A lending, on this reading, has a Lender, a Recipient, and a Theme. Infopédia’s first sense of emprestar is confiar (uma coisa) a outrem, com a condição de ser restituída. Priberam sense 1 is Confiar temporariamente algo, sob condição de ser devolvido, with já li o livro que você me emprestou. Michaelis sense 1 is Confiar ou dar alguma coisa a outrem por certo tempo, com a obrigatoriedade implícita de restituição. Voice adds the Lender as the subject. Low ApplHAVE introduces the Recipient inside that one verb domain and relates the Recipient to the Theme. The root’s object is the Theme, a direct object. The Recipient is an indirect object: a plus a noun phrase, or a dative clitic. The printed clitics on this sense are Priberam’s me and Aulete’s lhe. Plural lhes is the plural of that clitic and is unprinted on the lines read. Aulete’s ditransitive label is tdi. + a, para. The filled Recipient phrases in the examples read are lhe, ao meu pai, and aos países pobres. para is in the label and is not filled in those examples. Infopédia, Priberam, and Michaelis, in the lines read, print a or a clitic and do not print para. A stretch of time stays inside the definitions (temporariamente, por certo tempo). Where the Theme is money, a rate is printed as a juro, a juros, or com juros. They are not five equal sisters of emprestar. The time expression and the rate are not ranked as arguments or as adjuncts. The return wording is the definitions’. It is not an aspect claim. The drawing is the same working claim as the Recipient of English give-geometry pay: a low applicative of possession, inside one verb, revisable. Which theta role is the object in this low ApplHAVE domain is the note Causative templates and argument selection. This page does not edit that note.

Where the frame sits against English lend her the book. English lend does not mean borrow. The best single-word gloss of the working sense is lend, and the frame still diverges. English lend her the book is a double object: a bare Recipient beside the Theme. English lend the book to her is the other cloth. Portuguese prints no bare Recipient beside the Theme. The Recipient is a plus a noun phrase, or a dative clitic, and Aulete’s label also prints para. The ordinary borrow direction is not a second frame of emprestar. It is pedir emprestado or tomar emprestado, a light verb plus the participle of this root, and the participle agrees with the Theme. The direction is the light verb. On pedir the person asked wears the same a that is the Recipient here. Spanish prestar is the same kind of split, and the Spanish Recipient is a dative doubled by le. French prêter has a converse lemma, emprunter, and à flips role. German leihen prints both directions on one lemma. Italian prestare has no single-verb converse, and the source of prendere in prestito is da.

The labeled borrow reading of the same verb. Infopédia prints three senses and no borrow sense. Priberam sense 3 is labeled [Brasil] and glossed Tomar por empréstimo, with emprestou da vizinha. The de there is the Source, and the subject is the one who takes. Aulete sense 4 prints Tomar por empréstimo with tdr. + de and Emprestou mil reais do amigo. The older paragraph on the same page prints (Bras.) (pop.) and com prep. de, with Emprestou mil cruzeiros do amigo. Michaelis sense 3 glosses the verb as Receber ou tomar por empréstimo; pedir emprestado and prints Emprestava livros dos colegas. That article, as read, does not add a regional label to the sense. Ciberdúvidas, on Emprestei in the sense of having taken money on loan, says the use is described as a brasileirismo in the Dicionário Houaiss. Houaiss was not opened directly. A further Ciberdúvidas answer discusses João emprestou do Pedro o dinheiro in the sense of João tomou emprestado o dinheiro de Pedro: the construction is used in certain regions of Brazil, it is unused in Portugal, Brazilian dictionaries record it as a regionalism restricted to certain regions, and the answer treats it as outside the cultured norm. The labels are not one label. The reading stays off the working formula.

No printed line stacks a named Lender, a Theme, a Recipient, a time expression, and a rate in one clause. Infopédia prints uma coisa and a outrem in the definition. Priberam prints me with o livro inside a relative. Michaelis prints aos amigos with um centavo, and, on another line, a bank, money, aos correntistas, and com juros baixíssimos. Aulete prints lhe with a dress, and ao meu pai with a sum. The return wording stays inside the definitions.

Each row lines up one English slot with a Portuguese slot. The alignment type says what happens to the slot: = (same object status), shift (a bare English object ↔ a Portuguese indirect object), or a split of the subject’s direction. Printed lines come first. Every other Portuguese sentence is constructed, modelled on a printed line. They show the working alignment, not frequency, and not a bilingual corpus.

emprestar is the lender-side verb · lhe is a place the clause already has

The clitic does not add a participant. It spells the Recipient the lend reading has already assigned.

a, or me / lhe. The indirect object is an a-phrase, or the dative clitic of that phrase. Priberam prints me. Aulete prints lhe. Plural lhes is unprinted. The clitic and a full noun phrase are not printed together on the lines read. Aulete’s label also names para. The examples read do not fill that preposition.

The same clitic is the person asked on pedir emprestado. Ciberdúvidas prints pediu-lhe. The letter does not choose the role. The verb does. English from chooses the source by a different preposition. The working Portuguese borrow expression changes the verb and keeps the marker.

No bare second object. A name in the Recipient slot is a Maria, or the clitic. Pat emprestou Maria o livro is not a printed line.

The borrow reading with de is a different direction on the same spelling. The subject takes. The other person is de, not a. The sources that label it do not use one label. The working expressions stay the light-verb complexes on the borrow page.

The figurative a-phrase is another sense. A colour lent to the horizon, a meaning lent to existence, seriousness lent to a negotiation: no returnable Theme, and no Recipient of such a Theme.

Derivations · working sketches, revisable

Each sketch is a working drawing, not a locked analysis. The drawing gives the Lender to Voice and the Theme to the root. The Recipient is a or a dative clitic, inside one verb. The ordinary borrow drawing is another verb plus the participle, on the borrow page. Open one sketch at a time. The low ApplHAVE claim stays revisable.

Temporary transfer in Portuguese: one lender-side verb. Lender (subject of emprestar), Recipient (indirect object: a + NP, or dative me / lhe; Aulete’s label also para), Theme (direct object). No bare double object. por certo tempo and a rate phrase are optional and unranked. The ordinary borrow side is pedir emprestado or tomar emprestado, the same root, and the light verb carries the direction. A borrow reading of emprestar with de is labeled [Brasil] in Priberam and (Bras.) (pop.) in Aulete’s older line. A bank loan is also conceder um empréstimo.

Not a flat grid of five sisters. A flat grid would give the verb two bare objects, or a rate that is a second object, or one a that means the same role on emprestar and on pedir. emprestar shows one direct object, the Theme, and a Recipient as an indirect object, a or a dative clitic.

dinheiro = one object. See the money sketch. com juros is the rate phrase beside that object. It is not a second object. um empréstimo is the object of conceder in Aulete’s noun line.

What Portuguese shows, against English lend her the book, is that the Recipient is not a bare object. English uses a double object or to, and uses borrow for the other direction. Portuguese uses a or a dative clitic, and Aulete’s label also names para. The ordinary other direction is a light verb on the same root. A labeled reading also uses emprestar with de.

  • leihen. Both directions on one lemma. The borrow frame is a reflexive dative plus von or bei. Portuguese does not copy that split onto the working reading of emprestar.
  • enviar and comprar. Other Portuguese pages. enviar prints a, para, and lhe for a Recipient or a Goal. Aulete prints para beside a on emprestar and does not label para as a variety. This page does not import the send page’s variety split. comprar is not this loan.
