive show

The passive and the reflexive are operations on the same places. They do not add a participant. The stem vowel is the conjugation the entries print. It is not given a telicity reading.

Passive of the goods. The ninth edition prints Nos meubles ont été achetés à tempérament, à crédit. The furniture is the subject. No beneficiary and no seller are in that line. Le Robert prints Cela s'achète dans une crémerie and labels the pronominal passive. Larousse prints où est-ce que ça s'achète. TLFi separates that passive from the reflexive and prints Ce droit-là s'achète très cher. A passive that keeps a beneficiary or a seller and leaves the goods as object is unprinted. Nothing further is constructed.

Reflexive s'acheter. TLFi defines S'acheter qqc. as Acheter pour soi and points at the beneficiary à. The ninth edition prints Elle s'est acheté une voiture. Larousse prints S'acheter une voiture neuve. The buyer and the beneficiary are the same person. The goods stay the direct object. The auxiliary of that printed compound is est. The transitive compounds in the same articles are J'ai acheté and a acheté.

The other senses stay off the purchase frame. Larousse’s Acheter un témoin puts the person in the direct object. The ninth edition’s Acheter le silence de quelqu'un is the same bribe sense. French Wiktionary’s Québec line n'achetait pas cette version is the believe sense. Cambridge’s She'll never buy that story is the English believe sense. Those lines stop at the citation.

Cambridge’s from is the seller. French spells that person as à, as lui in the eighth edition’s seller line, or as de where that line is printed. Cambridge’s for of a person, and the first object of [+ two objects], are the beneficiary. French spells that person as à as well, or as pour. German kaufen spells the beneficiary as a bare dative and does not print a für of a person. German abkaufen spells the seller as a bare dative. French keeps both readings on acheter.

On vendre the subject is the seller, the buyer is à or lui, and pour is the price. On acheter the subject is that buyer, à is the seller or the beneficiary, and pour is the beneficiary or the price according to the line. The analogy is the added person-phrase and the one pour that the complement type distinguishes. It is not a claim that a beneficiary and a seller are one role.

Buying in French is not one à. Buyer (Voice, subject), Goods (complement of the root, direct object), Seller or Beneficiary in à+NP, Beneficiary also in pour+NP, Price in pour + a sum or in à + a rate where a line prints it, and the shop in chez+NP. English buy X from Y is from. English buy something for someone is for. A numeral English for is unprinted in the lines opened. German kaufen puts the beneficiary in a bare dative. German abkaufen puts the seller in a bare dative.

FR micro-entry live Beyond Index 2 à seller versus à beneficiary DE kaufen live

Sense × language: buy · French (acheter). The purchase sense is the page. The bribe sense and the Québec believe line stay off the frame. No English buy hub. Geometry neighbor: sell · vendre, the converse, and buy · kaufen, the other language of this lemma. Index 2 French Transfer cites échanger, donner — not this verb.

Working paper. French micro-entry, the second language of buy. Dictionary frames were read on Le Robert (acheter), on the TLFi at CNRTL, on the Académie française (ninth and eighth editions) at the same portal, on Larousse, including the difficulty note, and on French Wiktionary, with Cambridge and English Wiktionary for English buy.
Constructed examples. Dictionary lines are marked as printed. Every other full clause is marked constructed. The bare double object is starred because the filled person-marking beside the goods is à, pour, de, or lui. A bare measure and the wording pour 10 euros are unprinted and are not constructed.
Arity: several places, not one flat verb. Index 2 does not list acheter. Surface count can name a buyer, the goods, a seller, a beneficiary, a price, and a shop. The lexicon does not list those as co-arguments of one flat V. Voice adds the Buyer. The root takes the Goods. à adds a person, Seller or Beneficiary. pour adds a Beneficiary or a sum, according to the line. chez adds the shop. de adds a Seller where a line prints it. No telicity claim is made from the stem vowel or from the passive.
What this page does not do. It does not open an English page of buy. It does not edit kaufen beyond the language list, and it does not edit vendre. The bribe sense and the believe line stop at the citation.

Hierarchy

Not a flat grid of six sisters, and not one preposition copied from the English gloss. Voice adds the Buyer. The root takes the Goods. à adds a person whose role is read off the line: Seller or Beneficiary. pour adds a Beneficiary when the complement is a person, and a Price when the complement is a sum. à of a rate, or cher, adds a Price of another shape. chez adds the shop. de adds a Seller in the lines that print it. The drawing is working and revisable.

What French changes, against English buy it from him and buy it for him, is that one à covers both persons. What French changes, against German kaufen and abkaufen, is that the two dative roles stay on one lemma. What French shares with English is pour of a person, matching for of a person. The printed French pour of a sum has no numeral twin in the Cambridge lines opened here.

  • kaufen. The other language of buy. Accusative goods. Bare dative beneficiary. Price für + a sum. A für of a person is unprinted. On abkaufen the bare dative is the seller. That split is a split of lemmas. French à is not that split.
  • vendre. The converse. The seller is the subject. The buyer is à or lui. The goods are the direct object. pour is the price. That buyer is not the beneficiary of acheter, and it is not the seller of acheter.
