Seller, goods, buyer, price · Greek marking · working claim, revisable
The seller is the nominative subject. Λεξικό της Κοινής Νεοελληνικής prints Ο Ησαύ πούλησε τα πρωτοτόκιά του για ένα πιάτο φακή. Ησαύ wears no case suffix. Πούλησα το αυτοκίνητο and Πούλησαν τα δικαιώματα spell no seller noun. πούλησα is first person singular. πούλησαν is third person plural. The passive line makes the goods that subject: Η δημόσια επιχείρηση πουλήθηκε σε ιδιώτες. These subjects take no case ending. There is no ergative on these clauses.
πουλάω / πουλώ. The Triantafyllides headword is πουλάω [puláo] & -ώ, -ιέμαι, class Ρ10.1. Sense 1: παραχωρώ, μεταβιβάζω την κυριότητα ενός οικονομικού αγαθού (εμπορεύματος, δικαιώματος κτλ.) σε κπ. άλλο έναντι καταβολής ενός αντιτίμου. The antonym label is αγοράζω. English Wiktionary: IPA /puˈla.o/, hyphenation που‑λά‑ω, “to sell.” It lists πουλώ as a less frequent, more formal variant, and πωλώ as the learned form. Greek Wiktionary gives the same present pair, πουλάω/πουλώ, aorist πούλησα, passive πουλιέμαι. The definition’s other person is σε κπ. άλλο. κπ. is the dictionary’s someone, and after σε that someone is accusative. The definition’s return is έναντι καταβολής ενός αντιτίμου. αντιτίμου is genitive, inside καταβολής. It is not a finite price phrase, and it is not a second object.
The goods are the accusative. Πούλησα το αυτοκίνητο / το σπίτι / το χωράφι / τις μετοχές μου. Πούλησαν τα δικαιώματα / τα ποσοστά τους. τα κοσμήματά της. ένα ελαττωματικό ρολόι. ένα οικόπεδο. λαχεία. ρούχα. κρατικά μυστικά. τα πρωτοτόκιά του. Holton, Mackridge, and Philippaki-Warburton, Greek: A Comprehensive Grammar of the Modern Language (Routledge, 1997), §1.1.1.2: the direct object of a monotransitive is accusative. Their example is Πρέπει να καλέσουμε το Γιάννη. The verb is καλέσουμε, not πουλάω. §1.1.1.3: a bitransitive combines an accusative direct object with an indirect object in the genitive or in a prepositional phrase. The sale lines print one accusative, the goods. They do not print a second accusative for the buyer. The verbs that grammar gives two accusatives are διδάσκω and κερνώ: Φέτος θα διδάξουν τους πρωτοετείς γραμματική, Κεράσανε τους φίλους τους παγωτό. πουλάω is not in that list.
The buyer, when the line uses a clitic, is genitive. Μου πούλησαν ένα ελαττωματικό ρολόι. μου is the genitive clitic. The watch is accusative. The sellers are the third person plural, with no spelled noun. Holton §1.1.1.6: an indirect-object clitic is genitive, and it precedes an accusative clitic. The example is Του το είπα. The verb is είπα. A double clitic on πουλάω, μου το, is unprinted. The printed shape is the genitive clitic and a full accusative noun. §1.1.1.4 prints a full noun in the genitive as the indirect object, on δίνω: Ο Γιάννης έδωσε ένα ωραίο βραχιόλι της Μαίρης, and έδωσε της Μαίρης ένα ωραίο βραχιόλι. The same section says that full-noun genitive is not common, because the genitive is also the possessive: το ωραίο βραχιόλι της Μαίρης is Mary’s bracelet or the bracelet given to Mary. No πουλάω line prints a full noun in the genitive as the buyer.
A full noun as the buyer is σε plus accusative. Η δημόσια επιχείρηση πουλήθηκε σε ιδιώτες. The enterprise is the subject. σε ιδιώτες is the buyers, accusative, with no article. Πούλησε σε αντίπαλη χώρα κρατικά μυστικά. σε αντίπαλη χώρα is accusative. The secrets are the goods. The game line fuses the article: πούλησαν το παιχνίδι (στην αντίπαλη ομάδα). στην is σε plus την. Holton §1.1.1.5 prints that recipient preposition on δίνω: Έδωσε το βραχιόλι στην Μαίρη. The verb is έδωσε. A bare buyer beside the goods is unprinted.
