beladen · AgentNOM + LocationACC + Theme (mit + dative) · inseparable be- · hat beladen

a dative, where printed, is the person who receives a burden · jemandem etwas aufladen · not the cargo Theme

English load prints both frames on one verb. Oxford prints load something/somebody onto something (Sacks were being loaded onto the truck) and load something with something (six wagons loaded with coal), and load something up with something (Men were loading up a truck with timber). Cambridge prints load something onto something (How long will it take to load this sand onto the lorry?) and, in the Academic Content Dictionary, He could load more hay into the wagon. The business entry prints load sth with sth: The tanker was loaded with four million gallons of diesel oil.

What is different from that English gloss. German does not print both of those frames on laden. laden prints the freight as an accusative and the vehicle or animal in auf or in plus accusative: Duden Kisten auf einen Lkw laden, DWDS Steine in die Schubkarre laden, PONS etw auf etw acc / in etw acc laden. beladen prints the vehicle as an accusative and the freight in mit plus dative: DWDS einen Wagen, ein Schiff, einen Lastwagen mit Kohle, Steinen, Schutt, Sand beladen, PONS etw mit Gütern beladen. DWDS writes the split as be- plus laden. The prefix does not separate, and the perfect is hat beladen, not a form with ge-.

The bilingual glosses then cross the split. PONS glosses the one German line etw mit Gütern beladen both as to load sth with goods and as to load goods on[to] sth. Langenscheidt’s editorial freight line is still etwas auf [in] (Akkusativ) etwas laden, and that same line is glossed both to load sth onto [into] sth and to load sth with sth. The German of that line has no mit. mit of the cargo is beladen.

Places · who wears which marking

Read the accusative of laden as the freight, and auf or in plus accusative as the place the freight goes. Read the accusative of beladen as that place, and mit plus dative as the freight. A dative person beside aufladen is the one who is given the burden. The invite verb is a different head with the same spelling.

A bare dative is the person who receives a burden, on the lines that print one. Do not read mit Patronen on a rifle, or mit Spannung geladen of an atmosphere, as this cargo mit.

Strong verb · principal parts

Barron’s 501 German Verbs was not opened. Nothing is quoted from it. The parts below are the ones Duden, DWDS, PONS, Langenscheidt, and the English Wiktionary print. English Wiktionary files German laden as a class 6 strong verb, auxiliary haben, third person lädt, past lud, participle geladen, past subjunctive lüde.

PONS prints the present of laden as ich lade, du lädst, er lädt, wir laden, ihr ladet, sie laden, the past as ich lud, du ludest / ludst, er lud, wir luden, and the perfect as ich habe geladen. Duden’s spelling line is du lädst, er/sie lädt; du lud[e]st; du lüdest; geladen; lad[e]!. English Wiktionary prints the same present, past ludest or ludst, subjunctive lüde, and imperative lad or lade. PONS prints beladen as ich belade, du belädst, er belädt, ich belud, ich habe beladen. The invite verb uses the same strong parts. It is not a second conjugation of the load verb.

Other senses · kept off the cargo frame

Weapon. Duden sense 3a is ammunition in a firearm: ein Gewehr, ein Geschütz laden. DWDS: das Gewehr mit Patronen laden. PONS: etw [mit etw dat] laden, glossed to load sth [with sth]. That mit is the ammunition. It is not the Theme of beladen.

Film, data, battery, engine. Duden files a film in a camera, data and a program, and eine Batterie, einen Akku laden. The figurative atmosphere is mit Spannung geladen. DWDS physics is einen Akku laden. Langenscheidt adds photography, computing, and supercharge of a motor. aufladen sense 2 is electrical, and sense 3 is a diesel engine. Those lines are not the truck frame.

verladen as a trick. DWDS sense 2 is to fool someone, and the football sense is to beat a goalkeeper or a defender. The passive of the cargo sense is the freight. The trick sense is a person. This page does not build it.

entladen besides the vehicle. DWDS also prints a weapon, a battery, a reflexive discharge (ein Gewitter entlädt sich), and an archaic genitive sich seiner Sorgen entladen. That genitive is not the cargo Theme. The cargo lines are Kohlen, Kartoffeln, Steine entladen and einen Lastkraftwagen entladen.

abladen besides the freight. DWDS prints hay with a source, Heu (vom Lastwagen) abladen, and the vehicle as object, den Lastwagen abladen. A figurative line puts a duty on other people: eine Aufgabe, Last, Pflicht, Schuld (auf andere, auf fremde Schultern) abladen. A werden-passive of that freight is unprinted in the examples returned.

Examples

Argument difference. English load hay onto the truck and load the truck with hay are one verb. German prints the first frame on laden and the second on beladen. PONS and Langenscheidt still gloss a single German frame with both English frames. The finite hay sentences below are constructed. The dictionary cousins are the lines with the tags.

Derivations · working sketches, revisable

Each sketch is a working drawing, not a locked analysis. The drawing gives the Agent to the nominative subject. On laden it gives the Theme to the accusative and the Goal to auf or in plus accusative. On beladen it gives the Location to the accusative and the Theme to mit plus dative, under the prefix be- that DWDS writes as a word-split. Open one sketch at a time. Notes

Working paper · October 2026 · German micro-entry · beyond Index 2

laden takes the freight as an accusative and the goal in auf or in plus accusative. beladen takes the place as an accusative and the freight in mit plus dative. English load prints both frames on one verb. A dative person is the one who receives a burden. werden, where printed, promotes the Theme. The invite spelling is a different verb.
