A deduction, on this reading, takes an amount off a source or a whole. The agent is the subject, when a clause names one. The amount is the direct object. Portuguese nouns have no case ending, so that object is not a morphological accusative. The source of a salary, a payment, a rent, or a sum is de. Infopédia also prints the whole with a, in descontar isso ao valor da venda. ao is a fused with the masculine article. That a is the whole, not a person. deduzir’s subtract lines print de and do not print that a. No dictionary opened here prints an affected person as a + NP or as lhe on a salary or tax line, and none prints por or para as a reason beside the amount and the source. The drawing leaves those two places empty. It is revisable.

What is different from English deduct X from Y. Cambridge’s verb sense is to take away an amount or part from a total. The printed lines use one from: points deducted from his score, Money is deducted from your account, Employers deduct the tax from employee salaries, and the business frame deduct sth from sth in The company deducts $31.93 each week from my salary for health insurance. English does not spell that whole as to. Portuguese descontar does, once, in the Infopédia usage block: the amount isso is the direct object, and the whole is ao valor da venda. The same block’s passive keeps de, descontado do meu ordenado. deduzir’s printed subtract lines use only de. Cambridge’s for health insurance is a reason beside from. A por or para of that kind is unprinted on the Portuguese subtract clauses opened here. A dative person is not English from, and it is unprinted on those clauses.

a of the whole, on descontar. Infopédia’s first sense is subtrair a uma quantidade ou a um todo; deduzir, and the usage line is Vou descontar isso ao valor da venda. The preposition in the definition and the preposition in the clause are the same a. It is the sale price, not a person. Aulete and Michaelis, on the salary lines, print de and do not print this a. deduzir’s subtract examples print de only. The two prepositions are both printed for descontar. No entry ranks them. This page does not turn the silence on deduzir into a ban.
em is not the source of a deduction from a salary. Infopédia Descontam em dinheiro as faltas ao trabalho names the form of the deduction. Aulete’s label tdr. + em is sense 4, Descontava nos amigos o insucesso amoroso, to take it out on someone. English Wiktionary prints the same reading: descontou tudo na cachaça. Those em-phrases are not do salário.
The person. Unprinted as a + NP and as lhe on the subtract lines. The one lhe on Aulete’s older block is the figurative sense Não levar ou não meter em conta: se não se lhe descontar o influxo das imperiosas convenções da Renascença (Mendes Leal, in Castilho, Médico à força, p. 221, 1869). It is not a salary. In the Azevedo line, o que me deve aquele sujeito, me is the object of dever. lhes is unprinted. A clause that doubles a clitic with a of a person is unprinted. Portuguese cobrar does print a and de of a person. That person is a payer. It is not a license for a person of descontar.
por and para. Unprinted as a reason of the subtract frame. Michaelis por mês measures the rate of the fixed sum. Aulete mas isso é para descontar o que me deve aquele sujeito puts para on é. Infopédia sense 3, contribuir com parte do salário para fins tributários, has the purpose in the definition and no clause. Aulete deduzir sense 1, the inference, prints Pelo horário, deduzi que não viriam mais. Pelo is por + o, and it is the ground of the conclusion, not a reason for taking a sum off a salary. The same sense prints da conversa in Você deduziu o mesmo que eu da conversa? That de is what the conclusion is drawn from. No source stacks a person, an amount, and por or para in one subtract clause.

descontar and deduzir share the subtract reading, and each has readings the other does not print as a clause. Priberam glosses each with the other for that reading and prints no clause. Infopédia’s third sense of deduzir is subtrair; descontar; abater. Aulete’s first sense of descontar names DEDUzir. The salary lines and the tax lines are both de plus a direct object. The Infopédia a of the whole is printed on descontar only. Cambridge’s translation list names Portuguese deduzir. That name is not a frame.

Discounting a cheque, and the bank’s discount window, stay on descontar and off the salary frame. Priberam sense 2 is Trocar com desconto, with no clause. Aulete sense 2 is exchanging a cheque, a note, or a voucher for money: Já não descontarei o cheque (João Cabral). Michaelis lists the expression Descontar um cheque. The intransitive bank reading is Aulete As agências bancárias não descontarão esta semana and Michaelis Os bancos não estão descontando este mês. There is no amount beside a de-phrase. The noun desconto is not a page.

Not counting something, and taking it out on someone, are other senses of descontar. Priberam sense 3 is Não meter em conta; prescindir. Infopédia senses 4 and 5 are não levar em conta and prescindir de, the second with de in the definition and no clause. Aulete sense 3 prints Vamos descontar (…) a Natureza (Carpeaux). Michaelis prints É preciso descontar suas pequenas imperfeições. The object is the thing left out of account. The older lhe belongs here, not on the wage. Sense 4, with em, is the retaliate reading already separated above.

deduzir also means to infer, to enumerate, and to bring a legal claim. The inference is a different frame. Aulete prints a que-clause, Pelo horário, deduzi que não viriam mais, and de of what the conclusion comes from, da conversa. Priberam sense 2 is Inferir, with no clause. Michaelis sense 1 is Tirar conclusão por meio de raciocínio, labelled transitive direct and indirect, with no clause.
