Voice[Lessor] + ApplHAVE(LesseeDAT ∨ an+ACC, ThemepropertyACC) + für-MeasurePPrice ⟨Amount, Denomination⟩ · Period unranked

A commercial rental, on this reading, has a Lessor, a Lessee, the Property, and a Price. A period of time may be named in the same clause. They are not four or five equal sisters of vermieten. Voice adds the Lessor. Low ApplHAVE introduces the Lessee and relates the Lessee to the property. The root’s object is that Theme, accusative. Where a source prints a sum, für holds one MeasureP whose inner arguments are Amount and Denomination. The Price is not a second accusative. Whether a Period is an argument or only an adjunct is open: no source checked here ranks it.

What is different from the English gloss. English rent is direction-neutral. The subject can be either party: rent the flat to Chris (the subject lets it) and rent the flat from Chris (the subject takes it). German splits that direction onto two lemmas. vermieten has the lessor as subject. mieten has the lessee as subject. Langenscheidt prints the split in one bracket, eine Wohnung mieten [vermieten]. Duden’s two definitions match it: vermieten is letting the use out, mieten is taking the use in. The lessor’s marking on mieten is the expected von+dative. Duden, the WDG text, and the Langenscheidt lines read here do not print that von. It stays open. This page does not open a mieten entry.

Places · who wears which marking

Duden, the WDG line that DWDS hosts, and Langenscheidt print the lessee and the property. They do not print lessor, lessee, property, and a für-sum in one clause. Langenscheidt’s price line is a werden-clause: the property is the subject, and für 800 Euro is the sum, with im Monat in the same clause and no lessee. The definitions name the payment as gegen Entgelt or gegen ein Entgelt, which is prose, not a für-phrase.

Each row lines up one English slot with its German slot. The alignment type says what happens to the slot: = (same status), shift (structural ↔ oblique), or a lexical split of the subject’s direction. Printed dictionary lines come first. Every other German sentence is constructed, modelled on a printed line. They show the working alignment, not frequency, and not a bilingual corpus.

Examples

Argument difference. English rent does not choose which party is the subject. Pat rented the flat to Chris and Chris rented the flat from Pat are the same verb with the direction in to or from. German does not keep that choice inside one lemma. vermieten fixes the lessor as subject and the lessee as a dative or an an-phrase. mieten fixes the lessee as subject. The property is the accusative on both lemmas in the lines printed here. werden on vermieten promotes that property. A passive that makes the lessee the subject and leaves the property accusative is not a frame in the dictionaries checked, and the verkaufen page keeps the matching promotion bad. Neighbouring lemmas, one line only: Duden and Langenscheidt list verpachten among the synonyms of vermieten; Duden lists pachten and leihen among the synonyms of mieten. verleihen is unprinted in the entries checked. None of those lemmas is given a frame, and none is given a page.

werden, one prefield

V2 and the passive are operations on the same places. They do not add a participant.

One prefield. The finite verb is in C: vermietet, hat, wird. Exactly one phrase sits in front of it. A paradigm of those orders is not printed in the entries checked here. Order is not starred.

ver- does not split. Present 3sg is vermietet. Perfekt is hat … vermietet. ver- stays on the stem. There is no right-edge particle ver. This is the same inseparability as ver- on verkaufen, not the separable ab of abbuchen.

werden promotes the property. Langenscheidt: die Wohnung wird für 800 Euro im Monat vermietet. DWDS: Vermietet wurde die Villa gerade mal für 350.000 Euro pro Jahr and Die möblierten Zimmer würden … vermietet. The subject in each of these is the property, not the lessee. A werden-passive that keeps a dative lessee beside a nominative property-subject is unprinted in the lines checked. It is not given a judgment on this page. What the verkaufen analysis keeps bad, and what stays the working limit here, is the other promotion: the lessee as subject, the property still accusative, *Wurde Chris einen Wagen vermietet? The sources checked for vermieten do not print that string. The star is the sell-de parallel, not a new dictionary fact.

bekommen is unprinted. No bekommen sentence with vermieten is in the entries checked. None is constructed. On verkaufen the same passive is unprinted and unconstructed.

wofür. It is not in the dictionary entries checked. The constructed question resumes the whole für-MeasureP, as on verkaufen. It does not resume Euro minus 800, and it does not resume the apartment. V2 and this pronoun are not a further argument.

Derivations · working sketches, revisable

Each sketch is a working drawing, not a locked analysis. The point of the drawing is one accusative (the property), a lessee that is dative or an, and a price inside für where a sum is printed. The English subject is not fixed to the lessor. Open one sketch at a time. Which theta role is the object in this low ApplHAVE domain is the revisable note Causative templates and argument selection. This page does not edit that note.

