An exchange, on this reading, has someone who gives a thing and receives another. The one who exchanges is the subject, when a clause names one. The thing given is the direct object: the drawing, the pen, the place, the stamps. The thing received is contre plus a DP. Larousse prints Échanger un dessin contre un livre and, under constructions, il a échangé son petit appartement en ville contre un grand pavillon en banlieue. Le Robert’s frame is Échanger qqch. contre qqch. The TLFi’s contre line is Staël, échanger les quatre commissaires contre les prisonniers du temple. Littré’s heading of the same place is Échanger une chose pour une autre, and Pascal, as Littré prints it, is Ils échangent le sacrifice pour de l'argent. Larousse’s French–English entry prints both prepositions in one line, échanger un stylo contre ou pour un briquet, glossed to exchange or to swap a pen for a lighter.
The other person is avec plus a DP. Those à phrases sit inside livrer and laisser. Neither article’s construction list is échanger quelque chose à quelqu'un.
Where this frame diverges from the English gloss exchange X for Y with Z and from German tauschen. Cambridge’s learner entry prints exchange something for something as its own pattern: I exchanged those trousers for a larger size. The business entry prints exchange sth for sth, and a separate pattern exchange sth with sb. No Cambridge line opened on the German page stacks with and for in one clause. French prints the received thing in contre, and, where Littré and the bilingual Larousse line print it, in pour. The bilingual gloss of contre ou pour is English for. The partner is avec plus a DP. German tauschen marks that partner with mit plus dative, and the received thing with gegen plus accusative. für plus accusative is unprinted on tauschen. A French clause that names the direct object, avec, and contre together is unprinted. The TLFi lists avec and contre as two ways of introducing the second complement.
Places · who wears which marking
The goods lines do not stack every marking in one clause. The direct object is the thing given. contre plus a DP is the thing received, and pour plus a DP is that same place where a source prints pour. avec plus a DP is the other person in Larousse and in the TLFi, and the other thing in Littré’s Guiraud line. troquer is another head. Its prepositions are not copied back onto every line of échanger.

Marking map. On échanger, read the direct object as the thing given, contre as the thing received, and avec plus a person as the partner. Read pour as that received thing where Littré, the bilingual Larousse line, or troquer prints it. Read Littré’s avec un diadème as avec of a thing beside the object. Read se with a direct object as the reciprocal, and se with the goods as subject as the passive Littré prints. Do not read à in the definition as a partner construction.
- Direct object of the Theme. A line can name only that object. Larousse’s Échanger des prisonniers has no partner and no contre.
- contre plus a DP, the counter-Theme. German gegen plus accusative is the counter-Theme of tauschen. English for is the Cambridge pattern, and it is the gloss of Larousse’s contre ou pour.
- pour plus a DP. Littré’s heading is pour une autre, and Pascal fills pour de l'argent. Larousse bilingual prints contre ou pour and glosses the line as for. The monolingual CONSTRUCTION list names avec and contre and does not name pour. Le Robert’s modern frame is contre. The seventeenth-century definition on that page, Donner une chose pour une autre, is followed by Il a eschangé sa terre contre des rentes. pour in that old gloss is not a second example. On troquer, Larousse sense 2 is pour (contre) and the example is pour la sienne. The TLFi proverb prints contre un aveugle and pour un borgne. German für plus accusative on tauschen is unprinted. Usito’s pour échanger un chandail trop grand is a purpose infinitive of returning to the shop. It is not échanger pour plus the received thing. Those clauses are changer.
- avec plus a DP of the partner. Larousse avec mon voisin beside ma place. TLFi avec Amédée beside quelques pierres. Larousse avec lui beside the ideas. A partner in à plus a DP is unprinted as a construction. The definition’s à quelqu'un and à qqn paraphrase livrer and laisser. German’s partner is mit plus dative. French avec does not spell a dative.
- avec of the thing. Littré’s Guiraud line puts the diadem under avec and keeps la tiare as the direct object. Larousse’s heading of avec is a person. German mit der Wohnung and [mit den Plätzen] are the lines with no accusative. English with on the Cambridge exchange lines opened on the German page is a person. The French avec-phrase is not uniquely the partner.
- Reciprocal se, and the line with no se. Larousse bilingual prints s'échanger des disques under emploi réciproque. The subject of those lines is plural, and the stamps and the records are the direct object. Le Robert prints Ils échangent des timbres with the label sujet au pluriel and no se. German die Plätze, die Partner tauschen is a plural object and has no sich. English exchange greetings is that plural object. Usito’s conjugation table separates pronominal occasionnellement, auxiliary avoir, from pronominal essentiellement, auxiliary être. The table is a paradigm. The lexical reciprocal with a direct object is the timbres line.
- Passive se. Littré sense 5 is Être donné par échange, and the example is Ces marchandises s'échangent facilement. The goods are the subject. Les ratifications s'échangèrent bientôt is the same section. The looks line adds entre eux. The TLFi’s remark calls a pronominal of passive sense possible and prints Durkheim en s'échangeant. Larousse bilingual lists emploi passif apart from emploi réciproque and glosses the passive as to be swapped. That passive is not the collectors’ s'échangent des timbres.
- troquer. The TLFi schema is Troquer qqc. (contre qqc.). The proverb prints contre and pour. Martin du Gard, as the entry prints it, is troqué sa tunique contre la veste. Littré’s synonym note distinguishes the two verbs: an échange covers goods of every kind, and a troc is narrower, hand to hand. The note is about the nouns’ range. It does not assign contre to one verb and pour to the other.
- Greetings, looks, and letters. The TLFi prints Échanger des lettres and échangèrent un flamboyant regard (Zola, as the entry prints it). Those lines name one object, or an object and avec. They do not add contre.
