A teaching, on uczyć and nauczyć, has a Teacher, a Learner, and a Content. They are not three equal sisters of one flat verb. Voice adds the Teacher. Low Appl introduces the Learner. The root’s complement is the Content: a genitive noun phrase, or, where an entry prints one, a bare infinitive. Wielki słownik języka polskiego PAN (WSJP), sense mówić, writes the government as KOGO/CO + CZEGO and KOGO/CO + BEZOKOLICZNIK. The same two schemas are on nauczyć. KOGO/CO is the accusative of the person. CZEGO is the genitive of the skill or the subject. The two articles also print KOGO/CO + że ZDANIE or an indirect question, and KOGO + o CZYM.
What is different from the English gloss. English teach someone something is two bare objects. uczyć is not that double object. The person who is taught is accusative, and the skill or subject is genitive. Polish Wiktionary prints both in one clause: Uczę mojego kolegę nowych przepisów ruchu drogowego. kolegę is accusative (kolegi would be genitive). przepisów is genitive. WSJP’s person collocations include młodzież on uczyć and córkę on nauczyć, accusative forms, and the skill collocations include matematyki and dobrych manier, genitive forms. Solarzowa, as WSJP prints it, is jak uczono nas dobrych manier: dobrych manier is genitive. nas is the person, and that pronoun does not show accusative apart from genitive.
The infinitive. The infinitive is bare, and it sits in the slot of the genitive. WSJP’s schema is KOGO/CO + BEZOKOLICZNIK. Potaczała, as that article prints it: wadera (samica) uczyła polować urodzone w zeszłym roku młode. Bielas, on nauczyć: iluzjonista nauczył go żonglować siedmioma piłeczkami. The collocation lists fill the same slot: uczyć chodzić, czytać, mówić, pisać, śpiewać, tańczyć, and nauczyć chodzić, czytać, rysować, śpiewać, walczyć. pływać is not in those two lists. It is printed on uczyć się. Polish Wiktionary’s sense header is ona uczy (1.1) dzieci liczyć. dzieci does not show the case. liczyć is the infinitive. Italian insegnare, Spanish enseñar, and French enseigner mark the infinitive with a or à. The Polish infinitive has no preposition.
The clause, and o. The genitive and the infinitive are not the only printed complements. Cosmopolitan, in WSJP: Od dzieciństwa uczono nas, że zazdrość jest czymś złym. Ziomecki: Glisner nauczył mnie, że…. Gałczyńska: Elżbieta nauczyła mnie, jak je przyrządzać. Surdykowski fills o with the person still in the clause: niewiele nauczy nas o zjawisku. Żukrowski fills o and no person: o Annie Achmatowej uczą w szkołach. That o plus locative is a printed complement. It is not the genitive of matematyki.
uczyć się. The Learner is the nominative subject. WSJP’s article is its own entry, glossed poznawać coś…, with Zob. uczyć under origin, and the aspect partner named there is nauczyć się. The Content is genitive, or a bare infinitive. English Wiktionary: Uczę się języka polskiego. języka is genitive. Czubaj: uczy się pływać pod wodą. The person one learns from is in one schema cell, u KOGO | od KOGO, and the genitive Content is optional on that line. Dehnel fills od and the genitive together: Uczył się od niej angielskiego. Grynberg fills u: których uczyła się u najlepszego poznańskiego profesora, and których resumes kroków baletowych. PWN’s corpus line is Ucz się od innych, with no Content noun. Both prepositions are printed. This page does not split them into two meanings. The place phrases w gimnazjum, w liceum and the goal do matury are other complements. They are not the teacher.
nauczać. WSJP’s school sense, headword gloss matematyki, defines the verb as passing on, in school, the knowledge of some subject. The government is (KOGO) + CZEGO: an optional accusative Learner, and a genitive Content. The collocations fill only the genitive: francuskiego, języków obcych, katechizmu, matematyki, przedmiotów humanistycznych, religii. Tęcza: Nauczała przedmiotów matematyczno-przyrodniczych i języków obcych. A second citation on that page: uczelni, które nauczają języka polskiego. No accusative Learner is filled in those lines. PWN’s corpus has ze studentami, których naucza. których is masculine personal, and that form does not separate accusative from genitive. Bańko (PWN Poradnia, 25.01.2012) says the neutral line is nauczyciel uczy matematyki, biologii, and that saying naucza of a teacher elevates the work, because priests, missionaries, apostles, and philosophers nauczają. He also says the noun nauczanie is often used of school. WSJP files the school sense with no register label. The two notes are both printed. This page does not rank them.
wykładać. PWN sense 5, under the pair wyłożyć — wykładać, is wykładać «nauczać na wyższej uczelni». The corpus line is W Sztokholmie wykłada matematykę. matematykę is accusative. matematyki would be the genitive that uczyć and nauczać print. The same Tęcza sentence that has genitive przedmiotów after nauczała continues po francusku wykładała historię sztuki i literatury. historię is accusative. sztuki and literatury are genitives inside that noun phrase. They are not a second object. Polish Wiktionary sense 1.4 glosses uczyć czegoś, prowadzić wykłady and gives the English word lecture. The example is Ten doktor wykłada na Wydziale Psychiatrii, a place, and no content noun. The gloss word czegoś is not a filled frame. The WSJP sense opened here is the explain reading, not that lecture line: przedstawiać lub wyjaśniać komuś jakąś sprawę, government (KOMU) + CO, collocations plan, problem, sprawę, and Tomaszewska wykładał wspólnikom swój … plan. wspólnikom is dative. plan is accusative. The aspect partner named on that page is wyłożyć. Other WSJP senses of wykładać were not opened.
Against the other languages. German beibringen, Spanish enseñar, French enseigner, Italian insegnare, Russian преподавать, Hungarian tanít frame (b), and Japanese 教える with に and を put the Content in the direct object and the Learner in an oblique phrase. uczyć reverses that assignment: the Learner is the accusative, and the Content is not a direct object. Russian учить shares the accusative Learner and puts the Content in the dative. German lehren shares the accusative Learner and puts the Content in a second accusative. Hungarian frame (a) shares the accusative Learner and puts the Content in the sublative. The Polish Content of this pair is genitive. wykładać in the PWN lecture line is the accusative Content those other lemmas print, and it is the case uczyć does not print for matematyki.