✓ Pat hat einem Kollegen die Wohnung für 800 Euro vermietet. constructed

On vermieten the external argument is the lessor, the one who lets the use out. On converse mieten the external argument is the lessee. English rent allows either external argument and puts the direction in to or from. ver- is lemma morphology inside the verb, not a phrase in the prefield.

800 Euro = one MeasureP. n and U compose inside that phrase. Orthography is not extra arity. There is no further argument “currency name.” Composition in this cloth is für(MeasureP), not V(n)(U). im Monat and pro Jahr are printed next to such a phrase. Commercial temporary transfer in German: the lessor lets property to a lessee. Lessor (Voice, subject of vermieten), Lessee (dative, or an + accusative), Property (accusative Theme), and Price (für + one MeasureP where a sum is printed). A period is printed and is not ranked as an argument or as an adjunct. English rent is direction-neutral. German splits the direction: vermieten versus mieten. von+dative on mieten is unprinted in the entries checked. werden promotes the property.

Sense × language: rent · German (vermieten). One sense on this page, so no subscript. Not given a page here: mieten, verpachten, pachten, leihen, verleihen. No English rent hub. Geometry neighbors: sell · verkaufen · payGIVE · bezahlen. Index 2 German Transfer cites tauschen; geben — not vermieten.

Working paper. German-only micro-entry. Dictionary frames were checked on Duden online (vermieten and mieten), on DWDS (the WDG text and the usage lines), and on Langenscheidt German–English. Barron’s 501 German Verbs was not accessible. Those sources that were read print an accusative of the property, a dative or an+accusative lessee, für plus a sum in two price lines, and werden subjects that are the property. They do not print von+dative on mieten, and they do not rank a period as an argument or as an adjunct.
Constructed examples. Dictionary lines and the DWDS usage sentences are marked as printed. Every other full clause is marked constructed. The lessee-subject passive is starred only as the parallel verkaufen keeps bad. A dative left beside a nominative property-subject under werden is unprinted and is not starred.
Arity. Index 2 does not list vermieten. Surface count can name a lessor, a lessee, a property, and a price. The lexicon does not list four co-arguments of one flat V. Voice adds the Lessor. Low ApplHAVE adds the Lessee. The root takes the property. für takes one MeasureP when a sum is printed. A period is not filed as a fifth sister. Denomination is not a further sister.
What this page does not do. mieten stays the converse lemma. verpachten, pachten, and leihen stay the synonym line. No English page of rent is opened. No other language of rent is opened.

Hierarchy

Not a flat grid of four sisters. A flat grid would give the verb two accusatives, or a price that is a second object, or one lemma whose subject is either party. vermieten shows one accusative, the property, a lessee in the dative or in an, and a price in für where a sum is printed. The other direction is a different lemma.

800 Euro = one MeasureP. See the MeasureP sketch. Langenscheidt’s für 800 Euro and the DWDS villa line’s für 350.000 Euro are that one phrase. im Monat and pro Jahr sit beside it. They are not a second price.

What German changes, against the English gloss, is the subject’s direction. What the printed cloth shares with verkaufen is one accusative Theme, a dative or an-phrase for the other person, and für on a sum. The Theme here is the property let for a time. The Theme there is the goods.

Geometry · vermieten beside the live German roots

In the constructed Pat hat einem Kollegen die Wohnung für 800 Euro vermietet, the colleague comes to HAVE the use of the apartment. The price measures that letting. It is not the object that is transferred.

  • English rent. One verb. The subject is the lessor with to, or the lessee with from. No English page is opened.
  • mieten. The converse lemma. The subject takes the property into use. von+dative for the lessor is unprinted. Not a page.
  • verkaufen. The buyer is a dative or an, the goods are the accusative, and für is the Price. werden promotes the goods. The buyer-as-subject passive with the goods still accusative stays bad on that page. This page uses that limit for the lessee and does not reprint the sale.
  • bezahlen. The accusative is the money. für is Consideration. On vermieten the accusative is the property and für is the price where a sum is printed.
  • Neighbouring lemmas. verpachten is a Duden and Langenscheidt synonym of vermieten. pachten and leihen are Duden synonyms of mieten. verleihen is unprinted in the entries checked. No frame is given to any of them.
  • Omission. Duden prints sie wollen nicht vermieten with no accusative. Langenscheidt prints sie vermietet an Urlauber with a lessee and no property in the clause. Omission does not demote a phrase that is present, and it does not turn the price into a second accusative.