σε plus accusative is not always the buyer. Πουλάει λαχεία στους δρόμους. λαχεία is the accusative, the tickets. στους δρόμους is σε plus τους, the streets. Sense 3, σε ποιον τα πουλάς αυτά;, is the showing-off question. σε ποιον is not a buyer of goods. μας πούλησε is accusative μας, the people who were stood up. It is not μου.
The price is not one marker. σε plus accusative of τιμή is printed: the citation σε τιμή κόστους, and Πουλάει ρούχα σε τιμή ευκαιρίας. τιμή is accusative. κόστους and ευκαιρίας are genitive modifiers of that noun. με plus accusative, in the same citation, is the terms: με πίστωση / με έκπτωση / με δόσεις / με γραμμάτια. A sum inside με is unprinted. φτηνά and ακριβά are adverbs. τοις μετρητοίς is the learned dative, the cash, not an accusative and not a sum. για plus accusative of the consideration is the Esau line: για ένα πιάτο φακή. A different για is purpose: Αναγκάστηκε να πουλήσει τα κοσμήματά της για να μπορέσει να ζήσει. Holton’s για is the benefactive, on μαγειρεύω: για το Νίκο. It is not a price, and the verb is not πουλάω. πόσο πουλιέται αυτό το σπίτι; asks the amount and prints no noun of the sum. A bare accusative of a money amount is unprinted. Το βιβλίο πούλησε χίλια αντίτυπα puts the book in the nominative and the copies in the accusative. The dictionary’s gloss is αγοράστηκε, διατέθηκε σε χίλια αντίτυπα. The copies are not the price.
πουλιέμαι is the passive on the headword. πόσο πουλιέται αυτό το σπίτι; Πουλιούνται οικόπεδα. Οι δίσκοι / τα βιβλία τσέπης πουλιούνται (πολύ). The subject is the goods. Η δημόσια επιχείρηση πουλήθηκε σε ιδιώτες keeps the buyers in σε. No passive line makes the buyer the nominative. The learned verb is a separate headword. πωλώ [poló] -ούμαι, class Ρ10.9: (λόγ., ιδ. σε μικρές αγγελίες) πουλώ. Πωλείται οικόπεδο / διαμέρισμα. Πωλούνται μεταχειρισμένα αυτοκίνητα. The subject is again the goods. Greek Wiktionary: πωλώ is used instead of the more popular πουλάω–πουλώ in official documents, for example contracts, and in advertisements. The ad line prints no buyer and no price.
Where this frame diverges from English sell X to Y for Z. The English page prints Pat sold a lawnmower to Chris, Pat sold Chris a lawnmower for twenty dollars, and Wasn’t Chris sold a lawnmower for twenty dollars. The goods are an object. The buyer is to plus a noun, or a bare first object. The price is for plus the sum. The passive can make the buyer the subject. πουλάω puts the goods in the accusative, as English puts them in an object, and the lines print one object. A bare buyer is unprinted. English sold Chris a lawnmower has no pair in these entries. The clitic buyer is genitive μου, not an accusative and not English to. A full noun as the buyer is σε plus accusative, σε ιδιώτες and σε αντίπαλη χώρα. A full noun in the genitive as that buyer is unprinted. Holton’s full-noun genitive is on δίνω, and that grammar calls it uncommon because it is also the possessive. The price is not one for. σε τιμή ευκαιρίας and σε τιμή κόστους are σε plus accusative of τιμή. για ένα πιάτο φακή is για plus accusative of the consideration. με πίστωση and με δόσεις are με plus accusative of the terms, not of a sum. A bare accusative of a money amount is unprinted. χίλια αντίτυπα is the number of copies, and the book is the subject. πουλιέται and πωλείται make the goods the subject. They do not make the buyer that subject.
