Who exchanges, Theme, Partner, counter-Theme · German cloth · working claim, revisable

tauschen · subject (who exchanges) + ThemeACC + Partner (mit+dative) · the same mit can hold the thing when the clause has no accusative

counter-Theme on tauschen: gegen+accusative · für+accusative unprinted on this verb

eintauschen · ThemeACC + gegen+accusative, and Duden’s rarer für+accusative · DWDS also names in

umtauschen · return at a shop, and currency · ThemeACC + in+accusative or gegen+accusative · a bare dative, where printed, is the customer when the shop is the subject

An exchange, on this reading, has someone who gives a thing and receives another. The one who exchanges is the subject, when a clause names one. The thing given is accusative: the stamps, the room, the place, the radio. The other person is mit plus dative. Duden prints sie hat das Zimmer mit ihm getauscht. PONS prints [etw] mit jdm tauschen and den Platz mit mir tauschen. Langenscheidt prints den Arbeitsplatz mit jemandem tauschen. The thing received is gegen plus accusative. Duden prints etwas gegen etwas tauschen. DWDS prints seine Wohnung gegen eine kleinere tauschen. PONS prints etw [gegen etw acc] tauschen and glosses that bracket as English for. Langenscheidt’s commercial line is tausche Radio gegen Fernsehapparat, glossed exchange radio for television set, and the entry writes gegen as for.

No article opened here prints für plus accusative on the verb tauschen. PONS prints für on the noun: im Tausch gegen [o. für] [etw], glossed in exchange for. That oder is the noun. It is not a second preposition of the verb. Duden’s definition of tauschen writes jemandem eine Sache … überlassen. DWDS writes jmdm. etw. geben. Those datives sit inside the paraphrase of überlassen and of geben. Neither entry prints a frame line jemandem etwas tauschen.

What is different from the English gloss exchange X with Y for Z. Cambridge’s learner entry prints exchange something for something as its own pattern: I exchanged those trousers for a larger size. The business entry prints exchange sth for sth, and a separate pattern exchange sth with sb. Currency is a third pattern, exchange sth into sth: Larger hotels will exchange dollars into local currency. No Cambridge line opened here stacks with and for in one clause. German tauschen prints the partner in mit plus dative and the received thing in gegen plus accusative, and the bilingual gloss of that gegen is English for. The articles print those two phrases on separate lines. A clause that names the accusative, the partner, and gegen together is unprinted.

Places · who wears which marking

The goods lines do not stack every marking in one clause. The accusative is the thing given. mit plus dative is the other person, or, when the clause has no accusative, the thing. gegen plus accusative is the thing received. eintauschen and umtauschen are other heads, and their prepositions are not copied back onto tauschen.

Argument difference. English exchange X for Z marks the received thing with for. English exchange X with Y marks the other person with with. English exchange X into Z marks currency with into. The partner is mit plus dative. für plus accusative is unprinted on tauschen. It is printed on eintauschen, and Duden marks it seltener beside gegen. umtauschen marks the received thing with in plus accusative or with gegen. On Duden’s shop line of umtauschen the subject is das Geschäft, and [mir] is the customer. The prefixes aus-, ein-, and um- separate. • für on tauschen. Unprinted. The constructed für Münzen is not a grammatical claim. PONS prints für on the noun im Tausch gegen [o. für]. Duden prints für on eintauschen and marks it seltener. Langenscheidt lists für first on eintauschen only.
  • A bare dative partner on tauschen. Unprinted. Duden’s jemandem and DWDS’s jmdm. are inside the paraphrase of überlassen and of geben. The printed partner is mit plus dative. The constructed Pat tauscht Chris die Briefmarken is not a grammatical claim.

  • gegen, für, and in on eintauschen. Duden ranks für as seltener beside gegen and does not print in in the example. DWDS’s schema names all three and does not rank them. PONS prints gegen and für and glosses both as for. Langenscheidt’s editorial line is für (oder gegen). No entry opened here makes one of them the only frame.
  • in against gegen on umtauschen. Duden prints both in one line, etwas in, gegen etwas, and fills currency with in. DWDS fills goods with gegen and currency with in. PONS glosses the goods in [o. gegen] as for and the currency in as into. The two prepositions are not given one English preposition.
  • The bare dative on umtauschen and on austauschen. Duden’s [mir] has the shop, or the clerk in the question, as subject. PONS glosses jdm etw umtauschen as for sb, and [jdm] on austauschen as for sb beside replace … with. That dative is the customer, or the person for whom a part is replaced. It is not mit ihm.
  • sich and the places. The printed places lines have a plural object and no sich. A full Wir tauschen die Plätze is constructed on those lines. Wir tauschen uns die Plätze is unprinted. sich is sich mit jemandem [über …] austauschen. Goods of austauschen print miteinander and gegeneinander.
  • Unopened books. Barron’s 501 German Verbs was not opened as a labelled tauschen article. Nothing is quoted from it. Langenscheidt’s external example sentences are marked on that site as not checked by the editors. Nothing from those sentences is filed as a frame.
